The 22nd<\/sup><\/strong> annual COLCOA French Film Festival,<\/strong> the largest festival of its kind dedicated to French <\/strong>cinema and television series, recently wrapped up after eight days of screenings at the Directors Guild of America<\/strong> where a smorgasbord of 86 <\/strong>films, television and digital series, and VR<\/strong> programs were offered.\u00a0 Competing for awards were 33<\/strong> features, 23<\/strong> short films, 12<\/strong> television series, four documentaries, and four digital series. (The winners are listed below.)<\/p>\n

Over 23,000<\/strong> people attended the eight-day festival, which kicked off with a fabulous opening night gala where cameras snapped, wine flowed, and invited guests feasted on foods beautifully presented by an array of French <\/strong>chefs.\u00a0 This annual cinematic journey through the works of famous and emerging directors, is a collaborative effort between the Franco-American Cultural Fund, the Directors Guild of America,<\/strong> Motion Picture Association of America, Writers Guild of America West,<\/strong> France\u2019s Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music, <\/strong>Directors<\/strong> and Producers (L\u2019ARP,)<\/strong> the Film and Television Office of the French<\/strong> Embassy <\/strong>in Los Angeles, the CNC, TV<\/strong> France International<\/strong>, and Unifrance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nina Kacew) and Pierre Niney (Romain Gary) star in Promise at Dawn, a biopic directed and co-written by Eric Barbier with Marie Eynard, based on the life of French novelist and diplomat Romain Gary who against all odds, achieved the improbable goals set of him by his unrelenting, domineering mother.<\/span> Courtesy Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The memorable opening night film was Promise at Dawn (La promesse de l\u2019aube,)<\/em><\/strong> which is based on the life of French<\/strong> novelist and diplomat Romain Gary<\/strong>.\u00a0 The film, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg <\/strong>and Pierre Niney,<\/strong> each of whom give outstanding performances as mother and son, was adapted by \u00c9ric<\/strong> Barbier<\/strong> and Marie Eynard <\/strong>from Gary\u2019s <\/strong>book, and is brilliantly directed by Barbier<\/strong>.\u00a0 The story takes us through the life and times of a man who grew up with his unrelenting Russian-Jewish<\/strong> mother in the 1920s<\/strong>.\u00a0 She filled him with seemingly impossible expectations and reminded him almost every day of her grandiose ambitions for him and even when he\u2019s lying wounded in a military hospital bed, she instructs him to keep writing his book.<\/p>\n

Naked Normandy, skillfully directed by Philippe Le Guay, features Intouchables star Fran\u00e7ois Cluzet as the mayor of a small town that has fallen on hard economic times. The festival ended with the hilarious The Other Woman<\/i>,<\/b> which stars Daniel Auteuil,<\/b> who also directed.\u00a0 Sandrine Kiberlain, Adriana Ugarte<\/b>, and the irresistible Gerard Depardieu<\/b> complete the two couples. The entertaining story illuminates what happens when a much older man leaves his wife for a gorgeous, sexy, much younger woman.\u00a0 His friend, another older, but seemingly happily married man, fantasizes multiple erotic adventures with this beguiling creature and the results are surprising.<\/p>\n

With the potpourri of exciting cinematic and television works presented in this year\u2019s COLCOA French Film Festival,<\/b> one can eagerly look forward to next year\u2019s edition, which will take place April 2019<\/b>.<\/p>\n
