Bucket List

Ever since Dan’s funeral 2 years ago, Olivia had disappeared from my social circuit. She never returned my calls … never replied to my emails. So when a mutual friend said she was going to visit Olivia’s office last Wednesday, I invited myself to tag along.

Olivia had lost 20 pounds. Aside from the usual office clutter, her office was piled with memorabilia; certificates and awards plastered the walls. We reminisced the good times with her husband who was a frogman and demolition expert. Dan was among the first batch of the newly created UDT (Undersea Demolition Team) US Navy Seals. In fact, Olivia showed me his goggles and mini-oxygen tank that was smaller than a water bottle. His covert team gathered intelligence for the Cuban crisis and the Vietnam war. Dan even opened the hatch for John Glenn on February 20, 1962 when the Friendship 7 splashed safely in the ocean after the first manned orbit around the world. Dan was a devoted fan of my TGIF emails (I’m flattered).

Her life revolved around Dan. They were quite an item. She was the opinionated, skeptic who always had something to say about anything and he was the introspective analyzer curious to learn about everything from gem stones to guitar techniques. His desk and his dusty tool shed remain untouched to this day. As she shared her amazing life with her husband, tears rolled down her cheeks: “We did everything together but I took him for granted … I didn’t realize I would miss him this much.” Indeed, this widow was a zombie for 6 months. It took an hour to say my goodbyes because she would not let me go. It must have been a while since someone listened to her stories. Bless her strained heart.

Washington, DC
During my college days, my school was a half hour walk away from the Smithsonian Museums in Washington, DC. I took it for granted that I’d have enough free time to explore. However, the only time I museum hopped was when out-of-town guests forced me to show them around. I’ve always wanted to return to DC and soak in that wealth of history. So, tomorrow I’ll be taking a jet plane back to my old haunts. I’ll be visiting my Aunt who took care of me then. She’s my second Mom. I need to do this while she’s still cognitive. Not sure what I’ll do there … what to talk about, what to see … but I just know this visit has been a long time coming.

Conclusion
How often do we take people and places for granted? The great philosopher Ferris Beuller said “If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

How’s your bucket list? The world is changing faster than a baby’s diaper. Don’t know about you, but I’m not missing this one.

I Outwitted Artificial Intelligence

This article is an important public information.

I don’t want you readers to be ignorant about this technology called Artificial Intelligence. You hear it all the time, but did you know that it is already being utilized by a whole lot of people and it is already available to you? A major player is called ChatGPT. It is a chatbot … a conversation where you engage with Artificial Intelligence.

In its most basic usage, you sign up to a website CLICK HERE and ask a question and the program delivers a lengthy computer generated answer … sometimes in a few sentences. The response is harnessed from a huge database of information that the developers have been pumping into ChatGPT for years. It goes beyond Q and A, it can write reports, term papers, stories, for you. It can create graphics for you. It can create codes for you. It has rivaled medical diagnosis of human doctors. I admit, I too am a novice in this area.

On the surface, this is an amazing tool for many industries but this is really a Pandora’s box where the technology has advanced so far but too fast and the needed moral boundaries have not yet been set up. There is a mad race among enterprising programmers to control the beast. For they know that the one who controls AI controls the world.

There are many interfaces (ie platforms) or Chatbots that link to this database. I played around with one called AI Chat & Create (within a chat app called Viber). At first I was impressed by the speed it came up with the answers. But then I asked some questions about religion and politics and the responses were (in my opinion) inaccurate. So I thought I’d ask it about some factual, measurable questions about Covid-19. Here is the screenshot of the conversation I had:

AI Chat: … while it plays an important role in the global health community and its information is usually reliable, it is not always 100 percent accurate and can sometimes be subject to political interference.

ME: If the WHO makes mistakes, is it possible they made a mistake about determining that Covid-19 was not created in a laboratory?

AI Chat: Yes, it is possible that the WHO made a mistake about determining that Covid-19 was not created in a laboratory. The WHO and other organizations continue to investigate the origin of Covid-19 and the final answer is not yet known.

ME: So why did you previously say categorically that the Covid-19 was not created in a laboratory?

AI Chat: I previously said that Covid-19 was not created in a laboratory based in the best available scientific evidence. After further analysis of the situation, it is now believed that the virus may have originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

ME: Was Covid-19 created in a laboratory? (I repeated the original question).

Gotcha! A.I. is logical and emotionless. It was not embarrassed to say it made a mistake nor could it deny the fact. From this conversation we can see that it is The Programmer who controls the filter or the censure of data. So, if I am biased about a certain theology or political party. I can program A.I. to delete offensive facts. In other words, don’t believe everything A.I. tells you. It is a tool. You decide/determine what’s accurate.

Even Elon Musk is disturbed about A.I.. A.I. is already smarter than humans. The great Sci-Fi writer, Isaac Asimov, warned us about this moment. Wasn’t this fear the premise in the movies I, Robot and The Terminator? Is this the way the world is supposed to end? What do you think?

The Next Door

So I’m in the Twilight Zone — a room with three doors … and I need your advice. Do I stay inside the room or do I open one of the doors?

One door leads me back to the Philippines where I can start a business and create jobs for the locals. Another door leads me to my business partner’s home in Connecticut where I can relax and enjoy a carefree lifestyle. The last door leads me to the Washington DC area where all my college friends and relatives are … close to the Smithsonian Museums and fulfill my old dream of becoming a true artist.

At this stage of life, I am not tied down by geography anymore. I can do work remotely. I can relocate where it’s cheaper than this overpriced California state. I’m willing to leave it all and follow where God leads me. So now I’m praying that I hear God’s voice. Where does He want me to go? Where will I be more effective?

I’ve been seriously considering this verse:

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” — Matthew 6:33

I notice God sending me signals. A friend told me last night that he wanted to join me if I were to go back to the Philippines. I just got a call (just minutes ago) from a very old friend from the past who invited me to his beach home in Bohol (also in the Philippines). So far, it looks like I should open the first door.

I’m no saint (definitely far from it) but I do want to help … I want to get involved in God’s plan. I want to get involved in the lives of people who surround me. I don’t care about the money. I want to share the Gospel because many don’t really understand it (many don’t even realize how important this is). I want to be where I am most effective. There are details that I obviously cannot get into but I do covet your prayers. I need clarity. Can you pray for me? Thank you.
