Ron Howard<\/strong> was born into a show biz family making his acting debut at the ripe old age of 18 <\/strong>months. He made his screen debut at when he turned four <\/strong>and has spent his entire life in Hollywood<\/strong> with his breakout role as Opie Taylor<\/strong> on the \u201cThe Andy Griffith Show\u201d<\/strong> shining a national spotlight on this adorable little kid from Duncan, Oklahoma.<\/strong>\u00a0 As he grew up, he transitioned into playing teenagers on such television series as \u201cHappy Days,\u201d \u201cThe Fonz and the Happy Days Gang,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cLaverne & Shirley,\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cLove, American Style.\u201d<\/strong> He had co-starring roles in movies made for television as well as a part in the iconic coming-of-age film \u201c<\/strong>American Graffiti.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over the course of his amazing career, Ron<\/strong> has won 39 <\/strong>awards which include, two Academy Awards<\/strong>, (\u201cA Beautiful Mind,\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and \u201cApollo 13\u201d)<\/em><\/strong> four Emmys,<\/strong> a Grammy,<\/strong> two Golden Globes<\/strong> and was nominated for seven BAFTA Awards <\/strong>and was a recipient of the National Medal of Arts<\/strong> in 2001<\/strong>. He was honored twice by receiving two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame<\/strong> for his contributions to the television and motion picture industries.<\/p>\n

There are too many films to list but some of the most memorable include, \u201cCocoon,\u201d \u201cSplash,\u201d<\/strong> \u201cParenthood,\u201d \u201cCinderella Man,\u201d Rush<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cBackdraft,\u201d<\/strong> \u201cThe Da Vinci Code,\u201d<\/strong> \u201cAngels & Demons,\u201d <\/strong>and \u201cFrost\/Nixon.\u201d<\/strong> Ron is a national treasure with a reputation of being one of the nicest people in Hollywood,<\/strong> which is attested to by the famous actors with whom he has worked including, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell, Gary Sinise<\/strong>, Daryl Hannah, Robert Duvall, Steve Martin, Michael Keaton, Kevin Bacon<\/strong>, Ed Harris, Ewan McGregor, Henry Winkler,<\/strong> and Bill Paxton.<\/strong>\u00a0 Ron<\/strong> is married to Cheryl Howard<\/strong> and they have four children:\u00a0 Bryce Dallas,<\/strong> twins Jocelyn Carlyle<\/strong> and Paige,<\/strong> and their son Reed Cross.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Recap:<\/strong>\u00a0 In Part 1<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Ron<\/strong> discussed the making of \u201cPavarotti.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 His goal was to illuminate the life and times of the world\u2019s most famous tenor.\u00a0 The documentary includes interviews with Pavarotti\u2019s <\/strong>family as well as rare archival footage. \u00a0The film is CBS Films Polygram Entertainment Brian Grazer<\/strong> presentation, an Imagine Entertainment and White Horse Pictures<\/strong> production, and is scheduled to open in select cities on June 7.<\/p>\n

Following is Part 2<\/strong> of my exclusive interview with Ron Howard<\/strong>, which has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.<\/p>\n

There is a thru line to your films, which are character-driven with a deep sensitivity to the human condition.\u00a0 Why is that your preference?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ron: I always think about character-driven stories.\u00a0 As a fan, those are the stories that reach me the most deeply.\u00a0 I can appreciate a good action movie or a fantasy that isn\u2019t character driven and some of them are great.\u00a0 But the movies and television shows that resonate with me are the ones where the characters are tested in ways that I find fascinating or I relate to or I feel I learned something through observing their journey \u2013 whether it\u2019s fiction or based on real events.<\/p>\n

A lot of young actors don\u2019t make a healthy transition.\u00a0 Some become drug addicts, some commit suicide.\u00a0 Obviously, you never fell prey to some of the pitfalls of early success and the inherent financial rewards.\u00a0 Another transition was when you decided you wanted to direct.\u00a0 How was that received by the industry?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ron:\u00a0 That was another time and there were access limitations.\u00a0 There was no cable, there were just three television channels and no independent stations, there was no Sundance, or independent film markets so it was a much more closed industry.\u00a0\u00a0 Generally, people were pretty patronizing when I would say that I wanted to direct.\u00a0 They\u2019d say how cute and someday I\u2019m sure you will.\u00a0 I was just chafing to do it now.\u00a0 My dream was to direct a movie while I was still a teenager which I didn\u2019t achieve, but my first film rolled the day after my 23rd birthday so I didn\u2019t miss it by too much.<\/p>\n

What grabs you when you\u2019re reading a script?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ron:\u00a0 Usually it\u2019s a surprise.\u00a0 There\u2019s something fresh about the setting and I like the way the characters are behaving within that setting and I feel like the script is offering the audience something fresh.<\/p>\n

How do you set up your scenes with your actors?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ron:\u00a0 Through rehearsals and conversations, I try to understand what makes them tick as artists and I try to create an environment, which will allow them to excel.\u00a0 I make known aspects of the scene that I think are important.\u00a0 Some actors really want to talk about their characters and delve into it while others are very self-sufficient and lose something if they over articulate it or over analyze it.\u00a0 As a director, I like to feel that I adapt my approach to what I think will allow the actor to really soar.<\/p>\n

When you\u2019re working with a narrative script, do you allow for improvisations or changes to the script as you\u2019re shooting<\/em><\/strong>?<\/em><\/p>\n

Ron:\u00a0 It depends a little bit on the nature of it.\u00a0 If I think the actor or actress has a gift, I\u2019m definitely more inclined to try to open up some time in the schedule to let them improvise.\u00a0\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t think it, but the movie \u201cCocoon\u201d had a lot of improvisation in it.\u00a0 Other movies like \u201cParenthood\u201d were very loose and very realistic and had very little improv.\u00a0 It was tightly scripted and worked.\u00a0 Even \u201cArrested Development\u201d was initially supposed to have a lot of improvisation, but the scripts were so tight that while the actors might riff a little bit here and there, they just stuck with Mitch\u2019s writing (Mitchell Hurwitz).<\/em>\u00a0 It gets down to how are we using our resources for the best effect.\u00a0 Is it through improv or is it executing the script as written?<\/p>\n

In a given week or a month, how many scripts land on your desk?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ron:\u00a0 Well, it depends on whether or not I\u2019m shooting.\u00a0 I\u2019m getting ready to direct a scripted project from Netflix called \u201cHillbilly Elegy,\u201d which will be starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams.\u00a0 During the nine weeks of shooting in Georgia and Ohio, I doubt that I\u2019ll be reading any scripts.\u00a0 When I\u2019m just being co-chairman of Imagine Entertainment, I will read two or three scripts a week.<\/p>\n
