In Part 1,<\/strong> Tim Disney\u2019s<\/strong> \u201croyal\u201d lineage was laid out.\u00a0 To recap, he is the son of Roy Edward Disney<\/strong>, grandson of Roy O <\/strong>and Edna <\/strong>and great-nephew of Walt<\/strong> and Lillian.<\/strong>\u00a0 In the family tradition, he has produced documentaries on the environment as well as directing and writing independent narrative films. \u00a0We spoke at length about his latest film William,<\/em><\/strong>which could be categorized as a sci-fi family drama about two scientists who decide to create a Neanderthal <\/strong>child by extracting DNA<\/strong> from a 35,000<\/strong> year-old preserved specimen.\u00a0 The story covers the development of William<\/strong> from infancy through adulthood and stars Will Brittain<\/strong> in the key role.\u00a0 The cast includes, Maria<\/strong> Dizzia, Walled Zuaiter, Susan Park,<\/strong> Callum Airlie, Beth Grant<\/strong>, and Paul Guilfoyle.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 The following exclusive interview has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Why do you like directing?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tim:\u00a0 When I\u2019m directing I can\u2019t think about anything else.\u00a0 I find it a relief to be completely occupied with one thing because then I can\u2019t think about myself.\u00a0 It\u2019s fun.\u00a0 It\u2019s the most stimulating, challenging, exciting thing.\u00a0 I\u2019m so blessed that I get the opportunity to direct from time to time.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

How did working at the Disney studio influence your filmmaking?\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tim:\u00a0 I got a chance to work in the animation department as a young person, which had a big effect on me.\u00a0 What you learn from that is how to tell stories without words.\u00a0 It\u2019s always better to tell a story without words if you possibly can.\u00a0 It\u2019s like writing without adjectives.\u00a0 You have to really distill the story to its essence, always striving to create a scene where nobody sells anything.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Getting back to the film for a moment.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of a cliffhanger.\u00a0 Are we going to get \u201c William\u201d 2?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tim:\u00a0 Spoiler alert.\u00a0 I have no comment.\u00a0 (Laughs)<\/em><\/strong>That said, now that I\u2019ve finished this film, I really want to make another one.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been re-infected.\u00a0 (Laughs)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

You chose to be an independent filmmaker.\u00a0 Why no studios?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tim:\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying I would never work with a studio, it just has never worked out that way.\u00a0 Also, I\u2019ve always pursued other businesses and so I never made a full-time profession out of moving making. Maybe I should have or maybe I never could have.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really know.\u00a0 It\u2019s just how it\u2019s worked out.\u00a0 It takes a couple of years to make a movie so you have to make sure it\u2019s something you really feel strongly about.\u00a0 The last seven or eight years I focused a huge amount of my time working on arts and arts education programs. It been very rewarding and I\u2019ve met some wonderful people along the way.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The name Disney.\u00a0 What\u2019s the upside and what\u2019s the downside?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tim:\u00a0 It\u2019s such a global brand name.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the most recognizable names on earth.\u00a0 It would be like being name Tim Coca Cola.<\/strong>\u00a0 I got to be exposed to amazing things and got to meet really interesting people and I\u2019m grateful for all of that.\u00a0 I guess the negative is not being anonymous.\u00a0 I can\u2019t use my credit card without someone asking me about what\u2019s it like being a Disney.<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a little intrusive at times.\u00a0 I respect that people are interested. Most of the feedback I get is positive.\u00a0 People share their memories about movies they saw or trips to Disneyland.<\/strong> I do my best to honor that for them.\u00a0 I would never say \u201cquit bugging me. I don\u2019t care about your happy memories.\u201d\u00a0 That would be rude.\u00a0 My dad said to me one time that you have a name you can be proud of rather than to be ashamed of.<\/p>\r\n\r\n

What was like growing up as a young Disney?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tim:\u00a0 Like any kid, you just live in the world that you were born into. It was normal to me.\u00a0 The Disney <\/strong>family were mid-western people.\u00a0 My grandfather Roy <\/strong>and his brother Walt <\/strong>were essentially covered wagon people.\u00a0 Roy<\/strong> died when I was very young, but I have very early childhood but hazy memories of him.\u00a0\u00a0 My grandparents were big figures in our lives.\u00a0 They were straightforward, direct, honest, loving, kind, decent, people.\u00a0 I still run into people these many years later who knew them or interacted with them and speak so highly of my grandparents. That\u2019s a beautiful legacy.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

How is the Disney brand different from the days when it was family-owned and run?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tim:\u00a0 Disney<\/strong> now is an enormous corporation.\u00a0 Walt <\/strong>could never have imagined what it would become.\u00a0 It is no longer a family company.\u00a0 I have the name and I think that entitles me to a cranky opinion and nothing else.\u00a0 In terms of shareholders, it\u2019s widely held and is too big for any individual to have complete control.\u00a0 I have immense respect for Bob Eiger<\/strong> and the job he\u2019s done running the company.\u00a0 He\u2019s a good person and he understands the importance of maintaining the brand as a trusted name that stands for something real and trustworthy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

What about your personal life?\u00a0 Do you have time to date or are you in a relationship?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Tim: I\u2019m a single dad.\u00a0 I have three kids – 23,18 and 7.\u00a0 Two of them are boys and I know about boys.\u00a0 And, I have a little girl.\u00a0 They split their time between me and their fantastic mom.\u00a0 My daughter has really changed my life.\u00a0 Having a kid later in life is really a good thing. \u00a0Sometimes I see my contemporaries who are able to travel.\u00a0 I can\u2019t really do that.\u00a0 What would I do if I had more time?\u00a0 Surf the internet?\u00a0 There isn\u2019t anything I\u2019d rather do with my time than to be with my daughter.\u00a0 I\u2019m old enough now to savor her more and I\u2019m more patient than I used to be.\u00a0 In the past, putting kids to bed was like being taken hostage.\u00a0 My older one wouldn\u2019t let me leave the bed until he was asleep and would feel me if I tried to get up.\u00a0 Now, as long as it takes for her to fall asleep is all good.\u00a0 When I was younger, I was in a hurry.\u00a0 Not now.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
