Directed by Patricia McGregor, Dul\u00e9 Hill as Nat King Cole in the West Coast premiere of \u201cLights Out: Nat \u201cKing\u201d Cole” now on stage at Geffen Playhouse through March 24, 2019.<\/span> Photo by Jeff Lorch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Under the superb, masterful direction of Patricia McGregor,<\/strong> Dul\u00e9 Hill, <\/strong>renders an extraordinary portrayal of one of America\u2019s <\/strong>most famous entertainers. This story, written by Colman Domingo and<\/strong> McGregor <\/strong>is not what you might think it is.\u00a0 What it is not is a cheerful trip down the memory lane of Cole\u2019s <\/strong>remarkable career where you will be reminded of his velvet throated rendition of such iconic favorites as \u201cMona Lisa,\u201d \u201cNature Boy,\u201d \u201cRoute 66,\u201d \u201cStraighten Up and Fly Right,\u201d \u201cStardust,\u201d and, of course, \u201cUnforgettable,\u201d <\/strong>which would be a good adjective for this production.\u00a0 <\/strong>On the contrary, while you will hear most of his hit songs, Hill\u2019s<\/strong> haunting performance takes us into the dark corners of his Cole\u2019s<\/strong> fame, which had two faces \u2013 his weekly show on NBC Television,<\/strong> which was the only show with a black man as the star, contrasted to the behind the scenes humiliation he had to endure to please the network and the somewhat racist sponsors.\u00a0 In order to satisfy both entities, Cole <\/strong>submitted to having white powder splashed over his face to look less black.\u00a0 Not only did this national singing treasure have to tolerate the \u201cwhite face\u201d procedure, there were many times throughout his career that he had to enter and leave by the back door of the very same venue in which he was performing.\u00a0 Before going on camera, the camouflaging powder was applied by cheerful make-up artist Candy<\/strong>, played with good humor by Marcia Rodd, <\/strong>who also knows how to deliver a song.\u00a0 With a cigarette dangling out of her mouth, she would try to lessen the blow with wisecracks and coddling.<\/p>\n

This is a pivotal night for Cole,<\/strong> as it\u2019s the official end of his half-hour prime time television spot, which had been on air for thirteen months.\u00a0 Instead, the network decided to switch his program to Saturday<\/strong> afternoon, which would be the death knell for the show.\u00a0 The producer, played by Byran Dobson<\/strong> is nervous because Peggy Lee, <\/strong>played by\u00a0Ruby Lewis, <\/strong>who also plays Betty Hutton, <\/strong>hasn\u2019t shown up yet.\u00a0Cole<\/strong> quips, \u201cI\u2019ve been known to carry a song on my own.\u201d\u00a0 As this great singer gets ready for his final appearance, the stage manager, efficiently played by Brandon Ruiter,<\/strong> is busy getting the set ready.\u00a0 He does a lighting and sound check and in short order it becomes clear that the audience will be treated as the studio audience who are being primed to respond to the \u201cApplause\u201d<\/strong> sign that lights up at the appropriate time.\u00a0 His good friend Sammy Davis Jr.,<\/strong> played by the amazingly talented singer and tap dancer Daniel J. Watts,<\/strong> who gives an over-the-top characterization.\u00a0 His job that evening is to warm up the audience before the program begins and to be a sympathetic ear for his friend. He clowns around and does some excellent impersonations, including the famous Marlon Brando<\/strong> mumble. The program is now live and Cole <\/strong>becomes his professional, public image self \u2013 the easy going, friendly singer.<\/p>\n

Hill\u2019s<\/strong> characterization as the \u201cKing,\u201d<\/strong> captures the very essence of this legendary singer, mastering the tone, cadence, and distinct phrasing for which he was known.\u00a0 Under the tutelage of the late Gregory Hines,<\/strong> his tap dancing skills are awesome and he and Sammy <\/strong>tear up the stage more than once in spirited routines. Now remember, this is 1957 <\/strong>and commercials were live. The sponsor was Rheingold Beer<\/strong> and a racist commercial is performed. One of the more offensive commercials he had to endure was for \u201cLights Out Cigarettes, \u201cMade for the urban consumer.\u201d<\/strong> Despite his internationally successful career, Cole<\/strong> does not escape the wrath of the KKK<\/strong>, who burn a cross on his front lawn.<\/p>\n

Since this is the last night of his show, in addition to Peggy Lee<\/strong> and Betty Hutton,<\/strong> Cole <\/strong>also invited Eartha Kitt,<\/strong> reincarnated by sexy Gisela Adisa<\/strong> who also plays a young Natalie Cole<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0 Cole <\/strong>and Hutton <\/strong>sing a fun duet, \u201cAnything You Can Do,\u201d<\/strong> followed by Hutton\u2019s<\/strong> solo \u2013 \u201cI<\/strong> Wish I Didn\u2019t Love You.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 What would be shocking today, the stage manager holds up a sign, which almost looks like a measuring stick, indicating the proper racial distance between each other they had to adhere to. The action moves back and forth between the studio and Cole\u2019s<\/strong> dressing room, nicely designed by Clint Ramos<\/strong> and Ryan Howell,<\/strong> with a moody lighting design by Alan C. Edwards.<\/strong>\u00a0 Seated at his dressing table, Cole<\/strong> is furious about what the network is doing to him.\u00a0\u00a0 Sammy<\/strong> agrees commenting, \u201cMadison Avenue<\/strong> is afraid of the dark.\u201d\u00a0 Now we move from naturalism to the surreal as the ghost of the singer\u2019s mother, Perlina,<\/strong> appears.\u00a0 Played by powerhouse Zonya Love<\/strong>, who fills the stage with her booming, legit voice, she reminds her son of how much she loves him.\u00a0 Mom<\/strong> reminisces about how she started him on piano lessons because he was getting beaten up all the time, and how he met a young Billy Preston (Connor Amacio Matthews.)<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 <\/em>Back in the studio, Eartha Kitt<\/strong> finally shows up and does an over exaggerated rendition of \u201cSanta Baby.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Throughout this last show, the anger inside of Cole <\/strong>begins to ooze out and his mind is in chaos.\u00a0 Encouraged by Davis <\/strong>who tells his friend, \u201cYour silence is strangling you,\u201d he begins to write a very emotional interpretation of \u201cI\u2019m Gonna Sit Right<\/strong> Down and Write Myself a Letter<\/strong>.\u201d His delivery ranges from angrily screaming out the lyrics to reflect his feelings, to a tender ballad, which becomes a manifesto for expressing his deep seeded disgust of the treatment of blacks.\u00a0 This is a highly explosive, dramatic moment as the pent up anger finds an avenue of expression.\u00a0 An astounding tap-dance sequence ensues between he and Davis<\/strong>, which is truly a showstopper.\u00a0 Lest you think there are no laughs, well let me assure you there are and they are embodied in the Christmas<\/strong> sequence in the manger where baby Jesus <\/strong>is Davis <\/strong>and we hear \u201cThe Christmas Song.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 It is about here that the ensemble sings the empowering \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing,\u201d<\/strong> the official black National Anthem<\/strong> during which people who know this, stand as a sign of respect.\u00a0 There is some light at the end of the tunnel when Cole\u2019s <\/strong>manager (Bryan Dobson)<\/strong> tells him he is being considered for another show but all they needed was a sponsor.\u00a0 Cole<\/strong> takes a stand making it clear that the days of having white powder splashed on his face are over.<\/p>\n

Dul\u00e9\u2019s<\/strong> searing characterization of the painful lows of this famous singer\u2019s life is intertwined with his excellent renditions of Cole\u2019s <\/strong>iconic musical songbook.\u00a0 Between he and the rest of the company, we get to hear other familiar selections from his famous repertoire including, \u201cCaroling, Caroling,\u201d \u201cOrange Colored Sky, \u201cBlueberry Hill<\/strong>,\u201d and \u201cMe and My<\/strong> Shadow.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps after seeing McGregor\u2019s <\/strong>tightly directed production, your personal lights will be turned on.\u00a0 Maybe you will decide to become an activist to try to counter these turbulent times in which we are living and in some not so subtle ways, mirror the great Nat \u201cKing\u201d Cole\u2019s<\/strong> personal struggle with racism so many decades ago.\u00a0\u00a0 But for now, \u201cSmile,\u201d<\/strong> \u201cThe Party\u2019s Over.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
