Can you imagine joining screen, stage, and TV<\/strong> legends Dames <\/strong>Eileen Atkins, Judi<\/strong> Dench, Joan Plowright,<\/strong> and Maggie Smith<\/strong> for an intimate tea party?\u00a0 Would you like to hear them talk about their most interesting personal and professional lives and share secrets about of their experiences?\u00a0 Well, imagine no more as director Roger Michell<\/strong> (Notting Hill, Venus, <\/em><\/strong>Le Week-End, <\/em><\/strong>and My Cousin Rachel<\/strong><\/em>)<\/em> has created the enchanting \u201cTea With The Dames\u201d<\/strong> in which these multi-award winning legendary performers sit around a table at Dame Joan Plowright\u2019s<\/strong> beautiful country cottage that she shared with her late husband, Sir Laurence Olivier (Larry,<\/em>)<\/strong> and reveal stories about their adventures as young ing\u00e9nues. These are clearly adoring colleagues whose relationships span decades.\u00a0 Between these gifted actresses, they have earned a massive amount of Oscars, Tonys, Emmys,<\/strong> and BAFTA<\/strong> awards.\u00a0 One of the most endearing moments is a montage of each of these talented women receiving their Damehood <\/strong>honor from Prince Philip<\/strong> or Queen Elizabeth II<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This exquisitely shot film by Director of Photography Eben Bolter<\/strong>, begins with the Dames<\/strong> practicing vocal warm-ups such as \u201cmi, mi, mi\u201d or \u201cPeter Piper<\/strong> Pecked A Peck of Pickled Peppers\u201d <\/strong>and soon they settle in for a gossip fest, <\/strong>each of them comically retelling highlights, as well as lowlights, of their respective careers.\u00a0 Their conversation is unscripted and occasionally slips into being comically irreverent.\u00a0 Inner most thoughts and secrets are revealed such as Dame Atkins<\/strong> passing on playing Cleopatra<\/strong> because she felt she wasn\u2019t pretty enough.\u00a0 An archival clip comes up of a young Dame Judi Dench<\/strong> playing that part.\u00a0 Vintage footage is shown throughout the film including scenes from Dame Dench\u2019s<\/strong> performances in \u201cRoots,\u201d \u201cSchool for Scandal,\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cRomeo & Juliet.\u201d<\/strong> She also remembered that when she played Cecily<\/strong> in \u201cThe Importance of Being Ernest,\u201d<\/strong> \u201cI kept forgetting my lines.\u201d\u00a0 There are also clips of her playing different queens including, \u201cHer Majesty, Mrs. Brown\u201d<\/strong> contrasted by her role as \u201cM\u201d<\/strong> in \u201cSkyfall\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cTea With Mussolini,\u201d<\/strong> a Franco Zeffirelli<\/strong> co-starring Plowright, Dench,<\/strong> and Smith.<\/strong> The story is about English<\/strong> expatriates living in Italy<\/strong> at the beginning of World War II.<\/strong>\u00a0 Dame Dench<\/strong> recalls, \u201cAfter a day of shooting, we would drink a whole bottle of Procecco <\/strong>and then try to find our hotel rooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dame Atkins,<\/strong> whose mother wanted her to be a dancer, remembers when she worked with Olivier<\/strong> in \u201cOthello,\u201d<\/strong> she put his eyelashes on for him every night.\u00a0 Playing Desdemona,<\/strong> she recalled during one performance he slapped her so hard that it left a black handprint on her face.\u00a0 There is also an amusing clip of her doing a table read for \u201cThe Duchess of Malfi.\u201d<\/strong> At the end, the director said, \u201cWell done.\u201d Illustrating her wonderful sense of humor, and perhaps a bit of insecurity, she replied, \u201cIt will never happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n

With clips from \u201cThe Prime of Miss Jean Brodie\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cPrivate Lives,\u201d<\/strong> Dame Smith<\/strong> shares that when she worked with Olivier<\/strong>, \u201cI was more nervous around him than the critics.\u201d With her signature dry sense of humor, she also tells the story of how during the filming of \u201cHarry Potter\u201d<\/strong> she had to give reaction shots and comically demonstrated the different poses she assumed.\u00a0 There is another clip of a rehearsal from \u201cGosford Park.\u201d<\/strong> \u201cGod<\/strong> forbid you should make a mistake, everyone would just stare at you.\u201d\u00a0 Her parents didn\u2019t approve of her going to the cinema but she revealed that her neighbor took her to see her first film, \u201cThe Jazz Singer\u201d<\/strong> starring Larry Parks,<\/strong> a clip of which is shown.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the only sad note is that Dame Plowright\u2019s<\/strong> sight is failing, but despite that challenge, she is as bubbly, charming, and as effervescent as ever.\u00a0 Possessing a keen sense of humor she quips, \u201cI put my hearing aids in.\u201d She reminisced about something her mother said, \u201cYou\u2019re no oil painting girl, and thank God<\/strong> you\u2019ve got my legs and not your father\u2019s.\u201d She shared a funny story that her husband couldn\u2019t find the key to the bar and in his glorious, magnificently trained voice asked his son, \u201cWhere are the keys to daddy\u2019s num nums?\u201d At one point, she discusses acting as being the difference between actual truth and illusion.\u00a0 Fully aware that these fabulous women are in the their 80s, the director asked for their comments on aging which was met with playful hostility.\u00a0 Dame Dench<\/strong> uttered a naughty word that one would not expect to come out of her regal mouth making it a deliciously ex-rated moment. He also inquires as to how it was working with their husbands and after a silent beat or two, Dame Smith<\/strong> says dryly, \u201cWhich one?\u201d<\/p>\n

Wit and laughter abound throughout this unique look into the life and times of these extraordinary women.\u00a0 As the shoot wore on, the Dames<\/strong> began to tire.\u00a0 Dame Smith<\/strong> quips to the director, \u201cHas anyone told you how old we are?\u201d\u00a0 Another question from the off-camera director was, \u201cWhat would your older self tell your younger self today?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dame Plowright:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cGet in touch with yourself at a young age and don\u2019t wait until you\u2019re older like I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dame Smith:<\/strong> \u201cWhen in doubt, don\u2019t!\u201d<\/p>\n

Dame Dench<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cTry not to be so susceptible to falling in love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dame Atkins<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t be so bad tempered and confrontational and listen more.\u201d<\/p>\n

At last these fabulous women are given a glass of champagne and toast each other with love and deep affection, but in fact, we should be toasting them for the enormous contribution they\u2019ve made to their profession. The toast should also include the sensitive, creative hand of director Michell<\/strong>, whose\u00a0\u201cTea With The Dames\u201d<\/strong> is a beautiful thank you note to these ladies and a gift to us.<\/p>\n

At the end of this captivating film, we hear Dame Dench\u2019s<\/strong> voice reciting from Shakespeare\u2019s \u201cThe Tempest<\/strong>,\u201d \u201cWe are such stuff as dreams are made on\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/strong> and indeed these amazing women collectively embody that famous quote.<\/p>\n
