Story by Fyllis Hockman. Photographs by Victor Block

So my mid-January weekend escape to Hollywood, Florida where temperatures in the ’60’s immediately killed the momentary dream of sun, surf and beach bars posed a problem. How to entertain myself without too much pouting. I chose the Margaritaville Resort to further my research. In honor of Jimmy Buffett’s recent passing, this massive memorial to Beach Vibe, License to Chill, and Welcome to Paradise ambiance helped to lift my spirits. Okay, maybe it was more the plentiful margaritas – and the ever-present Jimmy Buffet serenade — that did that but I found my way to two intriguing outings. While always keeping in mind that it’s always 5 o’clock somewhere…. (assuming you all know that that is one of Buffett’s many legacies).

The huge flip-flop in the Margaritaville Resort lobby in Hollywood, Florida conveys the all-pervasive Jimmy Buffett beach vibe. Photo by Victor Block.

So I was ready to move on from his sonorous tones to the more live-band atmosphere at the Yellow Green Farmer’s Market. Over 300 booths all promoting sustainability through all kinds of artisanal products created by local artists and craftsmen didn’t disappoint.

The outside food court presented offerings from Mexico, Uruguay, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador. Notice a pattern? At one point I saw someone with a sweatshirt from a U.S. city and got excited – until I realized we were NOT in a foreign country despite the ubiquitous South American ambiance. Think of it as a mini-Epcot Center.

Latin American food offerings are pervasive at the Yellow Green Farmer’s Market in Hollywood, Florida. Photo by Victor Block.

The expansive table area is surrounded by a large herd of life-size black and white cow sculptures for which I could see little purpose other than to re-enforce the idea of the farm part of the farmer’s market. Worked for me.

And we hadn’t even entered the huge barn containing all the afore-mentioned stalls proffering fresh fruits and veggies, baked goods, cheese and chocolates, plants and more varieties of nuts and dried fruits than you ever knew existed. Also clothes, backpacks, jewelry, African handicrafts, tropical oils, bath products and too many other items to even contemplate. If there’s anything you could possibly want, I promise you it’s there – you just need the patience to seek it out.

Veggies are among the more mundane offerings at the Yellow Green Farmer’s Market in Hollywood, Florida. Photo by Victor Block.

And, of course, there are even more food and drink options scattered throughout. Did I mention the free samples? And if you hadn’t already had enough Margaritas, they’re here too — along with Bloody Marys, Bellinis and Mojitos. And dogs – lots and lots of dogs – so indeed there are also lots of designated watering holes for them, as well.

Just when I thought I had found my way to the final aisle, I discovered multiple other arteries with multiple other interesting offerings. And just when I thought I had seen all of them, there was a fooz-ball game and a billiards table. I know dozens of towns and villages boast Farmer’s Markets of their own – and I’ve been to many – but the diversity of products, food items, entertainment — and for me, especially dogs – made this a most welcome diversion from Margaritaville.

If perhaps live animals and wild flowers appeal more than cow statues and bouquets for sale, the Flamingo Botanical Gardens and Wildlife Sanctuary heartily beckon. The first offers 3000 species of rare and exotic native tropical plants; the second, home to over 90 species of rescued birds and animals. On the way to the tram, I saw about a dozen cats and was hoping there was more to the wildlife. By the time I got to the Black Bear and the Panther, I was well reassured.

Flocks of flamingos entertain at the aptly named Flamingo Gardens in Hollywood, Florida. Photo by Victor Block.

Just walking along the paths enveloped by green canopies, you are engulfed in foliage, small, large, low, high and enormous, with leaves the size of surfboards that make you stop and stare. Plants are light, dark, thin, thick, mottled, marbled. Birds – tall, short, multi-colored are everywhere – flocks of flamingoes, prancing peacocks and so many Ibises that they almost form a white blanket over the entire property.

A cloud of white Ibises covers the Flamingo Gardens near Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Photo by Victor Block.

The tram expands the journey into vast varieties of trees, plants, shrubs and lush vegetation where I felt mesmerized by the sheer green overload. I became one with the forest as the constant chatter of the guide faded into background noise. I was actually disappointed when we came back into sunlight.

My favorite enclosure was the cactus and succulent garden housing bizarre shapes, grotesque creations and other-worldly forms promoting nature at its most imaginative.

Other highlights included Wildlife Encounters with animals who have been injured or rescued. Okay, a lot more information than I cared to know but still interesting. Feeding frenzies of playful otters and majestic flamingoes and visits to bobcats, tortoises and other wildlife further delight.

Did I still miss going to the beach? Yes. Was I somewhat placated? Also, yes. Who cares what they have to say about World Peace? These are actors and actresses who memorize unoriginal lines and play roles all the time. What could be more fake than that?

I see a lot of insecure faces begging for approval … hoping to grab the attention of directors and producers who will land them their next job. Honestly, these actors are always on the lookout for jobs. Do you realize that many of them spend a majority of their time jobless?! No surprise that there are a lot of politics, schmoozing and kissing that are necessary to land a role.

“Hello Mr. Epstein! Good evening Mr. Weinstein! I think you dropped your bathrobe, Mr. Frunkenstein.”

Except for a very few, would it be a stretch to say that many of them have no personal conviction? Don’t they just follow the leader? They remind me of a gang of hyenas where the top dog dictates when to laugh, who to attack, what to fear and who to idolize. Oh, but they do have power — but it is power based on subjective popularity that depends on the ever-changing winds of the season.

I’d like to send them my 11 year old grandson who speaks his mind. He tells you if your teeth are crooked or if you are fat. He has no filters; but boy, is he honest. I can see him at the red carpet and warning them: “Excuse me Mr. Emperor, you aren’t wearing any clothes.”

And how many times has the Academy given the awards to the wrong people? Historically, a lot of the winners struggled at the box office. (I still can’t believe John Wayne won best actor for True Grit in 1970). It’s almost like the Academy is pushing an agenda rather than rewarding artistic achievement. If Barbie can win an award, if Jimmy Kimmel is the best host they can get, you know there’s something amiss.

But there is hope. There is always hope. The technology has made it possible for several independent film makers to produce movies without the big Hollywood budget. Gather a good story, an original concept, true artists and a beautiful message to share — and I’m there. Indeed, every once in a while true gems emerge from the façade. As long as man enjoys a good story, there will be cinema.

But this is just me. Do you agree? TGIF people!

Raoul

BTW, in case you’re interested, TravelingBoy.com has their own list of award-winning movies. I respect this list more than politicized Hollywood.

“Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.” — Marilyn Monroe

“Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.” — Matthew 10:15

JOKE OF THE WEEK

Thanks to Ed of Studio City.

Raoul’s Two Cents: May 6, 2022

Battle of the Stars

WARNING: Heavy stuff.

Have you HEARD the in-DEPP rumors of Johnny and Amber? As Sean Connery would say: “He shed, she shed the biggest bullSHED.” Surprisingly there’s a lot of interest in the lives of this Hollywood couple.

HOLLYWEIRD

It defies logic why anyone would want to become an actor. It’s a profession of pretensions. With a little makeup you are called to pretend to be someone you’re not. You pretend to be handsome or beautiful on stage and you need to keep appearances with wigs and plastic surgery off stage. To be true to your image, you pretend to be rich and successful so you buy into this extravagant lifestyle and feed the parasites around you. Because you are in a position of influence, you give endorsements and opinions about topics you know nothing about. Who cares what Bill Nye thinks about global warming? He’s not a real scientist. Who cares if celebrities threaten to leave for Canada if their candidate doesn’t win? And talk about privacy! — paparazzi stalk you in your most private moments. You are no longer a person but a property that can be exploited. Hollywood is a breeding ground for narcissists.

Such is the sad case with Johnny Depp and Amber Heard who parade their dirty laundry from the gossip columns and YouTube podcasts to your living room. Instead of settling their squabbles in private, their egos force a public showdown — a drama better than any fictitious telenovela.

A MIRROR OF SOCIETY

What is more interesting to me is the reaction of their fans. Most people I know have already made up their minds as to who is the bigger creep. With celebrity trials like this, the best actor with the best sound bites usually wins. (“If the glove don’t fit, you must acquit!”). The minute they decided to go to court, they essentially kissed their careers goodbye. Who would want to work with such prima donas? Who would want to work with a narcissist?

I am not saying I have all the answers nor that I am above all of this. Hey, who doesn’t want to peer inside the silly, useless lives of the rich and famous? I’m just saying we should watch ourselves — for the standards we pose on them (if fairly applied) should be the standard that we impose on ourselves. Are we better than them or is the log in our eyes bigger than the speck in their eyes?

More than any time in history, I believe we live in a society of narcissists. Narcissism is a learned behavior. It’s not genetic. It’s good that you are aware of this toxic personality disorder so you can protect yourself from the frustration of dealing with the narcissists around you. They will push you down into believing you are worthless. And most of all, don’t turn into one yourself. Many cannot change because they do not see the need for change to begin with. Can we see the narcissist that is inside us? Unfortunately, true narcissists never realize they are one. (If you need help in this matter, I know some people who can help.) How do you know if you are one? I found this definition of a narcissist:

“Narcissists can never be wrong. Their opinions are facts. Their feelings are valid. Their views are always right. This does not apply to others. Everything others think, feel or say is wrong. Point out a hole in the narcissists illogical thinking and you’ve just started a never-ending war. Narcissists will slander you behind your back because to them their lies are the only truth.”

CONCLUSION

Whatever the outcome of this trial, unless humility, grace and forgiveness is offered, they both lose. We all lose. And the fans will miss out on a golden opportunity to learn an important lesson and the great divide of opinions in our society will continue to isolate us.

“There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” — 2 Timothy 3:1-5.

But this is just me.

TGIF people!

Raoul

LEARN MORE ABOUT NARCISSISM
Dr. Ramani is not a Christian Psychologist but most of her studies about narcissists do not conflict with my beliefs. Here is a video about how to spot the narcissist.

And here is a link to her channel. CLICK HERE.

Joke of the Week

Thanks to Peter Paul of S Pasadena, CA

Videos of the week

ENTERTAINING: Tinikling is a traditional Filipino dance with bamboo. November 10, 2017
Sometimes the Runner Stumbles

I have to apologize for my email last week it was crude and insensitive. I don’t know what came over me. I thank a dear brother who was bold enough to point out how offensive the article and the joke were. If I could retract my email, I would. Now I know how all the celebrities and politicians feel when they utter something so stupid.

Another brother said that it was “bad” but there were a lot worse jokes going around. I told him that Christians should be accountable to a higher standard. Christians may try their best but they are far from perfect.

The apostle Paul said that Christians should run the race with the intent to win. In our race called life, we are encouraged to be like Christ in all we do. I am part of that race and (unfortunately) last week, this runner stumbled — big time. Please accept my apology. There is no excuse.

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize'”

TGIF people!

Immutable Laws

Contributed by Tom of Pasadena, CA

1. Law of Mechanical Repair
Once your hands become coated with grease, your nose will immediately begin to itch and you’ll have to pee.

2. Law of Gravity
Any tool, nut, bolt, screw, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible place in the universe.

3. Law of Probability
The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act.

4. Law of Random Numbers
If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal; someone always answers.

5. Variation Law
If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now.

6. Law of the Bath
When your body is fully immersed in water, the telephone will ring. If you don’t get out to answer it, it will have been important. If you do get out and answer it, it will be someone you didn’t want to talk with anyway.

7. Law of Close Encounters
The probability of meeting someone you know increases dramatically when you are with someone you don’t want to be seen with.

8. Law of the Result
When you try to prove to someone that a machine won’t work, it will.

9. Law of Biomechanics
The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach.

10. Law of the Theaters & Sports Arenas
At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle, always arrive last. They also are the ones who will leave their seats several times to go for food, beer, or the toilet; and the ones who leave before the end of the performance, or the game is over. The folks in the aisle seats come early, never move once, have long gangly legs or big bellies; and they stay to the end of the performance. The aisle people also are very surly folk.

11. The Coffee Law
As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until the coffee is cold.

12. Murphy’s Law of Lockers
If there are only 2 people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers.

13. Law of Physical Surfaces
The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor are directly correlated to the newness and cost of the carpet or rug.

14. Law of Logical Argument
Anything is possible IF you don’t know what you are talking about.

15. Law of Physical Appearance
If the clothes fit, they’re ugly.

16. Law of Public Speaking
A closed mouth gathers no feet!

17. Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy
As soon as you find a product that you really like, the manufacturer will stop making it. OR the store you shop at will stop selling it.

18. Doctors’ Law
If you don’t feel well and make an appointment with your doctor, by the time you get there you’ll feel better. But if you don’t make an appointment, you’ll stay sick.

Only in Hollywood would you see a scene like this. Late Night host, James Corden, surprised a movie audience watching “Thor: Ragnarok.” Actors crash a screening of the film and perform a live-action rendition starring the original cast.
