Raoul’s 2 Cents

Oh Happy Day!

A Merry Christmas to you all. I know, I know — to many of you, it’s an isolated Christmas. But there are many ways we can still celebrate Christmas without a face-to-face party. Among them some of the many Christmas jokes I’ve been collecting (thanks to all who sent a ton of emails).

I’ve sent my kids their presents and my wife said she got everything she wanted … so at least for now, it’s peace on earth. Need I say more?

Happy Hanukkah! Feliz Navidad! Maligayang Pasko! メリークリスマス
Buon Natale, Joyeux Noël, Vrolijk kerstfeest, Giáng Sinh vui vẻ, Veselé Vánoce, Feliz Natal, Wesolych Swiat, 聖誕快樂, С рождеством!, Superkalifragilistic Expialidocious — It’s a great day in any language. For unto us a child is born.

Be safe, be healthy, and remember: Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Because of Christ, there is hope and wonder. TGIF people!

Raoul’s 2 Cents

The Bee Word

“Move like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”
— Muhammed Ali

So I hired a Bee Collector to remove a thriving bee hive in one of the properties I manage. An angry little queen-protector stung me just above my eyebrows. Now the area is so swollen that it shut my left eye. I should have been more careful but I was delusional thinking I was invincible and getting stung could never happen to me.

It reminded me of the Black Lives Matter demonstrators who were marching down the streets 2 weeks ago. From proper social distancing for months, they went out into the streets as confident as I was about being immune to the bees. As expected, the cases of Covid has spiked. Strangely, the news media has not said how these new infections are directly related to the riots. Where are the protestors now? I think many are in the hospital.

If you thought that was bad, earlier today our bee guy called me up. He was frantic because he had opened a new bee hive and the bees were in the warpath. Once you open up the hive, there’s no stopping the onslaught. “Warn everybody!” he said, “Save them! Save yourself!” It turned out that this colony was the insect version of the rioters in the BLM movement — yes, you guessed it, they were Africanized bees! Already they stung the Amazon delivery man 3 times, one of the residents got stung in the stomach, the CCTV installer got it on his head and a plumber in parts unknown. Immediately, This was no small feat but I texted every single resident in the complex. So far no other incidence has been reported. I guess I saved the day.

In many ways the bees are enlarged versions of the Corona virus. We can learn from them. They’re small, they’re many and they can enter any open crevice. Someone will get stung … people just forget that it could be them. People need to stay indoors until the bees are removed from the premises. And lastly people should stay calm and not be discouraged because this too shall pass.

Due to the recent spike, plans to celebrate July 4th have now been cancelled in many cities. But do we really need fireworks to remind us of our freedom when politicians continue to bicker and demonstrators take over the cities? This is true freedom in action. Happy Birthday America!

Be safe, be healthy, and BEE careful about dem bees! TGIF people!

Using music as a change agent is nothing new. In the 70s George Harrison and Ravi Shankar drew attention to the millions of victims devastated by flooding, famine and civil war by staging the Concert for Bangladesh. Since then the list has grown exponentially with global efforts like Band Aid, Live Aid, U.S.A. for Africa, the M.U.S.E. (Musicians United for Safe Energy) Concerts and No Nukes initiative, through today’s U2 MusiCares concerts and now decades of Farm Aid.

You have an opportunity this October to get involved and make a difference when Music for the Revolution returns for the second annual to Fallbrook, CA. The playbill is outstanding… Billy Galewood, Cardinal Moon, The Casey Hensley Band, Daring Greatly, Dulaney and Company, The Highwayman Show, J7 Productions, Rebecca Jade and the Cold Fact, Shane Hall, and Sister Speak have all been tapped to perform. With such a wide array of musical styles, talent and presentation, the show promises something for everyone.

Jim Jones, the Executive Director and Founder of Music for the Revolution said this year’s event is focused on “environmental and social justice.” He adds, “We want to draw attention to what is happening in our own backyard. I believe that the nuclear waste issue at San Onofre is the biggest, most urgent environmental issue facing Southern California right now, and so few people even know about it. There is no easy solution to the problem, but the current plan is pretty scary.”

The current plan Jim is referring to calls for 3.5 million pounds of nuclear waste to be buried just 108 feet from the coast and only 3 feet above the water line. Jones says, “I hope we can get enough people engaged that we can put the brakes on the planned disposal to give us some time to come up with a better solution. The stakes are too high for this to be decided behind closed doors without the public’s involvement. The Coastal Commission has moved their public meeting on this issue to San Diego and its scheduled to happen the week after our festival. I hope we can motivate the audience to take their energy and voices to the meeting so they can be heard.”

What motivated you to stage this event? “My kids!” Jim says. “I think a lot about the world we are passing on to them, and it scares me. I want to do something to help make this world better for my children, but all the social action I was seeing was so divisive that no one was hearing each other. I want a way to help communication cross divides, and music is a way to do that. Our theme for Music for the Revolution is: Gathering community around important causes through the power of music.”

Music for the Revolution takes over the Pala Mesa Resort in Fallbrook, October 8th, 2017. Gates open at noon, so bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a full day of music and learn more about all the organizations that work so tirelessly to make this world a better place.
