Courtesy of Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>Webb\u2019s <\/em><\/strong><em>latest film is <strong>\u201cThe Only Living Boy in New York.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 Written by <strong>Allan Loeb<\/strong> and skillfully directed by <strong>Webb<\/strong>, the film is the poignant story of a young man trying to find his place in the world and the surprising events he encounters along the way. Courtesy of Amazon Studios and Roadside.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 In the original draft, <strong>Thomas<\/strong> gets back together with <strong>Mimi<\/strong> and I thought that was wrong.\u00a0 I thought the idea of the movie was that life becomes more complicated, not less complicated and I thought to tie up the movie that way felt somewhat false to me.\u00a0 <strong>Mimi\u2019s<\/strong> character wants to go to <a href=\"http:\/\/travelingboy.com\/archive-travel-bev-croatia1.html\"><strong>Croatia<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 For a character of her age to give that up and stay with the boy felt wrong to me.\u00a0 I felt if she wants to go she should go and have her own adventure; otherwise it would feel like she was servicing <strong>Thomas,<\/strong> which I didn\u2019t think was appropriate.\u00a0 So that changed.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding why the <strong>Johanna <\/strong>character <strong><em>(Kate Beckinsale)<\/em><\/strong> did what she did, the key to that was that she really loves <strong>Ethan<\/strong>, but he\u2019s been kind of wishy washy about their relationship.\u00a0 When he did commit, that posed more problems than she had anticipated and her behavior kind of rattles the whole house.\u00a0 So that was changed.\u00a0 Another element was adding the voiceover.\u00a0 We wanted to employ a literary device that seemed organic to the film.\u00a0 Then there was the wedding toast, which we added in as kind of a central set piece that helped to point out all the relationships that were deteriorating and all the relationships that were being born.\u00a0 I think that was the central crux of the movie.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1665\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1665\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1665\" src=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pierce-Brosnan-with-Kate-Beckinsale.jpg\" alt=\"Pierce Brosnan as Ethan with his girlfriend Kate Beckinsale in a scene from 'The Only Living Boy in New York'\" width=\"850\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pierce-Brosnan-with-Kate-Beckinsale.jpg 850w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pierce-Brosnan-with-Kate-Beckinsale-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pierce-Brosnan-with-Kate-Beckinsale-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Pierce-Brosnan-with-Kate-Beckinsale-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pierce Brosnan as Ethan with his girlfriend Kate Beckinsale. Courtesy of Amazon Studios and Roadside.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 He was in a movie called <strong>\u201cTramps,\u201d<\/strong> which was shown in <strong>Toronto<\/strong> and then went on to <strong>Netflix.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 He was also in another movie called <strong>\u201cGreenberg.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 We actually auditioned a lot of kids and tried to find somebody with a nascent masculinity wherein you could imagine him pursuing someone like <strong>Johanna,<\/strong> but also being put on his heels by someone like <strong>Mimi<\/strong>.\u00a0 There\u2019s a very narrow period of time where a young actor can play that.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>There was no trace of his English accent.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 Yeah. Courtesy of Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>When did Jeff and Pierce become attached?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 <strong>Jeff<\/strong> came on fairly early.\u00a0 He was interested in the film a year ago but we didn\u2019t have the financing together.\u00a0\u00a0 Once we could go out with him attached, then it become more official. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>He also has the same agent as <strong>Pierce<\/strong> and we went immediately to him.\u00a0 He was so perfect for the part, which called for someone who was both sophisticated and deeply charismatic and really wonderful looking.\u00a0 It\u2019s a tricky intersection and he played it perfectly.\u00a0 You don\u2019t see him rage very much.\u00a0 You think of him as being cool as a cucumber, but he really has more of a range as an actor and I liked to see him explode.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Was there one scene that was particularly problematic?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we reshot any scenes but we did cut some scenes.\u00a0\u00a0 There was a scene between <strong>Mimi<\/strong> and <strong>Johanna<\/strong> in the bathroom and we ended up cutting it because it started to feel a little bit arch, but the movie is pretty precise.\u00a0 We tried to be very careful about making it as efficient as possible.\u00a0 Given the level of privilege with these people, we didn\u2019t want to indulge ourselves too much so we tried to make it as quick and swift as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Was there one scene that was fun to shoot?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 We had a great time doing the wedding scene.\u00a0 The toast was great.\u00a0 The guests\u2019 responding to that gave us a big laugh.\u00a0 That was really tricky but it was also a lot of fun.\u00a0 I loved what <strong>Uncle Buster<\/strong> was saying.\u00a0 It starts off like this is going to be a disaster and then he stumbles onto something beautiful, tender, and compassionate.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably one of my favorite parts of the movie.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>What was your goal in how you depicted New York?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 It looks like a postcard, but it\u2019s not a realistic depiction of <strong>New York.<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s sort of a timeless version of it.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about social media; it\u2019s not about \u201cnow.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s also not a period piece.\u00a0 It\u2019s just kind of an idealized version of <strong>New York<\/strong>.\u00a0 The clothes felt a little more romantic, a little dated, or a little classic.\u00a0 We tried to create kind of a hermetically sealed version of the city and make it into a fable without sort of identifying it as such.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You\u2019ve done a cross-section of films and music videos.\u00a0 Do you tailor your directorial approach to each project or do you have a standard method of directing?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 <strong>\u201cThe Spider-Man\u201d<\/strong> was a little more chaotic.\u00a0 There were a lot of crazy things going on and I was trying to manage many different departments and situations so it was like one day at a time.\u00a0 I think in <strong>\u201cThe Spider-Man\u201d<\/strong> I had to really think and be respectful of fans\u2019 expectations and the will of the universe as it related to that character, and the impact it would have on kids.\u00a0 You also have to be careful about violence.\u00a0 The smaller movies are more manageable.\u00a0 You can spend more time sort of pondering them. With <strong>\u201cGifted\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201cThe Only Living Boy in New York,\u201d<\/strong> the movie is the thing.\u00a0 It has the freedom to be itself in a way that is really exhilarating, which is liberating.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Who are some of the directors you admire?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 <strong>Peter Weir<\/strong> is probably my favorite director.\u00a0 I think he is an underrated master.\u00a0 He made movies that were incredibly artful and very well crafted.\u00a0 I really admired how careful they were and how unself-conscious they were.\u00a0 I know now that I\u2019m reacting to things I saw when I was younger. I saw <strong>\u201cDead Poets Society\u201d<\/strong> when I was in the eighth grade.\u00a0 The care he took with the sound was so beautiful and helped create a world that completely enveloped me.\u00a0 I really admire that level of detail and commitment to finessing things. I just think he\u2019s a great director.\u00a0 <strong>Hitchcock<\/strong> is fun and such a master of visual story telling.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to not be deeply influenced by his work and to learn things from what he\u2019s done.\u00a0 It\u2019s really quite incredible how consistently impressive and innovative he was. <strong>Almod\u00f3var <\/strong>always had compassion for his characters, which I value.\u00a0 There were never really any villains.\u00a0 Even people who did despicable things he created insights into their character that allowed you to understand and sympathize with them.\u00a0 Those are a few filmmakers I really admired.\u00a0 Of course I love <strong>Scorsese<\/strong> and <strong>Spielberg,<\/strong> but they didn\u2019t rattle me in the same way the other filmmakers did.\u00a0 As a director, I\u2019m always learning and trying to be better.\u00a0 The joy of filmmaking is that you can always improve.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Did you go to film school?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 I studied <strong>English<\/strong> in <strong>Colorado<\/strong> and then I went to the <strong>Tisch School<\/strong> at <strong>NYU <\/strong>for a semester.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How did you get started in film?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 I started as a youngster in <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong> as a fan watching movies and being really being moved by them and just loving them.\u00a0 I was inspired to be an architect or a poet or a fighter pilot, depending on the last movie I saw.\u00a0 I realized that I was not going to be able to do all those things unless I make movies; then maybe I could indulge myself and do everything.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Did you apprentice with anyone?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I moved to <strong>Los Angeles<\/strong> and worked as an assistant to a documentary filmmaker who taught me how to edit.\u00a0 I edited for a couple of years and then I started doing music videos and that\u2019s where I got the most experience.\u00a0 I became completely obsessive about music videos and I thought that short form was an incredibly dense and efficient way to sell stories.\u00a0 Understanding how to edit has a deep impact on how I approach a scene.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Do you live here in Los Angeles?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc:\u00a0 I lived in <strong>L.A.<\/strong> for fifteen years.\u00a0 During <strong>\u201cThe Spider-Man\u201d<\/strong> I moved to <strong>New York <\/strong>and now I go back and forth.\u00a0 I have a place there and my girlfriend is there.\u00a0 I\u2019m from <strong>Wisconsin<\/strong> and <strong>New York<\/strong> is how I imagined it to be before I ever went to New York.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1663\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1663\" src=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Marc-Webb.jpg\" alt=\"Award-winning director Marc Webb on set of 'The Only Living Boy in New York'\" width=\"850\" height=\"578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Marc-Webb.jpg 850w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Marc-Webb-600x408.jpg 600w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Marc-Webb-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Marc-Webb-768x522.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Award-winning director Marc Webb on set of &#8220;The Only Living Boy in New York.\u201d Photo credit: Niko Tavernise<br \/>Courtesy of Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><em>What\u2019s next for you?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Marc: I\u2019m going to vacation in <strong>Montana<\/strong> to visit my parents.\u00a0 They live in an old mining town where my grandfather was deputy sheriff.\u00a0 We have a bunch of family there so it\u2019s great city.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m also reading scripts and might write a bit.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>I look forward to your next project.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>*<span style=\"font-size: small;\">Computer Generated Images<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Director Marc Webb has a pretty impressive resume, which includes a portfolio of both television and film credits.
