Heroes of Our America<\/i>\u00a0(1952) was a history book for fourth graders published by the Iroquois Publishing Company of\u00a0Syracuse, New York. Its co-authors were Gertrude and John Van Duyn Southworth.\u00a0John Southworth<\/a>, with Harvard and Columbia University degrees, taught at a number of schools in the\u00a0New York metropolitan area and\u00a0was president of the publishing company.\u00a0Gertrude Southworth<\/a>, his frequent co-author, was also his mother.<\/p>\n

I picked it off my office shelf after\u00a0Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0called for teaching \u201cpatriotic history\u201d in American schools as a defense against a mythical radical \u201cleft\u201d conspiracy and to ensure that \u00a0\u201cour youth will be taught to love America.\u201d\u00a0Heroes of Our America<\/em>\u00a0is an example of the kind of \u201cpatriotic history\u201d Donald and I were both exposed to as children in the 1950s.
