In a most festive evening, an event aptly named \u201cMagical Kenya,\u201d<\/strong> a gathering took place to celebrate the inauguration of a non-stop flight from JFK<\/strong> to Nairobi.<\/strong>\u00a0 The exciting event was held in the SLS Hotel\u2019s Garden Room<\/strong>.\u00a0 Sponsored by the Kenyan Tourist<\/strong> Board,<\/strong> and hosted by the Honorable<\/strong> Najib Balala, Cabinet Secretary\u00a0 Ministry of Tourism & Wildlife<\/strong>, the venue was transformed into a visual taste of Kenya <\/strong>with giant, colorful posters decorating the walls lending a peek into what a visitor might experience.<\/p>\n

Greeted with a \u201cSundowner\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 a cocktail traditionally served at sunset on Kenyan<\/strong> safaris \u2013 an array of food was offered to the 130<\/strong> people in attendance. Guests ranged from tour operators and travel agents to a sprinkling of journalists.\u00a0 Much to the delight of attendees, the festivities began with a wonderful troupe of young dancers who performed traditional tribal dances.\u00a0 Kicking off the few speeches, which were quite informative, an entertaining Al Merschen<\/strong>, partner in Myriad<\/strong>, a company that represents Kenya Tourism, <\/strong>he asked the group, \u201cHow many of you would like to win two tickets to Nairobi<\/strong>? Of course, every hand in the room shot up after which he announced that he actually had two free tickets to Sacramento<\/strong>, which resulted in gales of laughter. He then painted a verbal description of the magical experiences that awaited visitors to Kenya<\/strong>, ranging from culture, safaris, animals, the compelling landscapes and vistas, to the beaches, the gastronomy, and most of all the friendly, warm people.\u00a0 He added, \u201cKenya<\/strong> is a place you don\u2019t go to \u201cvisit,\u201d but a place that you visit to \u201cfeel.\u201d\u00a0 Other speakers included the aforementioned Honorable CS Najib Balala<\/strong> who talked about the special bond between the United States<\/strong> and Kenya<\/strong>. Pau<\/strong>l Dehaan, Sales Manager of Kenya Airways,<\/strong> gave a brief presentation about the new flight, scheduled to launch in a month, with fares beginning at $700.<\/strong>\u00a0 Following a brief film illustrating some of the extraordinary experiences awaiting a tourist, Dehaan<\/strong> reached into a bowl and selected a business card of a guest who would receive the two free tickets to Nairobi.<\/strong>\u00a0 For the record, I didn\u2019t win.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the most exciting speaker was the enchanting Kenya Tourism\u00a0Board\u00a0CEO,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Betty\u00a0Radier<\/strong>. She stated that, \u201cWith this new direct flight, tourism should increase and is expected to impact positively on my country\u2019s economy.\u201d\u00a0 She shared that before 2017<\/strong> the UK<\/strong> was their Number 1<\/strong> tourism partner, but presently the U.S.<\/strong> occupies the Number 1<\/strong> spot.\u00a0 Radier<\/strong> then played a game with the audience in which she asked a series of questions about Kenya <\/strong>and whoever got the right answer, earned a piece of jewelry that she removed from her wrists or neck. Luckily this never became a version of Strip Poker.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The evening culminated with the guests getting up to dance, some of who were lucky enough to dance with one of the members of the talented dance troop and\u00a0 being a trained dancer myself, I happily got to take a few whirls around the floor.\u00a0 Oh, the difficult life of a travel writer, but like they say, \u201csomeone has to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
