When the National Touring Company<\/strong> of a play that won six Tony Awards<\/strong> last year goes on the road, one invariably wonders if the Los Angeles<\/strong> production will get the same caliber of performances as those presented on Broadway.<\/strong>\u00a0 Please don\u2019t worry as this production of \u201cDear Evan Hansen,\u201d<\/strong> with book by Tony Award-<\/strong>winner Steven Levenson,<\/strong> 15 <\/strong>songs with music and lyrics by the award-winning team of Benj Pasek<\/strong> and Justin Paul,<\/strong> who won an Oscar <\/strong>for \u201c<\/strong>La La Land,\u201d<\/strong> has traveled exceedingly well. \u00a0\u00a0Although you might not walk out of the theatre humming any of the music, each of the songs is relevant to the immediate action and drives the narrative forward.\u00a0 Tying all the complex elements together is the impeccable direction of Michael Greif,<\/strong> four-time Tony Award<\/strong> nominee for his direction in \u201cRent,\u201d<\/strong> and \u201cNext to Normal\u201d.<\/strong> What\u2019s fascinating about the strong book is if you removed the musical components, it could be a stand-along riveting drama, but that said, the music certainly supports and adds to the compelling narrative.<\/p>\n

The sometimes-heartbreaking story revolves around 17<\/strong>-year-old Evan Hansen,<\/strong> played to perfection by Ben Levi Ross<\/strong> who was the understudy in the New York<\/strong> production. His portrayal of Evan<\/strong> as an extremely maladjusted teenager who is more comfortable being on his computer than interacting with his classmates people, nothing short of spine tingling.\u00a0\u00a0 This amazing young actor has mined the myriad complexities of his character, not only the organic vocal stuttering, but imbued his body with all the tics and mannerisms that go with such a neurotic, jittery person.\u00a0 It would have been easy to layer on some of his quirky body gestures but this actor\u2019s physicalization clearly grew out of the deepest recesses of his character\u2019s psyche and one can feel the painful struggle Evan<\/strong> goes through on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

The story begins rather innocently.\u00a0 Evan<\/strong> has been assigned by his therapist to write a letter to himself, and he begins it with \u201cDear Evan Hansen\u201d<\/strong> and signs\u00a0 it \u201cMe.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 In the meantime, one of his classmates, Connor Murphy,<\/strong> well played and sung by Marrick Smith<\/strong>, commits suicide and through a bizarre set of circumstances the letter morphs into Connor\u2019s <\/strong>farewell note, now in the hands of his grieving parents.\u00a0 Except for one brief encounter, where Connor<\/strong> scribbled his name across Evan\u2019s<\/strong> arm cast, that was the only time they spoke to each other. \u00a0The dead boy\u2019s \u201cghost\u201d reappears through the tangled web of deceit and sings \u201cSincerely, Me\u201d with Evan and Jared.\u00a0 The grieving parents, Larry <\/strong>and Cynthia<\/strong>, sympathetically played by Aaron Lazar<\/strong> and Christiane Noll<\/strong>, want to know about Evan\u2019s <\/strong>friendship with their son and thus begins a series of well-intentioned tales.\u00a0 They are convinced that their son and Evan <\/strong>were best friends and asked if they had emailed each other and could they see copies.\u00a0 Evan <\/strong>enlists the help of his best friend Jared Kleinman<\/strong>, wonderfully played by Jared Goldsmith<\/strong>, who becomes his partner in creating the non-existent emails between Evan <\/strong>and Connor.<\/strong>\u00a0 From total strangers, Evan<\/strong> is slowly morphing into Connor\u2019s<\/strong> best friend and with the help of Jared<\/strong>, false narratives are created.\u00a0 The parents become very attached to their son\u2019s best friend, and soon he has meals at their home and develops a crush on their daughter Zoe,<\/strong> excellently played by Maggie McKenna<\/strong>.\u00a0 Our neurotic fabricator\u2019s awkwardness becomes exceedingly apparent whenever he\u2019s around her.\u00a0 He sings the lovely ballad \u201cIf I Could Tell Her.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 I should mention that Ross\u2019 <\/strong>voice is powerful and has that magical ability of going from his middle range to almost an octave above without a vocal break.\u00a0 Some of his solos are gut wrenching in their innate sadness.<\/p>\n

The myth begins to take on a life of its own and the whole thing has gone viral. Soon a fan club has formed, with Alana Beck (Phoebe Koyabe)<\/em><\/strong> and Evan <\/strong>acting as co-presidents.\u00a0 Buttons, tea shirts, and wrist bands with Connor\u2019s<\/strong> image are being sold, a foundation is set up in the dead student\u2019s honor, and a run-down orchard, that Evan<\/strong> said he and Connor<\/strong> visited, becomes a cause c\u00e9l\u00e8bre to restore and funds are pouring in from all over the country. One lie after another compounds the last lie and soon Evan<\/strong> is swimming in so many lies that he almost forgets what\u2019s real.\u00a0 This fantasy has given him a new family that loves and cares about him, something that is sorely lacking in his life as his mother, well played and sung by Jessica Phillips<\/strong> as his mother Heidi<\/strong>, is absent most of the time, forgetting commitments to her son to the point that she really doesn\u2019t know anything about him, other than he has to take pills to keep his neurosis under control.\u00a0 As his fake narrative advances, his need for psychotropic drugs disappears.\u00a0 There is one particularly poignant scene where Connor\u2019s <\/strong>dad gives Evan his son\u2019s unused catcher\u2019s mitt and shows him how to break it in.\u00a0 They sing the ballad, \u201cTo<\/strong> Break in a Glove.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 Conner\u2019s<\/strong> parents are now so attached to Evan<\/strong> that they want to give him the money they saved for their son\u2019s college.\u00a0 Evan\u2019s <\/strong>mom is furious and storms out of their home.\u00a0 Eventually she sings \u201cSo Big\/So Small.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 As you might guess, eventually, the lies begin to unravel and what happens will surprise you.<\/p>\n

Besides the talented cast of singers and dancers, what is also fascinating about this production are the compelling production values.\u00a0 The theme of a modern-day musical begins with David Korins\u2019<\/strong> fabulous scenic design but it is Peter Nigrini\u2019s<\/strong> fascinating projections that gives the production such a contemporary look. Hundreds of extraordinary overlapping images of the chatter taking place on social media fill the back wall illuminating how a lie on social media can impact thousands of lives. The images also project the overwhelming feelings some characters are experiencing.\u00a0 Other members of the team include, Japhy Weideman, <\/strong>(candy-colored lighting design,) <\/em>Emily Rebholz, <\/strong>(costume design,) <\/em>Nevin Steinberg <\/strong>(sound design,)*<\/em> Austin<\/strong> Cook <\/strong>(music director,)<\/em> Justin Paul <\/strong>(vocal<\/em> arrangements and additional arrangements,)<\/em> Ben Cohn <\/strong>(Associate Music<\/em> Supervisor,)<\/em> and last, but certainly not least is Alex Lacamoire\u2019s <\/strong>fabulous music supervision, orchestrations and additional <\/strong>arrangements, and Danny Mefford\u2019s <\/strong>exciting choreography.<\/p>\n

Following the play, my friend and I had an interesting philosophical discussion on the morality and ethics of perpetrating a lie if it results in changing people\u2019s lives in a positive way and galvanizing them into action they might not have taken before.\u00a0 Let me know what you think after seeing the play.<\/p>\n

*Definitely not the fault of the designer, but technically the acoustics were a problem \u2013 sometimes the orchestra was way too loud making it difficult to hear the lyrics and at other times, the sound system was uneven in its volume.\u00a0\u00a0 Not a new problem at the Ahmanson.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
