Is This the Best of Times, or the Worst of Times or a Sign of the Times?

Heather Kobler

Over the last few months, we have been assaulted by many horrible things happening though out the world. Just when you think things have calmed down, something horrific happens. We are not designed to deal with that much stress and I for one, feel like we’re at war on many fronts. And we seem to be telegraphing strategic information to our enemies all the time. Does anyone remember this phrase? “Lose lips sink ships.” I mean, what are we thinking about?

And now, we are in the midst of an election like no other I can remember in my lifetime.  Neither the democrats nor republicans can seem to stop attacking each other long enough to come up with ideas to move our country forward. What ever happened to us Americans? Factions that could co-operate with each other and come up with ideas and plans for a better future for this country? They remind me of a bunch of fifth graders playing marbles on a playground. And, those marbles are our lives.

I realize that freedom is not free. Many of our Serviceman as well as Policemen have given their lives for us to continue living our lives. And once they are gone, their families will never be the same. The loss of a parent is one of the most tragic things that can happen to a family.

Sometimes I think that THINGS (electronic and material), have become far more important than spending time with your family. Where has dinner time gone? I know almost no family today that sits down together for breakfast, lunch or dinner any day of the week! Our families have become fractured and the members seem to be in free-fall without direction.

Recently, I watched a mother spend her entire lunch in a very nice restaurant, reading emails the entire time, while her husband and three children ate. From my point of view, it looked completely normal and unfortunately, I think it’s SOP for a lot of families. I can tell you for sure, your children will grow up so fast that you won’t believe it! To give up those precious moments of listening to your children’s thoughts, or to miss time interacting with them, is a bad trade off and ultimately creates much regret.

Is anyone out there that wants to talk or listen to each other anymore? I guess in the end, it’s up to all of us to make our lives the best of times. And… this is not a rehearsal. This is it!
