<p class="has-drop-cap">You don’t have to be a golfer to fall in love with one of Southern California’s classiest and most iconic resorts. The only thing you need is an appreciation for sweeping ocean views and sunsets that seem to melt into the horizon. Such is life at <a href="https://www.lodgetorreypines.com/">The Lodge at Torrey Pines</a>, where the family and I recently spent three wonderful days and two blissful nights.</p>

<p>Overlooking the world‑renowned <a href="http://www.torreypinesgolfcourse.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Torrey Pines Golf Course</a> and the shimmering Pacific Ocean, this AAA Five Diamond resort blends world‑class dining, a full‑service spa, and warm, attentive service into a luxurious and exciting getaway. It is the kind of place that instantly slows your pulse and puts you in vacation mode. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4163" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-1.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-1-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Lodge at Torrey Pines boasts sweeping ocean views and memorable sunsets</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Our family’s stay at the resort began in the lobby, where grand wooden beams, handcrafted furniture, and a massive stone fireplace welcomed us with cozy charm. We then checked into a gorgeous suite, overlooking the ocean.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Spacious and serene, the room featured two large queen beds dressed in Egyptian cotton linens and quilted duvets, a giant TV, mini-fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. The granite and marble bathroom—with its oversized bathtub and warm Craftsman accents—felt like a private spa. But the real showstopper was the balcony. Huge, furnished, and overlooking the Pacific, it became our favorite place for morning coffee and sunset wine. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignright size-full"><img decoding="async" width="449" height="310" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4164" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-2.jpg 449w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-2-300x207.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-2-320x220.jpg 320w" sizes="(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Suites at the resort are luxurious and come with teepees for kids</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Since we were traveling with our two young kids, the staff surprised us with a small teepee set up right in the middle of the room. This instantly became their hideaway—perfect for watching TV, snacking, or just giggling together. It was a thoughtful touch that made the stay more special.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Outside the room, we explored the lush and beautiful grounds, with winding paths, native plants, and glimpses of the ocean peeking through the trees. Tucked in the middle of the property is the pool area, where we spent much of our time. Here, the kids made instant friends and spent hours splashing around while we enjoyed a leisurely lunch under the warm sun. It quickly became our daytime home base.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4165" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-3.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-3-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The resort grounds are lined with lush paths and green grass</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">Besides luxurious accommodations, the lodge is also known for exceptional dining. The Grill at Torrey Pines, with panoramic views of the golf course and a custom wood‑burning rotisserie, became a go‑to spot. For breakfast we savored bacon and eggs, along with a big, delicious breakfast burrito, with eggs, sausage, potatoes and beans. The kids devoured fluffy buttermilk pancakes, a Belgian waffle with honey pecan butter, and more maple syrup than I care to admit.</p>

<p>After breakfast my son and I played a round of golf at the resort and then the whole family drove a couple miles to <a href="https://www.sandiego.gov/lifeguards/beaches/shores" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">La Jolla Shores Beach</a>. This beautiful, sandy beach is approximately 1 mile long, features a playground on the sand, and it is adjacent to the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve. Many novice scuba classes are held at La Jolla Shores. The previous time we were at the beach, we saw scores of harmless leopard sharks swimming through the waves. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4166" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-4.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-4-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-4-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>La Jolla Shores Beach features a park, lots of sand and gentle waves for the whole family</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>After playing at the beach, we headed back to The Lodge at Torrey Pines for a lunch of burgers and fried calamari at The Grill. We then relaxed by the pool until dinner.</p>

<p>For supper we shared seared albacore tuna with asparagus and Meyer lemon relish, followed by a rich red wine braised lamb shank served with carrot risotto and fresh spring vegetables. The kids stuck to the classics—chicken tenders and a big, juicy hamburger. For dessert, we all split homemade ice cream and warm cookies.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="768" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4167" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-300x288.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Food-768x738.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Grill at Torrey Pines offers great breakfast and dinner items, with awesome views</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>After dinner, we wandered along the resort’s lush pathways, watching the sky fade from gold to deep purple and listening to the waves crashing on the rocks below.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The next morning I worked out in the state-of-the-art fitness center and relaxed in the sauna at the resort’s world‑class Spa at Torrey Pines. From here, I joined the kids for a game of croquet on the lawn. This big green space also doubles as an unforgettable spot for weddings, as it overlooks the oceans and the bluffs of La Jolla.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4168" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-7.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-7-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-7-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Croquet on the lawn is great family fun</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">We then explored more of the property. What makes The Lodge especially captivating is its sense of history and craftsmanship. Modeled after the iconic Gamble and Blacker houses in Pasadena, the resort is a tribute to early 1900s Craftsman architecture. Everywhere you look, there are thoughtful details: handcrafted woodwork, stained glass, stonework, and warm earth tones that echo the natural beauty outside.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-8.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4169" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-8.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-8-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-8-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The lobby and resort is a tribute to early 1900s Craftsman architecture</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Even the trees surrounding the property have a story. Torrey pines are among the rarest pine species in the world, growing only in La Jolla and on Santa Rosa Island. They survive in desert conditions by drawing moisture from coastal fog, and their five‑needle fascicles help them pull water from the air. Walking among them feels like stepping into a living museum of California’s natural history.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-9.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-4170" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-9.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-9-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/pic-9-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Torrey Pines Golf Course attracts players from around the world</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>And then, of course, there’s the golf. Torrey Pines Golf Course is legendary—a 36‑hole municipal course originally designed by William F. Bell and later updated by Rees Jones for the 2008 U.S. Open. The South Course stretches 7,698 yards, while the North Course spans 7,258 yards, both offering jaw‑dropping ocean views. Even if you’re not a golfer, watching players tee off against the backdrop of the Pacific is mesmerizing.</p>

<p>The holidays are here and it’s time to share special moments with family and friends. And if you’re like me, it’s also time to visit Universal Studios Hollywood, where the seasons come to life with movie-making magic and exciting, interactive rides, attractions, light shows and more.&nbsp;</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-right">Story and some photos by Greg Aragon.</h5>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="523" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3445" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-1.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-1-300x196.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-1-768x503.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Universal Studios Hollywood comes to life for the holidays</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>My son and I visited the park last holiday season and it was so amazing, we are planning on returning this season to replay the adventure.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="641" height="519" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Pic-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3446" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Pic-2.jpg 641w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Pic-2-300x243.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The park is a memorable adventure for the whole family</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">For the holidays, Universal Studios has brought back some of its most popular seasonal attractions, such as “Grinchmas” and “Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” as well as exciting seasonal enhancements to the Mushroom Kingdom at SUPER NINTENDO WORLD.</p>

<p>One of my favorite attractions at the park is <em>The Wizarding World of Harry Potter</em>, and during the holidays, this adventure land is turned into something that must be experienced to truly appreciate. In fact, “Christmas in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” is the most amazing and realistic, virtual reality-type light display I&#8217;ve seen.</p>

<p>To celebrate the holidays, the theme park has transformed &#8220;The Wizarding World of Harry Potter&#8221; attraction, including the &#8220;Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey&#8221; thrill ride, Hogwarts Castle and the surrounding Hogsmeade village, into a Christmas wonderland, with snow, characters, decorations and a mesmerizing array of projection lights and images.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="936" height="702" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3447" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-3.jpg 936w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-3-768x576.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-3-850x638.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">&#8220;<em>The Wizarding World of Harry Potter&#8221; is turned into a winter wonderland</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>The adventure begins each night in Hogsmeade Village, where Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry projects realistic, ghost-like images around the outside Hogswarts Castle for all to see. The animations fly and dance across the castle along with a musical arrangement from the Harry Potter movies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Before experiencing this spectacle, my son and I rode &#8220;Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey,” a mesmerising and thrilling virtual reality coaster, designed in hyper-realistic 3D-HD. The multidimensional ride features robotics, fused with elaborate filmed action sequences and immersive visceral effects.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignleft size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="298" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Pic-4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3448" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Pic-4.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Pic-4-300x248.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Universal Plaza is transformed into “Grinchmas,” with The Grinch and his friends</em>. Photo courtesy of Universal Studios.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">While in Hogsmeade Village, guests can sample hot Butterbeer from carts and eat delicious and fun British fare such as Bangers &amp; Mash, Shepherd’s Pie, Fish &amp; Chips and more at one of the village restaurants. Also within &#8220;The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,&#8221; is the fun, family coaster, &#8220;Flight of the Hippogriff.&#8221;</p>

<p>Universal Plaza in the heart of Universal Studios also comes to life, as it is transformed into “Grinchmas,” with fun holiday music and a towering 60 ft-tall “Grinchmas” tree covered in lights. Here, guests are swept into the whimsical world of <em>Who-</em>ville with The Grinch, his faithful dog Max and a bunch of Who-ville Whos &#8211; all ready to take photos with the kids and play in fresh made “snow.” Grinchmas returns December 1, 2, 8, 9 and 14 – 30.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides the exciting holiday attractions, Universal Studios still has all the rides that make it one of the best theme parks around, such as the Studio Tour, The Simpsons, Jurassic Park &#8211; The Ride, The Mummy, Transformers, and more.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignleft size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="450" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-5.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3449" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-5.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-5-240x300.jpg 240w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>“Jurassic Park &#8211; The Ride” and “Raptors Encounter” allow guests to get up-close and personal with giant dinosaurs</em>. Photo courtesy of Universal Studios.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>One of my all-time favorites at the park is the world-renowned Studio Tour, which takes guests behind-the-scenes of the world’s biggest and busiest movie and television studio where they can also discover immersive thrill rides such as “Fast &amp; Furious—Supercharged;&#8221; and the intense &#8220;King Kong 360 3-D.&#8221; The tour also drives past the infamous &#8220;Bates Motel&#8221; from the movie &#8220;Psycho,&#8221; the harbor where &#8220;Jaws&#8221; lurks, and numerous other famous movie sets.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>And then there is &#8220;Jurassic Park —The Ride,&#8221; where visitors hop on a boat and cruise through Jurassic World. While floating down a serene river, through Predator Cover, guests encounter a huge Mosasaurus eating lunch and a cute baby Stegosaurus. The ride is relaxing, until alarms start going off and everything goes haywire: the two scariest dinos around, Indominus rex and T-rex, are on the loose, looking for food and no human is safe.</p>

<p>Next to &#8220;Jurassic Park —The Ride” is “Raptors Encounter,” where guests can come face-to-face with 15 ft-tall carnivorous, predatory dinosaurs. The beasts are walking around, kept in line by expert handlers.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="936" height="624" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-6.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3450" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-6.jpg 936w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-6-300x200.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-6-768x512.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-6-850x567.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Studio Tour offers a behind-the-scenes looks at movie making</em>. <p>Another memorable attraction is Transformers: The Ride-3D, an immersive thriller, blurring the line between fiction and reality. Fusing HD 3D media and flight simulation technology, this epic excursion took us into a futuristic world where alien robots from the planet Cybertron fight it out on earth.</p>

<p>Based on the popular movies, this mind-blowing ride had us screaming and dodging car parts, robot pieces and other objects as they flew at our 3D glasses, while we fought alongside Optimus and tried to protect the AllSpark from Decepticons over four stories tall. Out in front of the ride, we encountered a couple of the huge transformers interacting with guests and taking pictures with youngsters and their families.</p>

<p>From battling transformers, we went thousands of years back in time to experience Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride. This heart-pounding roller coaster begins by slowly creeping past an ancient Egyptian tomb full of gold artifacts and hieroglyphics before catapulting riders 45mph in virtual darkness. And when the train stops and guests try to regain their composure, the Mummy returns and the coaster zips in reverse for a thrilling climax.</p>

<p>As 2025 ends, Universal Studios Hollywood is looking forward to 2026 and the long awaited debut of “Fast &amp; Furious: Hollywood Drift” roller coaster. This mesmerizing new coaster will feature 360-degree rotation of the individual ride vehicles as guests travel along 4,100 feet of elaborate track.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="936" height="527" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3451" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-7.jpg 936w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-7-300x169.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-7-768x432.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/pic-7-850x479.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The new “Fast &amp; Furious: Hollywood Drift” roller coaster will put riders in a thrilling drifting car, spinning 360-degrees</em>. </div>

<p>The innovative ride features groundbreaking technology designed to create a seamless sensation of drifting cars as guests spin in motion at fast speeds while speeding along an aerial track that winds its way over sections of the theme park, including the multi-level escalator that connects the Upper and Lower Lots.</p>

<p>To begin the ride, guests will queue up within an expansive garage-like structure before settling into one of four ride vehicles, designed to look like the iconic cars from the films, including Dominic Toretto’s 1970 Dodge Charger. <h5 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-right">Article and photographs by Greg Aragon</h5>

<p class="has-drop-cap">I love it when a new hotel enters the Southern California hospitality scene &#8212; especially when it comes to an emerging destination city like Rancho Cucamonga. Such is the case with Sanctity Hotel and Durango Cocina &amp; Rooftop Bar (<a href="https://www.sanctityhotel.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">https://www.sanctityhotel.com/</a>), which opened this past April. </p>

<p>As part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, the 68-room boutique hotel brings new luxury to Rancho Cucamonga with amenities, including a state-of-the-art gym, sauna, and the ultra-modern Thriv Studio, which offers advanced wellness therapies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Bringing Sanctity Hotel and Durango Cocina to life has been a dream come true. Every detail tells a story, inviting guests to experience something truly unique to the area,” says Sachin Bhakta, Vice President of Development at Globiwest Hospitality. “Rancho Cucamonga is an incredible community, and we wanted to create a space that feels like a true retreat—where guests can unwind, experience exceptional hospitality, and enjoy amazing food and drink at Durango Cocina.”</p>

<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="936" height="667" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Pic-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2651" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Pic-1.jpg 936w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Pic-1-300x214.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Pic-1-768x547.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Pic-1-104x74.jpg 104w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Pic-1-850x606.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Sanctity Hotel brings new boutique luxury and charm to Rancho Cucamonga</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">The family and I recently snuck away to Sanctity for a memorable day and night of comfort and culinary delight. Our getaway began when we checked into a spacious new suite with two queen beds, topped with high-quality linens with plush pillows, and accented by intricately gorgeous, hand-carved wooden head boards imported from Mexico.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The room also came with a 65-inch flat screen HDTV, a work desk with ergonomic chair, wireless internet, mini-fridge, coffee maker, and a bright and luxurious bathroom with extra storage space and beautiful tile.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="576" height="313" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2652" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-2.jpg 576w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-2-300x163.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Sanctity rooms are designed with a unique blend of modern luxury and classic charm</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Once acquainted with our room, we explored the property. The white, mission-style design of the exterior compliments the hotel’s modern interior, where guests will be enchanted by a unique interpretation of the five fundamental elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space. Inspired by the palaces of India and brought to life with natural materials, the interiors are grounded in earth through the use of hand-carved Parota wood sourced from Mexico.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Air and space are reflected in the open layouts and expansive flow of the property, including Rancho Cucamonga’s first rooftop bar. Perched above the Sanctity Hotel, the rooftop location boasts sweeping views of the nearby San Gabriel Mountains, and the vibrant Rancho Cucamonga cityscape.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="576" height="482" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2653" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-3.jpg 576w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-3-300x251.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Rooftop restaurant / bar is a place for family and friends to meet for great food, drinks and breathtaking views. </em></figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>We had appetizers at the rooftop and were amazed by the ambiance and flavors. Our meal began with fresh and delicious <em>Ceviche Classico De Camaron</em>, made with shrimp marinated with cucumber, onion, tomato, avocado, and house-made <em>salsa marisquera</em>, served with crispy <em>tostadas</em>. The tasty guacamole was blended with grilled onion, cilantro, and serrano. Served with crispy house-made <em>tostadas</em>.</p>

<p>After the appetizers we were ready for the main course at Durango Cocina (<a href="https://www.durangococina.com/">https://www.durangococina.com/</a>), the hotel’s signature restaurant. Led by Chef Alex Carrasco, a Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient, Durango Cocina’s menu pays tribute to the culinary heritage of Durango, Mexico, while integrating locally sourced ingredients and modern cooking techniques.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="666" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2654" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-4.jpg 666w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-4-300x270.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The carne asada at Durango Cocina is a must for any steak lover</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Our dinner at Durango began with spinach salad, with garlic-sautéed spinach, quesillo cheese, crispy onions, and lime-infused spinach chips. For the main course I experienced the carne asada plate, with dry-aged ribeye with guajillo potato purée, roasted vegetables, and chipotle demi-glace. This succulent masterpiece came to the table with a tiny grill so I could keep roasting the steak or heat my tortillas and veggies.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="936" height="396" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-5.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2655" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-5.jpg 936w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-5-300x127.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-5-768x325.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-5-850x360.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-5-618x260.jpg 618w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The churros are sweet, crunchy and cooked to perfection</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>For dessert, we sampled two delectable types of churros. The first was Chocalete Caliente Churros, filled with chocolate, hazelnut sauce, rose petals, and served with hot cocoa. The second was Churros Con Crema De Cacahuate, with peanut butter cream and dulce de leche ice cream. The churros were crunchy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside, and the sauces complimented the dish nicely.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After dinner I worked out at the state-of-the-art fitness center, where I walked a few miles on a treadmill with interactive world locations on the screen. Walking along a tropical beach with waves crashing at my feet made the workout enjoyable and before I knew it, I had walked three miles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The next morning, we were back at Durango Cocina for a great breakfast. I devoured Huevos rancheros, a traditional Mexican breakfast with fried eggs and beans on top of lightly fried corn tortillas and smothered in a salsa. The kids split pancakes with ice cream and fruit on top.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="936" height="634" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-6.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2656" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-6.jpg 936w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-6-300x203.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-6-768x520.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-6-850x576.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Victoria Gardens mall and Bass Pro Shops are only a couple miles away from Sanctity Hotel</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">After breakfast we drove a couple miles to Victoria Gardens, an outdoor shopping mall, with tons of shopping, dining, and entertainment options including The Apple Store, Macy’s, JCPenney, AMC Theatres, the Victoria Gardens Cultural Art Center, the Rancho Cucamonga Public Library, and over 150 retailers and eateries. The mall is also home to one of my family&#8217;s favorite stores: Bass Pro Shops.</p>

<p>At Bass Pro Shops (<a href="https://www.basspro.com/">https://www.basspro.com/</a>), aka Outdoor World, we love the giant aquarium with live fish, and all of the stuffed animals such as bears, hogs, deer and wolves. The humungous store also has incredible sections for camping, fishing, hunting, boating and outdoor clothes. There is even a restaurant and activities for kids on select days.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignleft size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="346" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2657" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-7.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-7-300x288.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Thriv Studio offers cutting edge treatments for everyone seeking relaxation and relief</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Back at Sanctity Hotel, I experienced Thriv Studio (<a href="https://thriv-studio.com/">https://thriv-studio.com/</a>), which offers “groundbreaking therapies that reduce stress, enhance circulation, and accelerate healing. Our scientifically backed approach is tailored to restore balance, improve vitality, and elevate your life.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thriv offers treatments such as the HOCATT Infrared Ozone Sauna, an advanced wellness system designed for individuals seeking optimal health and those managing chronic conditions; and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy—a powerful treatment that saturates your body with pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignleft size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="480" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-8.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2658" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-8.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/pic-8-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Lymphatic Drainage Therapy can help reduce swelling and boost immunity</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>My treatment was the Lymphatic Drainage Therapy, a gentle, rhythmic technique designed to encourage lymph flow, reduce swelling, and boost immunity. Paired with BrainTap for enhanced relaxation and mental clarity, each 40-minute session leaves you feeling lighter, clearer, and more balanced. For this 40-minute treatment, I was wrapped in something like a space suit with a bunch of wires that transmitted heat and pressure throughout my body and limbs. I then put on a helmet and fell into deep relaxation for the next 40 minutes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sanctity Hotel is located in the heart of Rancho Cucamonga, near shopping malls, parks, museums and Ontario Intl Airport. It is located at 12255 Base Line Rd, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91739. <h5 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-right">Story and Photos by Greg Aragon.</h5>

<p>I love staying at a nice hotel and my kids love playing in water. So when we visited <a href="https://www.greatwolf.com/southern-california" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Great Wolf Lodge</a> near Anaheim, California, it was a match made in theme park heaven.</p>

<p>On one side, the giant lodge features a 105,000-square-feet indoor water park, packed with exciting tube slides, play structures, pools and more. On the other side, there is a modern hotel, gourmet restaurants, gift shops, and arcade games.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="682" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-1--1024x682.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2016" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-1--1024x682.jpg 1024w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-1--300x200.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-1--768x511.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-1--850x566.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-1-.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Great Wolf Lodge is fun for the whole family.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">The family and I began a recent getaway to Great Wolf Lodge by checking into a comfortable suite on the 9th floor, overlooking Disneyland. The room came with two queen beds, a sleeper sofa, a full bath, mini-fridge, coffee maker, office desk and chair, and a large TV.</p>

<p>The suite also came with a fun, wristband room key that not only got us into the water park, but also opened our room door! The kids loved it and I thought it was a great idea because I am always losing hotel keys and this made that nearly impossible.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignright size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="240" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2017" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-2.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-2-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Hotel rooms are comfortable and open with a fun and useful wristband key.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Once acquainted with the room, we donned our bathing suits and rode the elevator down to the 1st level, where we entered the waterpark, which is free to all hotel guests. Kept at a warm 84 degrees year-round, the humongous park features numerous thrilling water tube rides, a lazy river, a surf simulator, a giant wave pool, and splash pads and little pools for toddlers. And because the waterpark is all inside, it is perfect to visit any time or year!</p>

<p>Our first stop in the water park was Fort Mackenzie, a large, four-story play treehouse-like structure, with water slides, interactive toys and kid-activated features. Sitting atop the structure is a gigantic bucket that fills up every 10 minutes and drops thousands of gallons of water on everyone standing below.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="430" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2018" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-3.jpg 720w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-3-300x179.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The park is full of thrilling waterslides like Mountain Edge Raceway.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Next up was Mountain Edge Raceway, where riders hang on to a water mat and zip down four stories of twists and turns, before popping out for the final straightaway where they can race family and friends.</p>

<p>For a more thrilling adventure me and my son hopped on a tandem raft and jetted down Alberta Falls. This ride sent us down a big tube that goes in and out of the building, with swiftly banking turns and steep pitches before a final, thrilling drop into the plunge pool.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="720" height="560" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2019" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-4.jpg 720w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-4-300x233.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Alberta Falls is an exciting tandem ride.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>And then there was Coyote Canyon, a scary-fun, 40-foot drop into a water-jet-fueled vortex. After plunging four stories into the whirling basin, riders then circle ferociously around the center on your tube before spinning down to a perfect splash landing.</p>

<p>Another thrilling attraction is Wolf Rider Wipeout, an indoor surf simulator, with three different riding positions for beginners to experts. To begin, I hopped on a bodyboard and tried to keep my balance as endless waves were raging below, trying to tip me over. I wiped out a couple of times, but had a lot of fun.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="1012" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-5-6.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2020" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-5-6.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-5-6-237x300.jpg 237w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-5-6-768x973.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">There is also lots of fun things for the little ones.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Other fun attractions in the water park include a huge wave pool, a magical water area for little kids, and a lazy river ride that flows around the park.</p>

<p>Back in the hotel area, we had a great pizza lunch at Hungry As A Wolf cafe, and then the kids put on their Wolf Passes. Available for purchase, these passes allow kids to experience all kinds of fun at the lodge.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap">Wolf Passes include a magic wand so they can play Magiquest, a treasure hunting game that sparks the imagination, where kids explore the lodge looking for secret clues and mysterious objects. By pointing their magic wands at different objects and pictures around the hotel, kids can set off lights and recordings from Vellara, the realm of imagination, and help Guardians to protect the Realm Portals.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="576" height="385" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2021" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-7.jpg 576w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-7-300x201.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">A Wolf Pass includes a game of Magiquest, a magical and memorable treasure hunt throughout the hotel.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Along the way, kids can befriend the Treetop Pixies, battle evil dragons, recover stolen jewels from the Goblin King, and earn the title of Master Magi. The game can take hours, so parents may want their kids to spread it our and play a little here and there. Kids can even take their wands home and continue the adventure the next time they visit Great Wolf Lodge.</p>

<p>The Wolf Pass also lets kids create their own stuffed animal at Build-A-Bear. Here they can pick their own lovable character and the staff will fill it on the spot at a stuffing machine. Then kids can pick clothing and hats for their new furry friend. My kids absolutely loved this!</p>

<p>The Wolf Pass also includes coupons for arcade games, free candy and ice cream, a round of mini-golf and bowling, and a VR experience.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="660" height="566" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-8.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2022" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-8.jpg 660w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-8-300x257.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The lodge also features a full arcade with scores of fun, interactive games and rides.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>After a long, fun game of MagiQuest, we headed back to the water park to play in the water and relax on deck chairs.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignright size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="204" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-9.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2023" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-9.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/pic-9-300x170.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The Loose Moose Family Kitchen has great food and great prices.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">For dinner we experienced Loose Moose Family Kitchen, an all-you-can-eat buffet of fresh and delicious globally-inspired entrees, including a variety of salads, meats and seafood. Our dinner was highlighted by tasty pasta, salmon, clam chowder, salad, rolls and fresh cut roast beef. The kids devoured pizza, fries and chicken tenders. For dessert, we shared tiramisu and ice cream.</p>

<p>After dinner there was a dance party for the kids near the lobby. With Baby Shark blasting on the speakers, about 20 little kids jumped around for about 30 minutes, which helped them fall asleep after an exciting day.</p>

<p>The next morning we were back at Loose Moose for a delectable breakfast buffet of pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, muffins, toast, juice, coffee and more. After breakfast it was back to the water park, where we spent hours zooming down water slides, riding waves and playing in the splash pads.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap">To some, paradise is a memorable dinner overlooking a moonlit bay. To others it is lounging with your toes in the sand or listening to boats bob in the water from a luxurious suite. To me it&#8217;s all of the above, and more, which is why I love Bahia Resort Hotel (<a href="http://www.bahiahotel.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">www.bahiahotel.com</a>)on San Diego&#8217;s majestic Mission Bay.</p>

<p>Set on a 14-acre peninsula in Mission Bay, Bahia Resort is a slice of heaven with a sandy beach, winding paths through lush tropical gardens, a gourmet restaurant, a sparkling pool area, a giant Mississippi River-styled paddlewheel boat, water activities, and lots of fun and games for the whole family.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The family and I recently snuck away to Bahia Resort for three days of fun and relaxation in the San Diego sun.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="594" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-2A-1024x594.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1755" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-2A-1024x594.jpg 1024w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-2A-300x174.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-2A-768x446.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-2A-850x493.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-2A.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The resort sits on Mission Bay and its on private beach.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Our getaway began when we checked into a luxurious suite, located steps from the water. Covering more than 600 sq-ft, the room came with a separate bedroom with a large king bed, a kitchenette area with a breakfast bar, sink, microwave, and mini refrigerator, a living room area with sleeper sofa, office desk, comfortable lounge chair and lots of space.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1756" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-3.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-3-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Bay suites are steps from the sand and the water</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignright size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="270" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1757" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-4.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-4-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Resort suites are spacious and luxurious</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">The best feature in the suite was the patio, where a table and chairs overlooked gorgeous Mission Bay. From here we had memorable views of the bay and all the colorful boats docked about 50 yards from our room. We also had a front row seat to the Bahia Belle, hotel’s iconic paddle wheel ship.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When not enjoying our room, we strolled along the hotel’s sandy beach, lounged by the pool, or enjoyed resort activities. One of the funnest things we did was rent a surrey bike and pedal around Mission Bay on a well kept walking/biking path. The two-hour journey followed the sand past beautiful, waterfront homes, boats, kayakers, paddle boarders and more.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignright size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="193" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-5.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1758" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-5.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-5-300x161.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>A bike / walking path allows guest to explore around the bay</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Along the way we passed a little house where people can adopt a puppy, and rode the bike to a little park, where the kids played and we rested our legs. We then pedaled to Catamaran Resort, a sister property of Bahia Resort also set on Mission Bay. Here we bought a smoothie and relaxed on the sand.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Back at Bahia, we prepared for dinner at Dockside 1953, the resort’s signature restaurant. Situated just steps from the beach and marina, the nautical-inspired restaurant spoils guests with a spacious outdoor patio featuring cozy fire pits, a covered trellis, and stunning unobstructed views of Mission Bay and the Bahia Belle.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="549" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-6-1024x549.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1759" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-6-1024x549.jpg 1024w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-6-300x161.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-6-768x412.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-6-850x456.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-6.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Dockside 1953 offers great food in a fabulous, intimate location</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Our dinner at Dockside 1953 began on the patio, overlooking the bay and the Mississippi paddle Wheel, and a little, old speed boat sitting in the sand as decoration. Seated next to a firepit, we started with fresh and delicious West Coast oysters, with apple mignonette, cocktail sauce and horseradish; and coconut snapper ceviche, with local Pacific snapper, coconut, ginger red onion, cilantro, lime juice, and plantain chips.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignleft size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="270" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1760" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-7.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-7-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Steak and seafood is a great choice at Dockside 1953</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">For the main course we enjoyed seared Skuna Bay salmon, with lemon risotto, grilled asparagus, and chive caviar beurre blanc; and a hangar steak, with mashed potatoes, charred broccoli rabe, caramelized shallot, maitre de butter, red wine demi glaze. The kids had a burger and chicken nuggets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The next morning we walked across the parking lot and rented a beautiful, 20-ft Hurricane power boat from Action Sport Rentals (<a href="https://www.actionsportrentals.com/bahia-resort/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">www.actionsportrentals.com/bahia-resort/</a>), which partners with Bahia Resort. The company is a one-stop shop for boat, sailboat, kayak rentals, and more.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-8.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1761" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-8.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-8-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-8-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Renting a boat while at Bahia resort is memorable family adventure</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>To start our voyage, we watched a short safety video and learned how to work the boat controls, which are surprisingly easy. We then hopped in and cruised into the morning sun to explore Mission Bay.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Spanning more than 4,000 acres, Mission Bay is an artificial, saltwater bay that is part of the recreational Mission Bay Park, the largest man-made aquatic park in the United States. It was created for recreational activities such as <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wakeboarding" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wakeboarding</a>, <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_water_craft" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jet skiing</a>, <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailing" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sailing</a>, <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camping" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">camping</a>, cycling, <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jogging" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">jogging</a>, <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roller_skating" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">roller skating</a>, <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skateboarding" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">skateboarding</a>, and <a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunbathing" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sunbathing</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="385" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-9-1024x385.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1762" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-9-1024x385.jpg 1024w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-9-300x113.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-9-768x289.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-9-850x320.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-9.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Mission Bay is the largest man-made aquatic park in the United States</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">During our trip, we cruised past other boaters and paddle boarders and went under a big bridge. We also sailed by Catamaran Resort, where we rented a similar boat last summer. The vessel handled very well and had lots of room and shade for the family to enjoy the ride.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the cruise, we discovered another fun thing to do. Across the street from Bahia Resort we found Belmont Park (<a href="https://www.belmontpark.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">https://www.belmontpark.com/</a>), an historic 100-year-old, oceanfront amusement park. Featuring an old fashioned wooden rollercoaster and numerous thrilling rides and attractions, the park is fun for the whole family.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="869" height="563" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-10.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1763" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-10.jpg 869w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-10-300x194.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-10-768x498.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-10-850x551.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 869px) 100vw, 869px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>100-year-old Belmont Park is a thrilling waterfront Amusement Park</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>One of my favorites rides at Belmont Park is the local landmark <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Dipper_(Belmont_Park)" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Giant Dipper</a> roller, a coaster that zips and turns up and down at speeds up to 48 miles per hour. Other things to do at the park include a carousel, mini-golf, rock climbing, an intense obstacle course for kids, a huge indoor pool, and Shipwreck Cove, a 30-foot interactive tower ride where guests pull themselves up using a rope attached to the gondola before experiencing a thrilling drop and rotating 360 degrees for a full park perspective.</p>

<p>Back at Bahia Resort, we relaxed by the pool and soaked in the Jacuzzi.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="583" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-11-1024x583.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1764" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-11-1024x583.jpg 1024w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-11-300x171.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-11-768x437.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-11-850x484.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-11-384x220.jpg 384w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/pic-11.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The resort boasts a relaxing, paradise-like pool area.</em></figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>The next morning and fog hovered over the bay, we were back at Dockside 1953 for a great breakfast. I had delicious plate of carne asade chilaquiles, with crunchy corn tortillas, beans, cheese, cilantro salsa, pickled onions, over easy eggs and topped with avocado slices; The wife had the American Breakfast, with eggs, smoked apple bacon, breakfast potatoes, and toast. The kids devoured buttermilk pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries.&nbsp;</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-right">Story and photographs by Greg Aragon</h5>

<p class="has-drop-cap">It&#8217;s called Fantasy Springs Resort for good reason. It sits in the middle of the Palm Springs desert like a giant oasis, welcoming travelers with flowing fountains, swaying palm trees, a sparkling pool, a luxurious hotel, and an award-winning casino with a world-class entertainment center.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The family and I recently snuck away to <a href="https://www.fantasyspringsresort.com/">Fantasy Springs</a> for two nights and three days of fun and relaxation. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="963" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1437" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-1.jpg 963w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-1-300x187.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-1-768x478.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-1-850x529.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Fantasy Springs Resort Casino is an oasis in the desert near Palm Springs</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Our getaway began when we checked into a comfortable room with giant windows, overlooking the large pool area and the beautiful desert landscape beyond. Boasting two queen beds, a large bathroom, mini-fridge, coffee maker, big screen TV, and a work station desk, the room had everything we needed for our home base.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1438" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-2.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Pic-2-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Hotel rooms are comfortable and offer great views</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>When not in the room, admiring the desert views, we were having fun around the property. Our favorite spot was the pool deck, where we swam and lounged, and relaxed in the Jacuzzi.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1016" height="743" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-34.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1440" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-34.jpg 1016w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-34-300x219.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-34-768x562.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-34-850x622.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1016px) 100vw, 1016px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Fantasy Springs pool area is fun for the whole family</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>For food, we discovered numerous options at the resort. There was gourmet steaks and fresh seafood at Bistro, bold modern Asian cuisine at Joy, sumptuous pizza at Pizza Kitchen, endless plates the all-you-can-eat Fresh Grill Buffet, exciting California cuisine at POM, and more.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignleft size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="393" height="303" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-5.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1441" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-5.jpg 393w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-5-300x231.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Fantasy Springs is full of delicious restaurant options, offering items such as chili chilaquiles</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>We decided upon POM, where we enjoyed a delicious dinner. Our meal began with a chilled shrimp cocktail, with large, fresh shrimp in cocktail sauce, grain mastard-horseradish aioli, and rainbow micro greens. For our main course we devoured a succulent filet mignon, with garlic whipped potatoes, tobacco onions and burgundy demi-glace; and pan asian salmon, with sesame-soy glaze, stir fried vegetables, crispy noodles and steamed jasmine rice.</p>

<p>The kids ate a burger and fries and chicken strips and milk on the side. For dessert we all split a skillet chocolate-chip cookie à la mode, topped with vanilla ice cream; and a pineapple-coconut cheese cake with a sour cream top, graham cracker bottom, pineapple relish and vanilla anglaise.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After dinner, we watched a movie in the room and the kids went to bed. I then snuck out to play some slots and a few hands of poker in the casino. The casino features 1,800 of the hottest slots, table games, bingo action, and off-track betting in the Coachella Valley.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-6.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1442" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-6.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-6-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-6-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The casino all the best table games and hundreds of modern slot machines</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p class="has-drop-cap">The next morning I worked out at the fitness center and then we returned to POM for a wonderful breakfast. I enjoyed juevos rancheros, with fried eggs set atop crunchy corn tortillas with refried beans, cheese sour cream, guacamole and ranchero sauce. We also had delightful buttermilk pancakes with blueberries, and a plate of banana bread French toast, with bananas, strawberries, walnuts and whipped cream.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1443" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-7.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-7-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-7-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Civic Center Park in Palm Desert is a short drive from the resort</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>After breakfast, we drove a couple miles to <a href="https://www.myrecreationdistrict.com/park/palm-desert-civic-center-park">Civic Center Park</a> in nearby Palm Desert. Here we found 70 acres of fun, with a large lake full of ducks and swans looking for a snack, fun playgrounds for the kids, modern art scattered about, benches and barbecues, lots of walking trails and more. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignright size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="449" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-8.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1444" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-8.jpg 449w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-8-225x300.jpg 225w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>kids love the arcade at Fantasy Lanes Bowling Center</em>.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Back at Fantasy Springs Resort we found more excitement at the Fantasy Lanes Bowling Center and Arcade, where we bowled a few frames and the kids played an assortment of fun video games. We then walked next door for lunch at Lique, an old fashioned ice cream parlor with old school ice cream flavors in a hip, sexy environment.</p>

<p>For lunch we had fish and chips and a couple <em>carne asada t</em>acos. For a treat, we then split an old-fashioned Lique-Ity Split banana split with banana, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream, hot fudge, mixed nuts, crushed pineapple and strawberry topping. </p>

<p>After lunch we returned to our favorite spot next to the pool, where we swam, lounged and relaxed in the Jacuzzi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides luxury hotel rooms, great restaurants, a fun pool area, and exciting gambling, Fantasy Springs also boasts the award-winning Clive Clark-designed Eagle Falls Golf Course, a gorgeous course set against the Santa Rosa and Chocolate Mountains.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Eagle Falls is Coachella Valley’s only golf course on the same site as a casino which offers resort guests the convenience of stepping out of the hotel lobby, dropping their clubs at a bag drop and riding over to the course in less than a minute. The course treats golfers to unique vistas throughout the terrain including a 40-foot waterfall on the 18th hole, rolling hills, and one hole is an almost exact replica of the “Postage Stamp” 8th hole at the famous Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="800" height="450" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-9.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-1445" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-9.jpg 800w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-9-300x169.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/pic-9-768x432.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Eagle Falls Golf Course is one of the top public golf courses in the Palm Springs area</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Since its opening, Eagle Falls has consistently been rated one of the top public courses in the Palm Springs area and was recently named one of Golfweek’s “Top Casino Golf Courses in the United States.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I get stopped by golfers all the time telling me what a perfect golfing gem Eagle Falls is,” said Eagle Falls Golf Director, Tom Silva. “The setting is magnificent, making for a perfect day on the course, no matter your skill level.”</p>

<p>The resort also hosts top name acts at its world-class Special Events Center. This season’s line-up includes legendary acts such as Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening on May 24 and Dustin Lynch in July. Recent entertainment included Ice Cube; and classic game shows, The Price Is Right Live and Dancing With the Stars, to name a few.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap">When winter hits Southern California, I always find time for a trip to Big Bear Lake, one of my favorite mountain destinations for playing in the snow, relaxing in cabins and boutique hotels, and enjoying incredible lake and alpine views.</p>

<p>Last week was no different as the family and I checked into a great hotel room at Home2 Suites by <a href="https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/ontbeht-home2-suites-big-bear-lake/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hilton Big Bear Lake</a>. Ideally located next to the lake, the ski slopes, and all the fun shopping and restaurants in town, the hotel had everything we needed for three days and two nights of snow fun.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="777" height="821" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-881" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-1.jpg 777w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-1-284x300.jpg 284w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-1-768x811.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Big Bear Lake in winter is a giant playground of family-fun activities.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Our suite was like a small house, with all the amenities. It came with two queen beds, a sleeper sofa, large TV, office desk area, and a whole wall lined with tons of cabinets and storage space. The room also came with a full kitchen, replete with apartment refrigerator, sink, dishwasher, dishes and silverware, microwave, coffee maker and an electric hot plate.</p>

<p>Beyond the room, the rest of the modern hotel is just as great. It offers complimentary breakfast each morning, movie nights for kids, a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor pool and Jacuzzi and more.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="936" height="556" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-882" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-2.jpg 936w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-2-300x178.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-2-768x456.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-2-850x505.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-2-413x244.jpg 413w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 936px) 100vw, 936px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Home2 Suites by Hilton Big Bear Lake has everything a family needs for a fun stay in Big Bear.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>When not relaxing in Home2 Suites hotel, we were playing in the snow and exploring town. One of our favorite spots was <a href="https://bigbearsnowplay.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Bear Snow Play</a>, where me and my 7-yr-old son slid down a giant snow slope on big innertubes. We rented the innertubes for the day, so we got to go down the hill about 20 times.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="638" height="1024" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-3-638x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-883" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-3-638x1024.jpg 638w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-3-187x300.jpg 187w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-3-768x1233.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-3-850x1364.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-3.jpg 906w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Big Bear Snow Play offers exciting tube rides and a thrilling obstacle course.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p class="has-drop-cap">Another fun adventure we experienced at Big Bear Snow Play is the Rope Course. This thrilling, aerial act had us walking between 12 and 35 ft in the air, balancing on ropes, crossing bridges and climbing through obstacles &#8212; all from the safety of a secure climbing harness. The ropes course took us on a self-guided tour through more than 30 obstacles spread over 6,400 sq-feet on two levels. After snow tubing and navigating the ropes course, we grabbed some hot dogs and hot chocolate at Big Bear Snow Play’s Base Lodge.</p>

<p>Back at Home2 Suites we hit the indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Perfect for winter, the heated pool was comfortable, Jacuzzi was hot and the there we lots of lounge chairs and towels.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-884" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-4.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-4-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-4-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The indoor pool at Home2 Suites is perfect for those chilly winter days.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>For dinner, we discovered <a href="https://www.oldcountryinnrestaurant.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Old Country Inn</a>, a quaint, family-run restaurant &amp; bar serving traditional American &amp; German fare in a rustic space that is quintessential Big Bear.</p>

<p>For dinner I enjoyed traditional wienerschnitzel, with lightly breaded grilled chicken that was topped with homemade German gravy. This succulent dish came with homemade potato pancakes, red cabbage, and sauerkraut. We also sampled the incredible 16 oz rib eye steak with veggies and mashed potatoes. From the kids menu we ordered a burger and fries and chicken nuggets. For dessert we split the Landslide, a decadent and delicious mountain of vanilla ice cream, topped with melted hot fudge sauce and whipped cream, laying atop a fresh baked brownie.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="alignleft size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="360" height="270" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-5.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-885" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-5.jpg 360w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-5-300x225.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The Old Country inn serves old fashioned comfort food, like rib eye steaks and wienerschnitzel.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>After dinner we walked around Big Bear Village, the town’s charming center square of shops, restaurants, art galleries and pubs.</p>

<p>The next morning, I worked out in the hotel’s state-of-the-art fitness center and then joined the family for the hotel’s daily, complimentary buffet breakfast. Held in a large, light-filled room, the breakfast includes tasty items such as scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage, fruit juices, an array coffee drinks, muffins, oatmeal and cereals, bread, and a make-your-own waffle station!</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap">After breakfast we experienced the <a href="https://bigbearzoo.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Big Bear Alpine Zoo</a>, a zoo that is actually a rehabilitation facility offering injured, orphaned and imprinted wild animals a second chance in nature. Officials say that the vast majority of animals brought here for rehabilitation are successfully released back into their native environment. “Those that remain with us on exhibit are either too injured or have been imprinted by humans and cannot be released back into the wild to care for themselves,” says the zoo website.</p>

<p>Highlights of our visit to the zoo include a massive grizzly bear moving around in a tunnel, a huge gray wolf roaming around his enclosure, cute little foxes and racoons looking for attention, and a large bald eagle eating a rat, while flapping his mammoth wings. The zoo is currently home to mammals, birds, and reptiles representing over 85 species and is located in San Bernardino County, the largest County in the contiguous United States.</p>

<p>After the zoo we had lunch at the Old German Deli, one of my favorite spots for authentic German sandwiches. For lunch we had delicious Schinkenwurst sandwich with a side of potato pea soup, and a German ham sandwich with potato salad. All sandwiches come with a choice of side, and a boiled egg and pickle. Schinkenwurst is a German luncheon cold cut, similar to bologna, that usually consists of pork, veal, and ham.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

</div>

<p>Back at the hotel we relaxed at the pool and then went to Stater Brothers Market and picked up a a hot, roasted chicken, rolls and some potato salad for dinner in our room.</p>

<p>After dinner the kids had a great time watching a movie in the hotel’s Kid Theater, where nightly movies are shown for the little ones. Each evening around six, kids can pick a movie they want, and watch it on a big TV screen, in big leather seats. And while watching, they can have free candy and snacks.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="922" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-8.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-880" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-8.jpg 922w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-8-300x195.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-8-768x499.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/pic-8-850x552.jpg 850w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 922px) 100vw, 922px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">kids love movie nights at Home2 Suites hotel.</figcaption></figure>

<p>During our movie night, my son selected “The Sponge Bob Movie: Sponge out of Water.” He had a lot of fun because he watched it with a large group of kids his age that were visiting from Guadalajara.</p>

<p>Big Bear currently has snow and it is a great time to visit for skiing, snow tubing, and playing by the lake. <h5 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-right">Story and photos by Greg Aragon</h5>

<p class="has-drop-cap">It’s always exciting to discover a new hotel destination, especially when it is full of pleasant surprises, and is an easy drive from Los Angeles. Such is the case with the Hyatt Regency Irvine, a newly-remodeled luxury hotel, with great location, modern rooms, a gourmet restaurant, an incredible pool area, and much, much more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>My getaway to the Hyatt Regency Irvine (<a href="http://www.hyatt.com/hyatt-regency/en-US/snari-hyatt-regency-irvine">www.hyatt.com/hyatt-regency/en-US/snari-hyatt-regency-irvine</a>) began when the family and I checked into a luxurious and fun, Bunk Bed Suite on the 14th floor, overlooking the expansive hotel property and the Irvine skyline.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="566" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-1-1024x566.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-471" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-1-1024x566.jpg 1024w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-1-300x166.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-1-768x424.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-1-850x470.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-1.jpg 1084w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The 516-room Hyatt recently completed a $55 million renovation</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Perfect for families, the approximately 850-square-foot suite featured a bedroom for the kids with a bunk bed, including a queen mattress and a full mattress. The room also offered a sleeper sofa, large TV, mini-fridge, bathroom, and views of the pool. Needless to say the kids loved this room. It was there own little hideaway.</p>

<p>The front room of the suite boasted a big king bed for the grown-ups, a comfortable seating area, large TV, fridge, coffee maker, another full bathroom, and a huge balcony with dining table and seating overlooking the city. Needless to say we adults loved this area, especially when the kids were in their room playing.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="792" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-473" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-2.jpg 792w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-2-300x227.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-2-768x581.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 792px) 100vw, 792px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Bunk Bed Suite is fun for kids and perfect for families</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Beyond the suite, we found happiness at the pool area, where a giant LED TV screen, two twisting water slides, a Jacuzzi, an outdoor pool bar with a full menu; and cabanas surround an oasis in the sun. This was our favorite spot to relax, play and watch a colorful loop of landscape videos on the mammoth TV screen. We also liked that the pool area has a gentle, beach-like slope to enter, making it perfect for toddlers and their parents.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During our stay, we rented a poolside cabana for the day that came with a fridge, TV, couches, and lots of shade and privacy. The cabana was so comfy we had lunch inside it. We went to the hotel’s Market cafe and brought back delicious spicy Korean BBQ beef tacos, with cabbage slaw, sesame seed, cilantro, and salsa; and a chicken pesto panini with sun-dried tomato, pesto mayo and provolone cheese. The kids had chicken tenders and hamburger sliders.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-474" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-3.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-3-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>The Hyatt pool area is an oasis with double barreled slides and a giant TV screen</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>After lunch we took a short drive to Irvine’s Great Park (<a href="http://www.cityofirvine.org/great-park">www.cityofirvine.org/great-park</a>), a massive, 1,300-acre park, with a big, orange, hot air balloon hovering 400 ft above the city, and a bunch of cool free things to do. Located on the former site of the El Toro Marine Base, the Great Park is said to be the first great metropolitan park of the 21st Century and measures nearly twice the size of New York’s Central Park.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The park has play areas for kids with lots of things to climb and hide around, as well as sports fields, walking paths, art galleries, an air museum, a visitor’s center, and a unique Farm + Food Lab that features a hands-on outdoor agricultural classroom. The park also features an old-fashioned horse Carousel and the aforementioned balloon that are both ready to ride each weekend.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="814" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-5-1024x814.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-475" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-5-1024x814.jpg 1024w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-5-300x239.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-5-768x611.jpg 768w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-5-850x676.jpg 850w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-5.jpg 1080w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption"><em>Irvine’s Great Park is twice the size of New York’s Central Park</em>.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Back at the Hyatt Hotel, we prepared for a magical dinner at Warehouse 72 (<a href="http://www.irvine.warehouse72.com">www.irvine.warehouse72.com</a>), the hotel’s signature dining spot.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap">Created by Orange County-based restaurateur Doug Pak, and led by Executive Chef Jaime Salazar, the restaurant is a feast for the eyes and palate. Upon entering, diners are treated to high-definition, moving pictures covering entire walls. Video scenes range from serene boats in harbors to sunsets over the ocean, to Roman statues and swirling color. The images are breathtaking, but the food is even better.</p>

<p>Led by Executive Chef Jaime Salazar, and operated by industry veteran Brendan McManus, the restaurant encourages guests to savor the “essence of Orange County through a food and cocktail menu that harmonizes innovation with traditional favorites.”&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-6.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-476" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-6.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-6-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-pic-6-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Warehouse 72 is memorable dining experience with great food and moving pictures on the walls.</figcaption></figure>

<p>Our meal at Warehouse 72 began with a fresh salad with red and golden beets, whipped goat cheese, arugula, walnuts, balsamic reduction; and charred spanish octopus, with crispy marble potatoes, chorizo and salsa verde.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For the main course we devoured pork belly kimchi fried rice,&nbsp; with crispy pork belly, fried rice, kimchi, gochujang and green onions. This was the best kimchi rice I’ve ever had. With the rice we split a large, delicious rib eye steak, with tiny potatoes. The kids enjoyed chicken nuggets, fries and mac and cheese. For dessert, we split frozen s’mores, with graham cracker crust, chocolate ice cream and marshmallow that was torched tableside; and Butterscotch Budino, butterscotch custard, caramel, dark chocolate pearls and crème chantilly.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="799" height="599" src="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-Pic-7.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-477" srcset="https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-Pic-7.jpg 799w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-Pic-7-300x225.jpg 300w, https://travelingboy.com/adventure/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Hyatt-Regency-Pic-7-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px" /></figure>

<p>After dinner, the kids built a fort in their bunk bed room and we adults relaxed on the balcony of our 14th floor suite, admiring the beautiful lights of Irvine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The next morning we had breakfast at the Market Cafe and then I toured the property. Coming off a $55 million property-wide transformation, Hyatt Regency Irvine is the largest full-service and ultra-refined hospitality experience in the Irvine area. The hotel’s 516 newly renovated rooms and suites feature thoughtfully modern interior design, crafted furnishings and hardware, unique artwork and light fixtures, and curated layouts to fit various lifestyles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Besides the pool and Market Cafe, the hotel boasts a state-of-the-art, 24-hour fitness center; 56,000 sq-ft of conference rooms and event spaces; and great location. The hotel is just two miles from John Wayne Airport and a short drive from major attractions like Disneyland, Knott&#8217;s Berry Farm, South Coast Plaza, and Southern California beaches.</p>

<h5 class="wp-block-heading has-text-align-right">Story and photographs by Greg Aragon</h5>

<p class="has-drop-cap">Catalina is not just an island paradise; it’s a very close island paradise, which makes it a perfect day or weekend getaway for Southern California residents. In fact, at only 22 nautical miles across the sea from Long Beach, the island can be reached by boat in one hour. With this in mind, the family and I recently escaped to the island for a memorable getaway.</p>

<p>Our journey began in downtown Long Beach at <a href="https://catalinaexpress.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Catalina Express</a> where we boarded one of the company’s sleek, catamaran-styled vessels for a one-hour trek across the Catalina Channel.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelingboy.com/travel/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/pic-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-42867"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Catalina is a paradise only 22 miles off the Southern California Coast.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Featuring comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, lots of big windows and a full bar and snack shop, the boat makes for a fun trip. Highlights of the crossing included incredible views of the legendary Queen Mary; the giant, white geodesic cruise ship dome (former home to the Howard Hughes “Spruce Goose”); the beautiful Long Beach cityscape and a few playful dolphins following the boat.</p>

<p>For our crossing we upgraded our seats to the Commodore Lounge, where passengers enjoy priority boarding and check-in privileges, roomier and more intimate seating areas, and a complimentary beverage and snack.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelingboy.com/travel/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/pic-2.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-42868"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Cruising aboard Catalina Express is the best way to get to the island.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>When we reached the island, the captain anchored in the harbor at Avalon. Here we were greeted by schools of bright orange Garibaldi – the California state fish, along with a bustling little town, full of colorful boats and yachts, boutique hotels and shops, and scores of vacationers.</p>

<p>We then strolled a few minutes to the <a href="https://theavalonhotel.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Avalon Hotel</a> where we would spend the next three days and two nights.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelingboy.com/travel/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/pic-3.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-42869"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The Avalon Hotel offers boutique luxury with incredible views.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>Located on a hill, in the heart of Catalina Island, The Avalon Hotel overlooks the island coast in all its splendor. The property offers 15 luxurious, boutique rooms. Some are uniquely configured with an assortment of balconies offering sweeping views of Avalon and the harbor. All rooms include comfortable beds, premium linens, flat-screen TVs, a desk, microwave, refrigerator, and private bathrooms. Select rooms include a wet bar and an option of a Murphy bed.</p>

<p>We stayed in Room 101 and it was unforgettable. The first thing we saw when opening the door to this room was a gorgeous view of Avalon Harbor coming from a large window. The scene was so beautiful and colorful that it looked fake. But it was as real as the rest of this charming hotel.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img decoding="async" src="https://travelingboy.com/travel/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/pic-4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-42870"/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Avalon Hotel rooms also offer spectacular views.</figcaption></figure>
</div>

<p>The room also came with a huge, open balcony, with comfortable chairs and more impressive views. Other highlights included a Murphy bed, handmade natural soaps, fully lined bathrobes for guests to use, and a stately bathroom with tub and shower, upscale amenities, and signature toiletries.</p>

<p>Our room was next to the lobby and the lush, peaceful courtyard. Adorned with plants and trees, a trickling fountain, and a koi fish pond, the courtyard is where complimentary breakfast is held each morning.</p>

<p>Once acquainted with the hotel, we walked a couple minutes for a delicious lunch at <a href="https://www.bluewatergrill.com/location/catalina-island/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bluewater Avalon</a>. Located on big wooden piers, overlooking the water, the restaurant boasts a tantalizing menu, specializing in fresh seafood and tender meats.</p>

<p>Our lunch began with fresh baked bread and a tasty jumbo shrimp cocktail appetizer. I then enjoyed a delicious bowl of cioppino, with clams, shrimp, calamari, local fish and vegetables in a rich tomato broth. Next we shared a plate of light and crispy fish and chips, while the kids had chicken tenders and a hamburger.</p>

<p>After lunch we walked next door to tiny Avalon Beach, where we played in the water and made sand castles and watched people swim back and forth to their boats that are anchored in the harbor about 50 yards offshore. We then headed back to the Avalon Hotel and relaxed on the rooftop deck, admiring expansive views of the beach, hillside homes and hotels and the iconic Catalina Casino.</p>

<p>Probably the most famous structure on the island, the round-shaped Catalina Casino was built in 1929 as one of the first theater’s in the world to be designed specifically for the new “talkie” movies. The building features hand-painted murals, by John Gabriel Beckman, whose work also adorns Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.</p>

<p>The casino was also a popular spot during the Big Band era, when each week hundreds of people would sail to the island to see big bands with the likes of Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, Woody Herman, Gene Autry and other greats play on one of the biggest wooden dance floors the world had yet seen.</p>

<p>The next morning we enjoyed a healthy and hearty complimentary breakfast in the serene courtyard at the Avalon Hotel. The breakfast included hard boiled eggs, toast and muffins, cereals, coffee and juices.</p>

<p>After breakfast we walked to <a href="http://www.catalinaislandgolfcart.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Catalina Golf Cart Rentals</a> for a fun and unforgettable, 90-minute golf cart ride around the island.</p>

<p>Beginning across the street from the beach, our journey took us up a steep hill, where we encountered spectacular views of the ocean and coastline. We then winded through the island’s beautiful and rugged interior, passing hidden homes and numerous tiny vans and cars. Because the island is so small, golf carts and tiny, imported cars are what locals use for transportation.</p>

<p class="has-drop-cap">At one point in our journey we came to a dead end street at the base of a hill, where a group of deer came up to our cart to share our sunflower seeds. If you wanna see the island, a golf cart is one of the best and most fun ways to do it.</p>

<p>After touring the island we experienced lunch at <a href="https://www.catalinalobstertrap.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lobster Trap</a>.</p>

<p>The restaurant is owned by commercial fisherman Caleb Lins, who searches the fertile waters off the Channel Islands in his 40-foot boat, looking for the freshest local fish and California spiny lobster to catch for his customers.</p>

<p>Our Lobster Trap lunch began with fresh Hawaiian poke, with tuna sashimi on a bed of salad. Next we shared a creamy bowl of clam chowder with lots of tasty clams and potatoes. We then sampled fish and chips and a delicious lobster sandwich, while the kids had a burger and chicken tenders.</p>

<p>After lunch we grabbed ice cream at Lloyd’s of Avalon, a Catalina tradition for more than 80 years that is famous for its saltwater taffy and one-time patron, Marilyn Monroe, who used to live on the island. We then spent the afternoon relaxing on the beach.</p>

<p>For dinner, we got sandwich stuff at the local market and enjoyed a lovely dinner on our balcony at the Avalon Hotel. As the sun went down, we watched boats bob in the harbor and waves crash on the shore.</p>

<p>We concluded our island visit with breakfast in the courtyard and then an exciting voyage back to the mainland aboard Catalina Express.</p>
