the tannins from the tea tree turn the water to a rust-brown color &#8212; until Heine, our transplanted South African skipper\/narrator\/environmentalist, pulls back on the throttle and we begin our quiet glide up this section of the Noosa River, aptly named the \u201cRiver of Mirrors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10615\" src=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Everglades-4.jpg\" alt=\"dead tree\" width=\"850\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Everglades-4.jpg 850w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Everglades-4-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Everglades-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Everglades-4-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of only two everglades systems in the world, the other\u2019s in Florida,\u201d Heine intones over the on-board speaker system, \u201cthis waterway is the ultimate in serene tranquility.\u201d Skipper Heine adds, \u201cOver 44 percent of all of Australia`s bird species reside within this eco system, along with 1,365 species of plant life and 700 native animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10577\" src=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-5-9.jpg\" alt=\"the wetlands and footpaths through the Noosa Everglades wilderness\" width=\"850\" height=\"964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-5-9.jpg 850w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-5-9-600x680.jpg 600w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-5-9-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-5-9-768x871.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A world of water, wilderness and wonder, Heine pulls the craft alongside a wooden dock and invites us to disembark for a short stroll (500m) into the \u2018glades to get a real feel for the wetlands. Cicadas immediately come alive as we make our way down a rustic footpath, shaded by swaying palm trees and overgrown ferns, while the occasional warble can be heard overhead from one of the indigenous birds calling out to a feathered friend.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10614\" src=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-10-14rev.jpg\" alt=\"wetlands, a historic logger's camp and monitor lizard, Noosa Everglades\" width=\"850\" height=\"935\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-10-14rev.jpg 850w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-10-14rev-600x660.jpg 600w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-10-14rev-273x300.jpg 273w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-10-14rev-768x845.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back on board, our glide continues through the narrow and pristine waterways past more magnificent flora &#8212; banksias, tea trees, melaleucas, reeds and water lilies &#8212; more long-beaked birds on branches, a few canoers and kayakers and a couple of skinny dippers, who really don\u2019t seem to mind the intrusion, until we come to a full stop for morning tea at an historic logger\u2019s camp. The cookies and sweet slices of watermelon suited me just fine, followed by a stroll over to Harry\u2019s Hut, a relic from the early timber cutting days in the Everglades, saying \u201cG\u2019day\u201d along the way to a slow-moving monitor lizard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10579\" src=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-15-19.jpg\" alt=\"Noosa Evereglades wetland, Lake Cootharaba and boats on rust brown-colored water\" width=\"850\" height=\"739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-15-19.jpg 850w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-15-19-600x522.jpg 600w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-15-19-300x261.jpg 300w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-15-19-768x668.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All present and accounted for, Heine puts pedal to the metal and we race back across Lake Cootharaba until we return to Habitat Noosa just in time for lunch on the veranda at the CootharaBAR Bistro.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10580\" src=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-20.jpg\" alt=\"artisan beer at CootharaBAR Bistro\" width=\"850\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-20.jpg 850w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-20-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-20-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Noosa-Everglades-20-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the menu, succulent slices of roasted pork along with all the fixins that are sourced from local produce. And, in the glass? A \u201cpaddle\u201d of six taster-size glasses, one each for the half-dozen artisan beers brewed on site by the Eco Brewing Co. The late Steve Irwin\u2019s legacy to animal lovers everywhere: The Australia Zoo, where we\u2019ll hang out with \u2018roos and wallabies and have a stare down with a wide-eyed, ring-tailed lemur.
