Raoul’s 2 Cents<\/h5>\n

This week we have a rare contribution from one of my subscribers\/friends:<\/p>\n

“I dreamed it and couldn\u2019t get it out of my mind, and I swear I was inspired (which is how many of my poems come to me) so I put my dream into verse.”<\/em> — Lois McKinney<\/p>\n

I Had a Dream<\/span><\/h2>\n

(With appreciation for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)<\/em><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t think I will soon forget
\nA dream I had the other night.
\nI dreamed I was caring for six little boys.
\nThree were black and three were white.<\/p>\n

The smallest boy kept running off,
\nWith the biggest, happiest grin.
\nHe thought he and I were having a race,
\nAnd he was determined to win!<\/p>\n

I picked him up by the back of his shirt
\nAnd as he squirmed and wiggled,
\nHe became a suitcase as I carried him,
\nAnd plopped him on the grass as he giggled!<\/p>\n

Then a little black boy fell to the ground.
\nHis white playmate said \u201cYou\u2019ll be okay.
\nCome with me; I have some games
\nThat I think you and I should play.\u201d<\/p>\n

The white boy helped his new friend
\nTo sit under a nearby tree,
\nAnd then got a pail of water
\nTo wash the injured knee.<\/p>\n

The two of them talked and laughed
\nAt riddles, and silly things that rhyme.
\nIt seemed as though these two little boys
\nHad been good friends for a very long time.<\/p>\n

The other four kids found a ball
\nAnd tossed it all around.
\nThey\u2019d cheer each boy who caught the ball
\nBefore it hit the ground!<\/p>\n

Such sportsmanship warmed my heart.
\nIt made me feel so good
\nTo see that love for everyone
\nWas something these kids understood.<\/p>\n

Six little boys hadn\u2019t known each others\u2019 names \u2013
\nTimmy, Ralph, Satchel, Sam, Stu, and Wade \u2013
\nBut later that day they knew all the names
\nOf the new friends they had made.<\/p>\n

Wouldn\u2019t it be wonderful
\nIf assumptions didn\u2019t get in our way,
\nAnd we\u2019d think the way the kids did
\nOn that really special day?<\/p>\n

We\u2019d judge people by the things they do
\nAnd not by the way they look.
\nIf that could happen, all lives would matter,
\nAnd prejudice would be a closed book!<\/p>\n
