Co-starring Rob Riggle and Quinn Shephard, the story revolves around Katie Price (Bella Thorne), a young girl with XP,* a rare genetic disease that is deadly if she is exposed to even a drop of sunlight.\u00a0 Housebound during daylight hours, for years she has watched Charlie (<a href=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/up-close-personal-with-patrick-schwarzenegger\/\">Patrick Schwarzenegger<\/a>) skate past her window on his way to school and developed a crush on him.\u00a0 To break up the monotony of being shut in during the day, at night Katie takes her guitar to the railway station where she plays music for commuters. There are presently about 150 confirmed cases in the U.S. and\u00a0\u00a0they think of themselves as normal kids like Bella\u2019s character of Katie. XP is a one in a million condition so we wanted to be very honest in how we presented this story.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Since it is so rare, what are the symptoms and how is it diagnosed?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 The symptoms show up when kids are in the playground screaming and crying from pain following a severe sunburn, which is how they are diagnosed.\u00a0 There\u2019s not a lot of information online so we had to contact people who actually have familiarity with XP.\u00a0 As we\u2019ve begun promoting the movie, one of the websites that is an authority on XP, tweeted us and said that in the last 24 hours, they had gotten 100,00 hits.\u00a0 (<em>Audible \u201cwow.\u201d<\/em>)\u00a0 It made my day that we could help be part of awareness on some level.\u00a0 We never set out to make a documentary or a movie about a sickness, but it\u2019s great that we can help with advocacy at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>You really walked a fine line with this story as it could have denigrated into a soppy soap opera but it was anything but that.\u00a0 It is beautifully done \u2013 the directing is superb, the acting is superb, the cinematography is superb.\u00a0 That said, why did you want to tell this particular story?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 Because I love love stories and because I love romantic dramas and I feel there are actually very few romantic dramas these days.\u00a0 It\u2019s a genre that\u2019s under represented.\u00a0 You know, there are a lot of romantic comedies, and there\u2019s a lot of hybrids but if you go back to my favorite movies like \u201cWest Side Story,\u201d or \u201cLove Story,\u201d or \u201cSplendor in the Grass,\u201d or think back to some of Betty Davis\u2019 early work, there was a genre in Hollywood that was this cathartic romantic drama, and that\u2019s what we set out to make.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5861\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5861\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5861\" src=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/On-Midnight-Sun.jpg\" alt=\"director Scott Speer checking a scene with Bella Thorne and Patrick Schwarzenegger during shooting of 'Midnight Sun'\" width=\"850\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/On-Midnight-Sun.jpg 850w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/On-Midnight-Sun-600x371.jpg 600w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/On-Midnight-Sun-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/travelingboy.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/On-Midnight-Sun-768x475.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5861\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">L-R: Director Scott Speer checking a scene with Bella Thorne and Patrick Schwarzenegger during shooting of \u201cMidnight Sun.\u201d<\/span> Courtesy Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><strong>What was your reaction when you first read Eric Kirsten\u2019s script?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 I cried and then called a producer who is a friend of mine and said that I thought we could do something very classical and special and great with this movie.\u00a0 From there it was about casting \u2013 can you find the leads who can give you that classic old Hollywood chemistry?\u00a0 Can you find that kind of quality from two people? That\u2019s why we cast Patrick to co-star with Bella.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Do you think this movie will be Patrick\u2019s big break?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 I hope so.\u00a0 I hope you enjoyed him in the film.\u00a0 This is his first leading role, but he\u2019s got all the tools he needs to do whatever he wants to do \u2013 whether it\u2019s what his father did \u2013 action movies or something totally different.\u00a0 He\u2019s a very different man from his father.\u00a0 I know as humble and proud of his legacy he is, he\u2019s not trying to rely on his background for success.\u00a0\u00a0 He really wants to be his own actor and I think he has that quality of the strong, silent type.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5862\" was based?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 I know the script was based on a Japanese film of the same name.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t watch that film until after we wrapped because I wanted that movie and that filmmaker to have his movie and for us to have our movie.\u00a0 I thought that was the most respectful thing to do.\u00a0 Every movie is lightening in a bottle so trying to chase something is never the right idea.\u00a0 By the way, the Japanese film is different, but really a great movie.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What was your thinking behind not having a sex scene, which was refreshing?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 (<em>Laughs<\/em>) As a filmmaker, my foundation is fairy tales so every scene in the movie has to have a purpose and has to push our story along.\u00a0 So, if there\u2019s a sex scene that\u2019s called for, then wonderful, but just putting one in for the sake of putting one in doesn\u2019t feel right.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Nathaniel Walcott\u2019s musical score was spot on.\u00a0 How do you think music influences a character or a moment on film?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 Thank you for bringing up the music.\u00a0 I love the music in the movie.\u00a0 I use music in everything I do \u2013 whether it\u2019s movies or the work I did on MTV.\u00a0 I feel that music communicates as well or better than images and oftentimes if a character cannot articulate what they\u2019re feeling, then a song can do that for them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5865\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5865\" sings in the film?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 We had always planned to tell the story through music as well as through the narrative and began looking for Katie\u2019s sound.\u00a0 I listened to hundreds and hundreds of songs but what I was looking for was the same idea as when you\u2019re sitting around a campfire and someone has a guitar and begins to play let\u2019s say a Beyonce song or another pop song. The guitar sounds so much more enchanting and something raw.\u00a0 That was the quality I wanted for her songs.\u00a0 Once we found the music, then we dragged Bella into the studio and said that we were going to record four songs, but will only use one.\u00a0 She was terrified to record these songs.\u00a0 What you learn about her is that she\u2019s a perfectionist and if she can\u2019t do something right, she doesn\u2019t want to do it at all.\u00a0 We wound up recording ten songs five of which are in the movie and now she\u2019s doing a ton of her own music.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Were there any surprises during the shoot?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer:\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Always.\u00a0 This is filmmaking so what does go right?\u00a0 The biggest surprise for me was probably Pat and Bella\u2019s chemistry in their performance.\u00a0 We had to shoot the sailboat scene on day two of production because we had only one week of sunshine in Vancouver.\u00a0 I had to put them in the boat with drones buzzing around getting the wide shots.\u00a0 They already knew their characters so well that they could just turn on the chemistry. That was one of the greatest surprises.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Any others?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer: Another one was Rob Riggle who plays Katie\u2019s father Jack.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think anyone has ever seen dramatic scenes like this from Rob. It was a pleasure working with him. I grew up in San Diego and this might not be the sexiest answer but Punk Rock was a big deal at the time.\u00a0 At my rival high school was a bunch of local kids who called themselves \u201cBlink 182\u201d and that was my first concert.\u00a0 It felt like magic \u2013 the light, the sound, the people, the sweat on the skin.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What were some of the films that impacted you as a youngster?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer: I was a little kid growing up on Steven Spielberg\u2019s movies and crying at \u201cET,\u201d crying at \u201cThe Lion King,\u201d being scared out of my mind watching \u201cJurassic Park,\u201d and then going back and watching \u201cJaws,\u201d and being even more scared.\u00a0 (<em>Laughter<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What age range will this film appeal to and what do you think the audience take away will be?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Speer: Obviously, our core will be teenagers but I hope we can bring in everyone. I wanted to make a movie about hope.
