Bangers and Mash <\/strong>is a traditional English<\/a> dish made of mashed potatoes<\/a> and sausages<\/a>, generally prepared with\u00a0flavored pork sausage. The dish is sometimes served with rich onion<\/a> gravy<\/a> and fried onions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The term “Bangers” is attributed to the fact that the sausages, particularly the kind made during World War II under rationing, contained a lot of water and would explode in the pan under high heat. Fortunately, the\u00a0modern\u00a0bangers do not have this attribute.<\/p>\n

Britain has\u00a0had\u00a0a long love affair with sausages, with 5 million\u00a0eaten every day. Bangers and Mash\u00a0has a strong\u00a0iconic significance as a traditional British<\/a> working-class<\/a> dish. A Cary Grant biographer once said that it was Cary\u2019s favorite dish. British soldiers were known to boil them in their helmets when on the front lines.<\/p>\n

The dish,\u00a0even when cooked at home, is an example of pub grub<\/a> \u2014 quick and easy to make in large quantities as well as being hearty and delicious.<\/p>\n

Here’s a Bangers and Mash recipe, provided courtesy of Keith Richards. Yes, Keith Richards.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. First off, find a butcher who makes his sausages fresh<\/em>.<\/li>\n
  2. Fry up the mixture of onions and bacon and seasoning.<\/li>\n
  3. Get the spuds on the boil with a dash of vinegar, some chopped onions and salt to taste. Chuck in some peas with the spuds, (Throw in some chopped carrots, too, if you like.) Now we\u2019re talking.<\/li>\n
  4. Now, you have a choice of grilling or boiling your bangers or frying. Throw them on low heat with the simmering bacon and onions (or in the cold pan, as a TV lady once said, and add the onions and\u00a0 bacon in a bit) and let the fuckers rock gently, turning every few minutes.<\/li>\n
  5. Mash yer spuds and whatever.<\/li>\n
  6. Bangers are now fat free (as possible).<\/li>\n
  7. Gravy if desired.<\/li>\n
  8. HP sauce, every man to his own.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
