What can you say about Anne Frank,<\/strong>\u00a0 one of the most famous people of the last century, that hasn\u2019t already been said? Her diary, \u201cThe Diary of Anne Frank,\u201d<\/strong> contains the ruminations of a young German Jewish<\/strong> girl who went into hiding in Amsterdam<\/strong> in 1944<\/strong> with her family and friends desperate to escape the Nazi <\/strong>slaughter of Jews.<\/strong>\u00a0 Living in cramped quarters for two years, this energetic young lady kept her sanity by writing to \u201cDear Kitty\u201d<\/strong> in her diary every day, recording her hopes, fears, dreams, philosophy, and even her optimistic outlook, as well notes on the dawning of her sexual awakening.\u00a0 As recorded history has shown us,\u00a0 the Nazis<\/strong> eventually found the hiding place and everyone was arrested and carted off to concentration camps where Anne<\/strong> and her sister Margo<\/strong> died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen<\/strong> camp just several weeks before the allies liberated the camps. Her father Otto Frank,<\/strong> the only surviving member of the family, posthumously published his daughter\u2019s\u00a0 <\/strong>incisive wit, witticisms, and observations contained in her diary in 1947.<\/strong><\/p>\n

First printed in Dutch<\/strong>, and subsequently translated into 67<\/strong> languages, this slim book has sold over 31 <\/strong>million copies.\u00a0 A\u00a0 play, based on Anne\u2019s <\/strong>diary, made its Broadway <\/strong>debut in October <\/strong>1955<\/strong> and ran for 717<\/strong> performances, winning a Pulitzer Prize.<\/strong>\u00a0 Subsequently, it was made into a film directed by George Stevens,<\/strong> winning three Academy Awards<\/strong>, including the Best<\/strong> Supporting Actress<\/strong> nod going to Shelley Winters,<\/strong> who donated her Oscar<\/strong> to the Anne Frank Museum.<\/strong>\u00a0 The film is listed as eighteenth in AFI\u2019s Top100<\/strong> of the most inspiring American films.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, I\u2019ll pose that question again: What can you say about Anne Frank<\/strong> that hasn\u2019t already been said?\u00a0 In an attempt to alter the famous narrative, \u201cAnne,\u201d<\/strong> currently on stage at the Museum of Tolerance\u2019s Pelz Theatre<\/strong>, is a fantasized interpretation written by Jessica Durlacher<\/strong> and Leon de Winter<\/strong>, based on Frank\u2019s The Diary of a<\/em><\/strong> Young Girl<\/strong><\/em> adapted by Nick Blaemire.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0 Directed by Eve Brandstein,<\/strong> in this version, Anne (Ava Lalezarzadeh<\/em>)<\/strong> survives the concentration camp and is now a young lady in her twenties determined to get her story published.\u00a0 She meets with a publisher (Timothy P. Brown)<\/em><\/strong> who is interested in her experience. With the ensuing action sticking very closely to the original text as penned by Anne<\/strong>, he silently observes the events unfolding on stage replicating the life and times as experienced by the people co-existing in that infamous hiding place.<\/p>\n

The ensemble does a creditable acting job in bringing these characters to life.\u00a0 The cast consists of Rob Brownstein<\/strong> as Anne\u2019s dad Otto<\/strong>,\u00a0 Andrea Gwynnel<\/strong> as Edith Frank, Marnina Schon<\/strong> as Margot Frank<\/strong>, Aylam Orian<\/strong> as Herman <\/strong>van Pels,<\/strong> and Mary Gordon Murray<\/strong> as Mrs.<\/strong> van Pels<\/strong> and Miep<\/strong>, the good Samaritan<\/strong> who provides the group with food and hope.\u00a0 Tony DeCarlo<\/strong> also plays multiple roles, with Kevin Matsumoto<\/strong> playing Peter van Pels<\/strong>, the young boy with whom Anne <\/strong>falls in love. Technically, given the limited space and production budget, Desma <\/strong>does a good job with her set design depicting the Frank <\/strong>family home in Amsterdam <\/strong>and the Annex <\/strong>hiding place where the inhabitants try to live some semblance of a normal life.\u00a0 Other production values consist of Lighting Design by Ian James, Derek<\/strong> Christiansen\u2019s Projection<\/strong> & Sound Design,<\/strong> and Florence Kemper Bunzel\u2019s<\/strong> Costume Design.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This June,<\/strong> Anne Frank<\/strong> would have celebrated her 90t<\/sup><\/strong>h<\/sup> birthday.\u00a0 Just think what the world would have benefited from her talent had she survived.\u00a0 Just think also about what 6,000,000<\/strong> murdered Jews<\/strong> could have contributed to humanity.\u00a0 With the world Jewish<\/strong> population at around 13.3<\/strong> million, almost close to half live are divided between America<\/strong> and Israel,<\/strong> which has become a world leader in such fields as science, technology, medicine, chemistry, physics, agriculture, and water conservation.*<\/p>\n

Today, the powerful \u201cNever Again\u201d <\/strong>battle cry has tiny cracks in it given the escalation of anti-Semitic <\/strong>acts being committed around the world and at home, sprouting from the explosive, divisive political climate permeating our country.\u00a0\u00a0 We need not look any further than \u201cThe Diary of Anne Frank\u201d<\/strong> to be reminded of the potential catastrophic consequences of singling out a group of people and making them \u201cthe enemy of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
