The War in Ukraine

I’m not in a happy mood and I’ve got some spiritual concepts to share so skip my thoughts if you’re not into this and enjoy the jokes.

I just watched the news about the Russian attack of Ukraine. Someone scoffed when I predicted this would happen months ago. I’m sorry it’s finally here. I was planning to write about some exciting business opportunities and some fun activities but how can I switch off this concern for the brave citizens of Ukraine? I have never met any Ukrainian, never been there, only vaguely know where it is situated in the global map yet my heart goes out to them like they are my next of kin.

I hear the Ukrainian government distributed 10 thousand firearms to its citizens to defend themselves when their professional armed forces are defeated. And so far, the brave locals are determined to fight to their death. A bloody war seems inevitable because the Russian Goliaths (led by their heartless, crafty, follicle-challenged bully) have no one to fear and everything to gain. World leaders can shout their indignation all they want but Russia knows they will not lift a finger. Cowards!

Destructive history during the time of the prophet Habakuk repeats itself:

“Their horses are swifter than leopards
And keener than wolves in the evening.
Their horsemen come galloping,
Their horsemen come from afar;
They fly like an eagle swooping down to devour.”
— Habakuk 1:8

When a leader is weak, bad things happen. That’s when Yugoslavia fell, when ISIS forced millions of refugees into Europe, when Afghanistan fell, when China stole the Spratly Islands from the Philippines, when the Iranians held the American Embassy hostage, when Hitler started World War II, when the Vietnam War broke out, and when the Twin Towers came crumbling down. Mix weakness with godlessness and destruction is guaranteed.

God allows the bad to happen to force the deniers to their knees. In Amos chapter 3, God lists several calamities and repeats these words after each one: “Yet you have not returned to me.” It’s as if He were saying: “You want to run things YOUR way? Go ahead! Learn the hard way.” The more we resist, the more He will slap us to the truth.

We can easily drag ourselves to depression unless we remember that these events are necessary for God’s promise to come true. Afraid? The safest place is to be near God. Indeed, there is a happy ending for those who believe.

The View From My Cave

I feel a little better today. More tests are needed but my doctor thinks I’m gonna survive.

Since my illness, I have been hibernating inside my cave so I feel like Rip Van Winkle waking up to a different world. Seems like I haven’t opened my email for weeks. I glimpse at the headlines and popular videos and here’s a random list of what I observe. See if you agree with me.

Media hasn’t changed. Biased reporting and omission are still the same in both sides of American politics. Now that Trump is no longer around, there’s not a lot of shouting (although I hear a little tweak from his small corner in the world). Late night talk is boring (although they try their best to be sensational). Some dare poke fun at Pres. Biden sleeping and falling down the stairs but I want to know how he is really doing. I heard he’s going to build a trillion dollar government infrastructure. That should be good, right? I wonder why VP Kamala is laughing a lot when she is confronted with some serious questions. Isn’t she supposed to be the border czar? Why do I see droves of illegals crossing the border (thousands everyday I heard) … many children in cages? Are they infected? Are they getting vaccinated before the American citizens? I notice gas price is a dollar more than last year. Weren’t we oil independent? Weren’t we even exporting oil? Is it at the expense of Climate Change? Didn’t everybody (from both sides) hate Governors Cuomo and Newsom? What’s the secret to their staying power?

I heard George Floyd’s killer (I could never remember his name) is declared guilty. Last year it was all about White violence against the Blacks. This year it’s about Asian violence … funny that they’re afraid to mention the race that is doing most of the violence. There’s a sale in Aldi’s — blueberries for 99 cents a pack! There are lots of toilet paper! Whoopie! Our butts are saved! The education system is finally holding in-person classes. My grand kids are happy. The restaurants are finally open. I wish I could say the same for other businesses. Many shops around me are bankrupt. The shopping malls are still empty. Local air travel is available. The stock market is in a roller coaster ride. Investment forecasters are contradicting each other. Where do you invest?

Covid in the US is dwindling down but not in Asia including the Philippines, India, Japan and more. There, life has gone from bad to worse as doctors and nurses are dying. The rest are scrambling for less effective vaccines — and they’re even paying good money for it! “It’s better than nothing,” they say. I’m praying for them. There’s a civil war in Myanmar — what a mess! China is extending its borders in the South China sea and about to swallow Taiwan. American battleships are floating close by. Russia is about to pounce on Ukraine. With no restriction, Iran is getting closer to developing their nuclear weapons. Israel has launched several attacks for their survival. Poor Prince Philip passed away but Queen Liz is still alive and kicking. Meanwhile in Hollywood … nah! … who cares about Hollywood?!

Are my perceptions accurate? Am I missing something? You guys decide if things are good or bad. I’m  crawling back to my cave to sleep. Wake me when the war’s over.

Don’t Get a Dog!

I’m not fully healed from the mix-up of my blood pressure medication. This morning I thought I was gonna die.

Tonka and Tinker are our two corgis. The reason corgis have very large ears is because they are herding dogs/guard dogs. A little strange sound and they bark like crazy. Tonka is the older of the two … the more mature and smarter dog. He’s cool. Tinker is a teenager in dog years. Tinker’s energy level is always up, she loves to play and to tease. She steals Tonka’s toys and runs away. She’s always wagging her tail and looking for mischief. She’s your regular party animal. She’s the one that drives me up the wall.

I was working quietly on the computer. when I suddenly I hear this THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! On cue, the corgis sound the alarm: “Intruder! Intruder!” No amount of shushing worked. Before my eardrums explode, I decide to carry them up to the window and show them what’s going on. When they see what’s making the sound, they usually calm down.

I go to the window. The barking dogs follow. I wonder which dog would be first up the window. I am still weak so I decide to carry Tinker first since she’s the lighter of the two. That miserable joker goes running away thinking I am playing a game. Exasperated, I pick up the heavier 40 pound dog. My back strains; my feet wobble; but I manage to bring Tonka’s nozzle to the window. He looks at the gardener fixing the sprinkler system and I put him down. Tonka is quiet because he knows the gardener’s a good guy. I’m exhausted. I want to sit down and rest. Unfortunately, Tinker now understands I was trying to carry her, and is yelping like a  hysterical lunatic:“My turn! My turn!” With my last ounce of energy I lift that overweight smiling freak up to the window.

Any sensible animal would do the obvious thing. But instead of focusing on the source of the noise, this elephant from hell looks at the cars, the trees, and to all those shiny objects. My back begins to crumble so I put her down. That little chatterbox shrieks all the more asking to be carried again. Tonka stares at her thinking: “this is the stupidest dog in the world. When I asked you for a partner, you gave me … this?”

In my pain and misery, I start to giggle. I nearly die laughing.

Take my advice. If you’re thinking of getting a pet, buy a cat, a rabbit, a goldfish — they’re easy to maintain and guaranteed to give you a peaceful existence. You wanna die? Get a dog!

Humor in Sickness

This week, it’s been hard to walk. I’m still sick. But I’m getting better. My doctor adjusted my meds, I’m going to a chiropractor tomorrow and on the 23rd I’m meeting with a cardiologist.

Getting up from a horizontal position to a vertical position takes at least a minute. And I take baby steps when I walk because I ache in different places. This can be a miserable existence but thankfully, I can laugh at myself.

You know the caricature of the old man in the Carol Burnett Show who shuffles and moves in slow motion? That’s me!

The pain wakes me up when I sleep. My wife was switching channels one night and I saw the name: John Malkovich. And I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be so silly and such a waste of my time if I made a poem about John Malkovich?

Wouldn’t you know it? The more I didn’t want to, the more I couldn’t help it and I DID conjure a poem in my head about that actor with the weird name. Here it is:

POOR JOHN MALKOVICH
A wicked witch gave John Malkovich a rotten sandwich.
He twitched and he twitched
Then he fell in a ditch.
Poor John Malkovich.

I’ve been feeling better and I think it’s because of your prayers. Many of you have written that you’ve praying. I read all your letters but was too groggy to respond (you know who you are —  thank you!).

I think I am officially old. All the jokes about old people are suddenly very personal (but funny still). But who am I to complain? This is part of life. And maybe this is why God made people grow old: when you get older, your options are fewer… there are fewer mountains to climb. (I guess I have to give up my dream to dunk that basketball). You get to focus on the things that are most important — sharing instead of competing, loving your friends and (especially) family, and preparing to join the grand party in heaven. I’m really looking forward to it.

Events That Led to Good Friday

(If you are not into spiritual things, I don’t want to offend you so please skip this article. I’ll see you next week.)

As it often happens, a familiar passage in the Bible gave me profound new understanding. The first letter of the apostle John teaches about authentic love. And this kind of love (even for one’s enemies) comes from Jesus Christ. Near the end of the chapter John shared the main reason for his letter in Chapter 5, verse 13. The passage contains these words: “so that you will know.”

I AM HE

Why did John need to explain? Wasn’t it obvious? Then it dawned on me. There had/has been so much confusion regarding Jesus (then and now) and John wanted to set the record straight about his eye witness testimony. John wrote that letter so that we, who read his words, will know that Jesus is the Son of God. If you think about it, Jesus had the darndest time explaining who he was throughout his earthly life.

His virgin birth, was done in secret. Only Mary (not even Jospeh) knew for sure that she had never slept with any man when she was pregnant with Jesus. Later, throughout his ministry, Jesus openly explained he was the son of God. He demonstrated miracles to prove it. Yet even Judas who had witnessed the miracles along with the 11 other disciples did not believe. Belief does not come easy.

PARABLE OF THE VINEYARD

Jesus told the parable of the owner of a vineyard who rented out his land to tenants in Luke 20:9. When it was harvest time, he sent servants to collect his share. However, one by one the tenants beat the slaves who returned empty handed. Finally the owner decided to send his precious son “for surely the tenants will respect him.” Instead, the tenants, not only tortured, but murdered the son.

The Pharisees, like Judas, had witnessed many miracles but when they heard that parable, they wanted to kill Jesus that very moment because they knew Jesus was talking about them. I’m sure you know of people like this.

BLOODY FRIDAY

Good Friday is a solemn day for Christiandom. It was on this day more than 2,000 years ago in the Middle East that Jesus was arrested in the early morning. The Roman guards thrusted needle-sharp thorns on his head, mocked him, beat him up, made him carry his own cross while the muscles on his back were exposed after being whiped 39 times with the infamous “cat of nine tails.” The Roman goons hammered him down to his cross (completely naked) with three nails and there he bled for 6 long and painful hours. The Pharisees (the politicians of that day) were pleased. History will blame the Romans, movie posters will show the evil Romans… but not the real masterminds.

That horrific day, the downcast believers doubted Jesus was the son of God. They grossly underestimated the power of the Creator of the galaxy of stars. But that all changed 3 days later Jesus resurrected from the grave and walked beside them and stayed with them for several days.

Sadly … predictably, even after the Resurrection, the Pharisees refused to think beyond their power and wealth and instructed the guards of the empty tomb to spread fake news (Mattew 28:13). “Start spreading word that the disciples stole the body,” they commanded.

CONCLUSION

Present as many hard evidence as you like, but there are people who will never believe. After all, it isn’t proof but the Holy Spirit who changes people. Who is Jesus to you? Why do you believe in historical records yet choose to dismiss the Bible which has more external evidence than any of the historical books? Is it unreliable because it was penned by human hands? Is it too simple? Too complex? What’s your excuse? Do you say you believe in the Bible yet have only read excerpts of it? How do you expect to sort fact from fiction? You’re missing out on a many blessings if you’ve never read the Bible. If you find it confusing, visit a Bible believing church. Or you can ask me and I will see if I can help.

Thank God for Good Friday. We call it “Good” because it was the day Jesus completed his mission to open a path to salvation successfully. This is what I believe but of course this is just me.

“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God [which represents all that Jesus Christ is and does], so that you will know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that you [already] have eternal life..”

EXPLANATION FOR YOUR MISSING EDITION LAST WEEK

I apologize for skipping last week’s TGIF Joke. I was very sick. A temporary doctor had prescribed 4x my usual medication. I got so weak and nauseous that my wife had to drive me the hospital where I went through a battery of tests. The ER doctor realized the mistake and gave me a new prescription. I’m still weak but feeling so much better. I know full well why they call their work a PRACTICE and why I am called to be PATIENT.

Sleepy Joe

Did you know that in the Catholic World today (March 19) they celebrate the “Solemnity of Saint Joseph.” Hmmm… solemnity? Joseph? Who thinks of these titles? Coincidentally, I’ve been studying Joseph’s life and I think the better title is the “Sleepiness of St. Joseph.”

This is purely conjecture, but I say Joseph was probably an insomniac like me. The Bible does not have a lot of detail about the life of Jesus’ step-father. All we know with some degree of certainty is that Joseph was a good, righteous gentleman. He was probably a carpenter (who taught Jesus his craft). He must have been older than Mary… which is probably why the last we hear about Joseph was when Jesus was conversing with Biblical scholars at 12 years of age. When Jesus started his ministry at 30 years old, Mary was still around but there was no mention of Joseph. Joseph most probably passed away.

Sleepless in the Middle East

It seems like Joseph had a pattern of being disturbed from his sleep. In the book of Matthew, starting in chapter 1 verse 18, Joseph planned to quietly leave/divorce Mary because he thought Mary had been unfaithful. But in a DREAM, the Angel Gabriel told Joseph to continue with the wedding because Mary’s seed was planted by the Holy Spirit. Then in Chapter 2:13 an angel appeared in another DREAM telling Joseph to pack up and leave Bethlehem and go to Egypt because Herod was on a killing warpath. Later in verse 19 an angel told him (in another DREAM) to go to Israel. From there in a final DREAM, he was told to go to Galilee, in a town called Nazareth (that’s why they called Jesus a Nazarene). No other character in the Bible had that many recorded DREAMS. The first dream told him not to divorce and the other 3 dreams he was given “traveling directions.” Men, does that sound familiar?

Is it easy for you to fall asleep? Consider it a gift. What a blessing! I’ve had insomnia since I started going to school. Maybe I think too much. Realizing that an important character in the Bible was also a troubled sleeper, makes me feel a lot better about myself. Maybe God will speak to me in dreams. Maybe He’ll give me driving directions.

If you find yourself tossing and turning in your sleep, why not use that opportunity to pray and see if God’s sending you a message.

I don’t know if I should be mad or be flattered (for someone to think I was that important) because this TGIF email is being cancelled.

Big Tech — ha! If you don’t agree with their world view, they cancel you out.

One of my loyal readers received my TGIF email last week but on top of the email, there was a message saying she had been successfully removed from my list.

She never initiated that request and neither do I cancel anyone’s email. If this ever happens to you, please let me know. This is not the first time this happened. I started receiving strange requests like this right after my joke about “snowflakes.” Maybe I need sensitivity training, maybe I should watch the news more often or maybe I was just sleepy; but the thought about attacking anyone’s political belief or lifestyle was unintentional. It was a silly joke!

I didn’t know “snowflake” meant something other than that fluffy white frozen water droplet. I believe I’ve been on someone’s radar ever since. Wish I knew — was I being cancelled because of my political or religious beliefs?

I searched for “Mailchimp censor” and I read articles saying Mailchimp was now filtering emails. CLICK HERE.

How sad that this email company which I had supported since its inception has joined the ranks of the other “Big Brother” tech companies.

How could anyone do this? To you who say you would never censor anyone’s freedom of speech, let me ask you a few questions.

1. Do you believe the end justifies the means? ie. would you commit a crime if you thought it was for the better good? Yes or No?
2. Do you catch yourself saying “you have the facts?” or “scientific data backs me up”? Yes or No?
3. Do you refuse to listen to other people’s opinions? Yes or No?

If you answered YES to any of the questions, watch out! You may have the mindset of the Cancel Culture.

The Flow is Low

When was the last time you gave blood? This is a question especially to the Universal Blood Donors out there.  There is a blood shortage. I’m serious. In this age of high tech everything, no one had developed artificial blood yet. The Red Cross needs your blood.

Did you know that the greatest source of blood donors is the High School? Unfortunately, ever since the school lock-down, only the “oldies” have been the constant blood donors. In all the years I’ve donated blood, I must have seen less than a handful of teenagers giving blood. Wouldn’t it be so unfair if the blood supply runs out for the people who have given so much of their blood?

I’m donating blood this morning. Will you consider doing the same?

I’m tired. Wish I could, but today I have no clever ideas to dazzle and stimulate your mind (as if I ever did) except to say that:

Covid Survivor

It was the second sleepless night for my sister. What started as a mild fever had escalated to a classic case of Covid 19. Her doctor was no help. He was textbook-trained but he had no first-hand experience with the disease. Sis couldn’t sleep in a normal postion because of the constriction in her lungs. She was told to lay on her stomach but that didn’t work. Standing up was not a solution either. How can you sleep while standing up? Heading for a third night of difficulty she got a phone call from my daughter (a nurse who works in the red zone). My daughter told her about flowler’s position — sleeping at an angle. (SEE DIAGRAM). That’s what saved the day…. (I mean) the night. Later on, my daughter gave her more tips that led to her full recovery. I’m so glad for my sister’s health and so proud of my daughter. I’d like to salute our frontliners in this pandemic. I can only speak about my daughter but I’m sure this is the routine of every frontliner. She’s on her feet all day wearing her full plastic armor of face mask, plastic shield, cap and gloves. She trained herself not to scratch her nose or wipe her eyes. There are 60 doctors and nurses where she works. Despite their precaution, only my daughter and 2 other nurses have not yet had Covid. (I guess masks are good but it is the vaccines that are the game changers). She goes home after a full shift but she does not enter the house yet. She has to change in the garage, wrap her scrubs in a bag, go inside to take a bath. Only then, can she hug her kids and her husband.

You are blessed if you live here in America. The vaccines have reached millions already. Infection rates have dipped. My heart goes out to many more countries that still wait for the vaccines to arrive on their shores. Americans get the dosage free. In other countries people have to purchase it (if they are available at all). At least there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel. Let’s continue to pray for this generation.

I Love Lucid

I’m no dream expert but I watched a video (Thoughty2) that explained what lucid dreams are about. The host said that you can actually tap a high potential of your mind when you reach that sleep stage. It’s the place where a fountain of ideas come from. It’s where the outliers in your thought patterns solve problems you could not otherwise accomplish in your waking moments. I hope that what I share today will make you aware of your hidden super power.

Most of the time, we don’t know we are dreaming. But there are golden opportunities when we do know. This explains why I’ve solved programming problems, composed songs, designed logos, remembered people and places when I was half awake. Ever since I watched that video I have been consciously looking out for that “lucid moment” (where I am conscious I am in a dream) and I try and solve problems or brainstorm with myself. Of course the biggest problem is remembering what transpired when I wake up. I do try to jot down these ideas in a little notebook.

Not all dreams are serious. I had a most enjoyable dream last night. I watched some clever and humorous animations just before I went to bed and that set the stage of my dream. I don’t remember a lot but the last dream sequence showed the importance of accents in a dramatic movie. In my dream, I was approaching God’s throne MGM style. There was a glorious choir of angels in the background. The clouds parted and this blinding light flashed in front of me. Then I heard a thundering voice with a strong Italian accent:
“Bow down!  I ema yo-ra Gaaad!”

That just killed the moment. And I couldn’t stop laughing. Why an Italian accent? I don’t know. It was my lucid mind who wrote the script. Isn’t it fascinating how our brains can keep the rest of our body in suspense?

Don’t miss your opportunity. Remember, Joseph interpreted the Pharaoh’s dream and he saved humanity. Martin Luther King Jr had a dream and changed American culture. What’s your lucid dream? Instead of molehills, why not climb the mountaintop?
