Who’s On Your List?

Heather Kobler

In the late 70’s a book called: “The Book of Lists” was published.  One of my favorite chapters was lists of celebrities who picked 10 people to spend an evening in their home for dinner and conversation. Can you imagine being able to have anyone you admired, alive or dead from history spend an evening in your home? Just the thought of hosting a gathering like that is intoxicating to me.

Last year, I was an UBER driver for several months and depending on the demeanor of a rider, I would ask them if they wanted to answer the question of the day, which was; “Which 10 would you invite”? The question itself can be a little overwhelming because who thinks about how nice it would be to have just one person you admire come spend an evening in your home? But to be able pick 10 is extraordinary!

I would tell my riders to take a moment to think about it and I was constantly surprised by the picks of younger people. Many would pick singers and movie stars, but many would choose people like, Einstein, Carl Sagan, Jesus, The Disciple’s, Van Gogh, JFK, Churchill, Earhart, Lindberg, Picasso, Monet, Howard Hughes, Madam Curie, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, Jonas Salk, Bill O’Reilly, Mike Wallace, Ansel Adams, Lewis & Clark, Danial Boone, various presidents, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, W. Somerset Maugham, Hemingway, Emily Bronte, Kahlil Gibran, and many other authors.

Many people choose relatives they have loved and lost and many people pick teachers from all stages of their education. Who doesn’t love and cherish just one teacher they had as a child?  I remember so many of my teachers by name from grammar school, high school and college.

It seems that people today are far more disconnected from one another then they ever have been. They spend so much time and energy playing games, texting, checking emails, and Facebook instead interacting with real people.

To me, there is nothing like “Soul Food”. Talking with someone eye to eye, exchanging ideas, your laughter, compassion, your hopes and dreams and your sense of self. Doing this is like going to the filling station because once you’re done you actually feel more like you’re filled to over flowing.

So go get filled up already!
