No Laughs Today

November 4, 2022

I had to rush to the Philippines to take care of my Dad. He was looking for me. He wanted to die and didn’t want to eat anymore. And most importantly, he said he was losing his memory. None of my other siblings were available so I had to go.

He was delirious when I showed up in the hospital. He didn’t even recognize me. The hospital staff helped pull him through his high fever but after that, they hardly did anything else but insert dextrose needles —- needles he pulled out anyway. The staff wanted to keep him there for a week to “observe” him. I pointed out that what he was doing here (in the expensive room) we could do the same at home. They sheepishly agreed. I got the meds and we’re home now.

He’s still disoriented but he seems more relaxed. This happens for a few days every time he returns from the hospital. we shall wait and see. I hope his memory returns.

I don’t have my usual access to my email program so I can’t prepare my TGIF jokes for you. Sorry. Hopefully, I will have sorted things out by next week.

TGIF people!

    Hi Raoul.

Not sure if you’ll get this message. It bounced back when I replied to the email add you use so am trying this.

I’m so sorry to hear about your Dad. Glad you were able to come home to attend to him. None of your siblings live here in the Philippines anymore?

Yes, the elderly seem to thrive better in the home environment rather than in the hospital. Plus being at home eliminates the risk of charging a hospital acquired infection. Unless of course they need treatment devices and procedures that cannot be applied at home.

I’m sure this precious time with your Dad means a lot to both of you, yes, even if he doesn’t recognize you at the moment. I’d like to think that somehow the Lord will grant him the sense that you, his son, are by his side.

Take care and warmest regards to your wife.

    Hi Raoul,

I can only commiserate with you and your Dad. I got home myself from the hospital myself two days ago and I’m still not fully functional, sleepy most of the time. Hope your Dad gets better soon. What is his name so that we can pray for him?

Best regards and keep safe yourself.

Hope you are now okay Raoul. Don’t overthink and never overstress yourself. We’re not that young anymore. Listen to your body and take some rest also.

Oh my goodness Raoul, Your father and you were I’ll be in our prayers. I am glad your father is home with you and in his familiar surroundings and hopeful he is doing better now. I’m wondering if he had a UTI? It often brings on symptoms of psychosis & confusion. It must be so hard when you live so far from your father and no one else is available to assist. I remember you wanted him to come and stay with you and Jackie but he was not willing to. I do hope that someone would be available to help keep an eye on your father and ensure he can remain safely in his home. Please keep us updated.
    Blessings always!
    Vanessa
