Hollywood stars of stage and screen including, Dyan Canon, Elliot Gould, Richard<\/strong> Benjamin<\/strong> and Paula Prentiss, Joely Fisher, Sharon Gless,<\/strong> and Frances Farmer<\/strong>, all turned out for the Los Angeles<\/strong> premiere of Ren\u00e9e<\/strong> Taylor’s My Life on a Diet<\/em><\/strong>, <\/em>an award-winning one-woman autobiographical theatrical piece written by she and her late husband Joe Bologna, <\/strong>who also directed.\u00a0 Together for 52<\/strong> years, they were a dynamic team, writing and performing in 22 <\/strong>plays, nine television shows, and four films including,\u00a0Lovers and Other Strangers, It Had to Be You<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em> and Made for Each Other.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Performed on Harry Feiner\u2018s<\/strong> simple, but elegant drawing room set, enhanced by a colorful light design, and wearing Pol’ Atteu<\/strong> sparkling gold gown, when Ms. Taylor<\/strong> made her entrance, the loving audience broke out into thunderous applause.\u00a0 Taking it all in, and in her so familiar, thick Bronx<\/strong> accent, she smiled, and with impeccable comic timing, said, \u201cThank you and good night,\u201d\u00a0a preview of the merriment that would follow throughout the 90-<\/strong>minute evening.<\/p>\n

Seated in a comfortable but elegant easy chair, Ms. Taylor<\/strong> walked us back in time, beginning with her childhood and took us through the ensuing decades.\u00a0 The text was illustrated by Michael Redman\u2019s<\/strong> playful projection design depicting the fluctuating weight with which she has been dealing her entire life.\u00a0 Mirroring an AA <\/strong>phrase, at one point she announces, \u201cMy name is Ren\u00e9e<\/strong> and I\u2019m a diet tramp.\u201d\u00a0 She shares \u201cI have tried every diet,\u201d and throughout this entertaining evening, a variety of failed diets are flashed on the screen, some of which included, Dr. Robert<\/strong> Linn\u2019s \u201cLast Chance Diet,\u201d<\/strong> about which she casually mentioned that one of his patients died.\u00a0 She tried the popular Dr. <\/strong>Herman Tarnower<\/strong> \u201cScarsdale<\/strong> Diet,\u201d<\/strong> Lou Costello\u2019s<\/strong> \u201c18 Meatballs a Day\u201d<\/strong> and took a shot at the \u201cOkinawa Sea Food Diet.\u201d <\/strong>Her only comment on the \u201cNo<\/strong> Food, No Water\u201d<\/strong> plan was that you had to breathe through your nose.\u00a0 As for her always-slender husband, Ms. Taylor<\/strong> said Joe<\/strong> didn\u2019t mind the fluctuations in weight.\u00a0 \u201cAs long as we could keep dancing,\u201d adding,\u201d \u201cJust don\u2019t get so heavy I can\u2019t dip you!\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to her litany of varying unsuccessful diets, this famous comedienne shared some of her experiences with some of the stars of yesterday, boasting about the time she sat next to Cary Grant.<\/strong>\u00a0 In her amusing journey back in time, Ms. Taylor<\/strong> reminisces about her studies at the famous Actor\u2019s Studio<\/strong>, under the tight rule of Lee Strasberg,<\/strong> Father<\/strong> of \u201cThe Method\u201d<\/strong> style of acting.\u00a0\u00a0 He once said to her, \u201cYour problem, young lady is inhibitions \u2013 you don\u2019t have any!\u201d\u00a0 She remembers trying to flirt with Marlon Brando<\/strong> who said, \u201cGirl, you have to leave me alone.\u201d While studying at The Studio,<\/strong> she formed a warm friendship with Marilyn Monroe<\/strong> who she worshipped. Her friend suggested that she try the \u201cGrape Diet\u201d<\/strong> but she ate so many, she actually gained weight. She and Marilyn<\/strong> were in the same class together and in one of the more tender moments, she recalls saying to the blond bombshell \u201cMarilyn<\/strong>, I want to be you when I grow up,\u201d to which this famous movie star replied, \u201cWhen you become me, tell me what it\u2019s like,\u201d reflecting the deeply troubled and confusing opinion of herself.<\/p>\n

Then there was the time she auditioned for a role in one of Tennessee Williams\u2019<\/strong> plays.\u00a0 After she read her lines in the best southern drawl she could muster, he turned to her and asked, \u201cWhat part of New York<\/strong> are you from?\u201d\u00a0 You know that old saw, \u201cYou can take the girl out of the Bronx,<\/strong> but you can\u2019t take the Bronx <\/strong>out of the girl.\u201d\u00a0 That delightful accent led her to star in many shows, including playing the role of Fran Dreschler\u2019s<\/strong> mother in \u201cThe Nanny. \u201d <\/strong>Throughout the evening, interspersed with her funny stories, supporting visuals depicted scenes from her professional life including clips from her 23 <\/strong>appearances on the \u201cJack Paar Tonight Show,\u201d<\/strong> as well as guest gigs on \u2018The Perry Como Show,\u201d<\/strong> and a shot of her and Jerry Lewis<\/strong> with whom she co-starred in The Errand Boy.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 Her career path led her to encounter some of the most famous personalities of the day from Jimmy Durante<\/strong> and Elizabeth Taylor<\/strong> to Orson Welles, Joan Crawford,<\/strong> and Elaine May,<\/strong> and later on to Barbra Streisand,<\/strong> who also gave her diet advice.\u00a0 Musing about her dating experiences, she said, \u201cI dated a lot of men.\u00a0 I felt there was safety in numbers.\u00a0 In remembering Joe,<\/strong> she tells the story of how they met and how she was immediately attracted to him.\u00a0 He warned her that he basically liked to play the field and because she came on so strong on the first date, he didn\u2019t call her again for a while.\u00a0 But, as history would prove, he couldn\u2019t get her out of his mind.\u00a0 He finally called her saying that he would give being monogamous a shot.\u00a0 Six months later they were married and with the high attrition rate of so many show business marriages, they defied that \u201ctradition,\u201d and were together until his death August 13, 2017.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ms. Taylor<\/strong> reminisces that when she and Joe<\/strong> decided to write this one-woman show, she had a conversation with Nora Ephron,<\/strong> who wrote the hit show, Love, Loss and What I Wore.\u00a0 <\/em>Ren\u00e9e<\/strong> thought she\u2019d do a riff on that and name her show, Love, Loss, and What I Ate,<\/em><\/strong> but My Life on a Diet<\/em><\/strong> is what emerged.\u00a0 Ending on a humorous note, she quips about her latest diet adventure, which is Vegan<\/strong>, but admits, \u201cOnce in a while, I need a steak.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ren\u00e9e<\/strong> Taylor<\/strong> shared both her public and private lives with a grateful audience who laughed and laughed as well as shedding an occasional tear when she shared a poignant memory. The sad thing is because of such a short run, by the time you read this review, she will have been on her way to the next performance stop. But be of good cheer as since the superbly written My Life on a Diet<\/em><\/strong> was completely sold out, there\u2019s a chance in will come back again, so don\u2019t be disappointed that you missed it this time.\u00a0 Also, the show is embarked on a national tour so it might wind up at one of your local theatres, so watch for it.<\/p>\n
