Julianne\u2019s<\/strong> latest film is After the Wedding<\/em><\/strong> in which she plays Theresa Young,<\/strong> a high-powered media mogul who has amassed millions.\u00a0 Directed by her husband Bart Freundlich,<\/strong> Michelle Williams<\/strong> co-stars as the mysterious Isabel,<\/strong> who runs an orphanage in a poor section of Calcutta.<\/strong>\u00a0 Billy Crudup<\/strong> plays Oscar,<\/strong> Theresa\u2019s <\/strong>husband, and Abby Quinn<\/strong> plays their daughter Grace,<\/strong> who has two younger twin siblings.<\/p>\n

Bart, Julianne,<\/strong> and Abby Quinn*<\/strong> recently sat down with a select group of journalists to talk about their film and other topics and the following interview has been edited for content and continuity for print purposes.<\/p>\n

Danish<\/em><\/strong> filmmaker Susanne Bier\u2019s<\/strong> Academy Award<\/strong> nominated film \u2014\u00a0featured the two main characters as men.\u00a0 Why did you change those characters to women? <\/em><\/p>\n

Bart:\u00a0 Susanne Bier\u2019s<\/strong> and Anders Thomas Jensen\u2019s<\/strong> film was so complex emotionally that I didn\u2019t see any reason to remake it in English. <\/strong>\u00a0So, it needed some kind of reinvention.\u00a0 When Julie <\/strong>saw the movie, she was really drawn to the role of Theresa <\/strong>and expressed interest in that role.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it was a real thought that we were actually going to change the genders.<\/p>\n

How did the change actually take place?<\/em><\/p>\n

Bart:\u00a0 During discussions with the producers, I talked about how we would give the story a new life. They said that we should try to reinvent it with the lead characters as two women instead of men. Because I knew the plot so well, I was confident that it would not be a major stumbling block. I struggle talking about this because I don\u2019t want to give away too much away, so I rely on all of you to figure it out. (Laughter)<\/em><\/strong> But obviously the challenge was going to be if you\u2019re a woman and have a baby, you\u2019re going to know. One of the male characters in the original screenplay was ignorant about the existence of the baby. The thing that became the ultimate stumbling block became the thing that helped me reinvent the story.<\/p>\n

How did you approach the new concept?<\/em><\/p>\n

Bart:\u00a0 I researched people who had been given up as babies and were adopted by a different family asking them how they felt about that.\u00a0 It gave me a whole new world to explore and it felt really exciting to have two women at the heart of the movie \u2014\u00a0both of them very strong characters with totally different life philosophies and both of them convinced that their philosophy of the world is the right one. \u00a0I loved that contrast and having Julie<\/strong> and Michelle<\/strong> play those roles.<\/p>\n

Julie:\u00a0 We all had to make a considered decision.\u00a0 Every adult in this film knows about the decision and kept it a secret.\u00a0 That deliberateness really heightened the drama tremendously.\u00a0It\u2019s like people make the best decision they can at the time and later oftentimes have regrets.<\/p>\n

Your character is very strong and successful.\u00a0 Did you base her on someone you know?<\/em><\/p>\n

Julie:\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen examples of women who have big lives \u2014\u00a0who have successful careers and also have families they are dedicated to, and what it takes to achieve that. I\u2019m always impressed by how much they are able to accomplish. Many roles for women are paper-thin where you are that horrible person who hires you.\u00a0 It\u2019s nice to see a woman in a powerful position who is not represented as an evil boss lady.<\/p>\n

Did you guide the actors in the development of their characters and did you take input from them? <\/em><\/p>\n

Bart:\u00a0 I thought a lot about the story line and the characters, but the actors did their own work in becoming those people. You try to listen to them because they\u2019re usually right.<\/p>\n

What did you use in your acting toolbox in that emotional scene between you and your husband?<\/em><\/p>\n

Julie:\u00a0 A lot of water.\u00a0 (Laughter)<\/em><\/strong> My character doesn\u2019t reveal that she\u2019s sick to anybody so when you get to that moment, that\u2019s truly a very private moment and the only person who will see her that way is her husband.\u00a0 Despite all her pent-up tension, you\u2019ve never seen her crack, and then you see her implode.<\/p>\n

Bart:\u00a0 I feel why her character was so important was that she was doing all the things she had to do so set up everyone\u2019s life as a way to keep moving forward. And, after all was said and the secrets were finally out, there was no more to do. And, I loved it because she\u2019s not just sad \u2013 she\u2019s furious because she\u2019s someone who\u2019s so capable and yet there\u2019s nothing she can do to change the impending outcome.<\/p>\n
