POETIC PERSPECTIVE

I was so tired from the day’s activities that I slept too early Wednesday night. So now, as my wife and our corgis recharge for the night, here I am in front of my laptop wide eyed and awake. The thought that I need to get back to sleep to be ready for the busy day ahead exacerbates my insomnia.

I watch a very disturbing true-to-life video about a dysfunctional family where (underneath the model family persona) unspeakable molestation occurred. The injustice gets me more riled up. Then I read the news — big mistake! The usual murders, corruption, crazy legislation and celebrity scandals make the headlines. Who could possibly sleep when the world depends on you to fix all of its problems, right?

So I wonder what it would be like not to think so much. What would it be like to be an animal? Their focus is just home. So, like any other insomniac, I decide to write a poem.

I wish I were a dog

I wish I were a dog.
All they do is sleep, bark, pee, poop, and eat,
Wag their tales, sniff butts and lick their feet.
They run and scurry and scare all the furries
Then they go back to sleep then repeat.

I wish I were a cat.
All they do is sleep, purr, pee, poop and eat.
They do stretches, jump fences and lick their feet.
They ignore your commands, abhor your demands
Then they go back to sleep and repeat.

Observation

Man’s intelligence is really a curse
We never stop thinking of ways to be first
We pretend to be better
Even though we’re the worst.
We’re obsessed with the glitter
Show off in Facebook and Twitter
Are we really the smartest of critters?

I wish I were a fish.
All they do is sleep with eyes open, swim, poop and eat.
No worries … no problems … cuz they cannot remember
They eat up each other, lay eggs without fathers
Then they go back to sleep and repeat.

Observation

All of these animals
Give a lesson so valuable
That being smart’s overrated
No need to be sophisticated
Better be dumb, better just to — eat sleep and repeat!

THE END

Yeah, I know, I know, the last part needs fixin’ but I just yawned. I think I’ll go back to sleep now.
