The Flow is Low

When was the last time you gave blood? This is a question especially to the Universal Blood Donors out there.  There is a blood shortage. I’m serious. In this age of high tech everything, no one had developed artificial blood yet. The Red Cross needs your blood.

Did you know that the greatest source of blood donors is the High School? Unfortunately, ever since the school lock-down, only the “oldies” have been the constant blood donors. In all the years I’ve donated blood, I must have seen less than a handful of teenagers giving blood. Wouldn’t it be so unfair if the blood supply runs out for the people who have given so much of their blood?

I’m donating blood this morning. Will you consider doing the same?

I’m tired. Wish I could, but today I have no clever ideas to dazzle and stimulate your mind (as if I ever did) except to say that:

Covid Survivor

It was the second sleepless night for my sister. What started as a mild fever had escalated to a classic case of Covid 19. Her doctor was no help. He was textbook-trained but he had no first-hand experience with the disease. Sis couldn’t sleep in a normal postion because of the constriction in her lungs. She was told to lay on her stomach but that didn’t work. Standing up was not a solution either. How can you sleep while standing up? Heading for a third night of difficulty she got a phone call from my daughter (a nurse who works in the red zone). My daughter told her about flowler’s position — sleeping at an angle. (SEE DIAGRAM). That’s what saved the day…. (I mean) the night. Later on, my daughter gave her more tips that led to her full recovery. I’m so glad for my sister’s health and so proud of my daughter. I’d like to salute our frontliners in this pandemic. I can only speak about my daughter but I’m sure this is the routine of every frontliner. She’s on her feet all day wearing her full plastic armor of face mask, plastic shield, cap and gloves. She trained herself not to scratch her nose or wipe her eyes. There are 60 doctors and nurses where she works. Despite their precaution, only my daughter and 2 other nurses have not yet had Covid. (I guess masks are good but it is the vaccines that are the game changers). She goes home after a full shift but she does not enter the house yet. She has to change in the garage, wrap her scrubs in a bag, go inside to take a bath. Only then, can she hug her kids and her husband.

You are blessed if you live here in America. The vaccines have reached millions already. Infection rates have dipped. My heart goes out to many more countries that still wait for the vaccines to arrive on their shores. Americans get the dosage free. In other countries people have to purchase it (if they are available at all). At least there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel. Let’s continue to pray for this generation.

The Legend of the SS Liberty

Few are familiar with the legend of the SS Liberty, a barque… a ship that carried a hundred people headed for the new world. 28 were businessmen, 30 were laborers while the majority was a mix of the two. During those days the trip took them over a month to get to their destination.

Unrest between the the social factions emerged. Some say it was the sea wind, others say it was cabin fever but most believe the trouble started because the inept captain had miscalculated the provisions and they were running out of food. The mutinous passengers decided to elect a new captain: Who was the smartest among them? Who was capable of leading them to survive the trip? Two candidates emerged. One was an intellectual businessman and other was a laborer with street smarts. At first the contest was respectful but then rumors started to spread about sexual indiscretions and relatives getting extra rations. Eventually, the divide between the businessmen and the laborers increased… neither group listened to the other. To make matters worse, someone contracted cholera and the disease began to spread.

Clusters of bullies emerged and they started to destroy the tables and chairs as a show of force if they did not get their demands met. The anarchy escalated to burning the galley which almost sank the ship.

The elections were held. The losing side accused the other of cheating. Bullies muscled their way into the store room, found a powder magazine and blew up the helm and they lost the ship’s rudder. Many had died of the cholera but many more died of the explosion. When the dust cleared, the few who were still left standing cried in desperation at their new captain for answers.

The proud captain, picked himself up from the rubbish and gazed at the grief-stricken faces. He knew this was his moment. He needed to give them hope.

“Well,” he started, “at least there are fewer of us to feed.” 

AND THAT’S WHEN THE RIOT STARTED!

It’s a joke guys! It’s a joke!

You didn’t think I had the solution to the problems we’re facing here in America, did you? I wish I did. My simple message today is we are on the same boat. We burn it down, we all sink with it. So let’s stop this suicidal track of destruction.

My election prediction: The next President will be a male senior citizen with a 5-letter name who will be wondering “how the heck did I get into this mess?”

Home Creatures

Something went wrong with the program that launches my TGIF email. I couldn’t finish my email for this week, the way I want to. Sorry if you were hoping for some profound thoughts or interesting story but I’ve run out of time.  I’ll just share a short story about the creatures in my home.

I’ve moved my office to the living room because our dog, Tonka, was feeling lonely. At first I didn’t know why he was howling like a wolf until I realized he only howled when my wife would leave for work. I figured that Tonka was actually mourning — mourning every morning (groan!) because I used to lock myself in my cave during office hours and Tonka would be left alone until my wife’s return at the end of the day. The 3 cats somehow weren’t enough to keep her happy. So here I am finishing my TGIF email in the living room to keep Tonka company. Still getting used to the dog licking my legs and the 3 cats parading in front of my computer — teasing me to pet them.

When our Shitzu passed away I was so heartbroken and I said I didn’t want any more pets. But my wife and daughter had other ideas. I resisted but it was futile. Now I’m surrounded by 4 furry animals everyday. It’s not fair!  I don’t feed them, I don’t do any of the heavy lifting… I just give them a massage. Sigh!

The Bee Word

So I hired a Bee Collector to remove a thriving bee hive in one of the properties I manage. An angry little queen-protector stung me just above my eyebrows. Now the area is so swollen that it shut my left eye. I should have been more careful but I was delusional thinking I was invincible and getting stung could never happen to me.

It reminded me of the Black Lives Matter demonstrators who were marching down the streets 2 weeks ago. From proper social distancing for months, they went out into the streets as confident as I was about being immune to the bees. As expected, the cases of Covid has spiked. Strangely, the news media has not said how these new infections are directly related to the riots. Where are the protestors now? I think many are in the hospital.

If you thought that was bad, earlier today our bee guy called me up. He was frantic because he had opened a new bee hive and the bees were in the warpath. Once you open up the hive, there’s no stopping the onslaught. “Warn everybody!” he said, “Save them! Save yourself!” It turned out that this colony was the insect version of the rioters in the BLM movement — yes, you guessed it, they were Africanized bees! Already they stung the Amazon delivery man 3 times, one of the residents got stung in the stomach, the CCTV installer got it on his head and a plumber in parts unknown. Immediately, This was no small feat but I texted every single resident in the complex. So far no other incidence has been reported. I guess I saved the day.

In many ways the bees are enlarged versions of the Corona virus. We can learn from them. They’re small, they’re many and they can enter any open crevice. Someone will get stung … people just forget that it could be them. People need to stay indoors until the bees are removed from the premises. And lastly people should stay calm and not be discouraged because this too shall pass.

Due to the recent spike, plans to celebrate July 4th have now been cancelled in many cities. But do we really need fireworks to remind us of our freedom when politicians continue to bicker and demonstrators take over the cities? This is true freedom in action. Happy Birthday America!

Start with Laughter

It’s the weekend of Father’s Day and I wish I had more time to write my thoughts but today was especially busy and this is another photo-finish TGIF edition. I’m not going to even have time to edit so please bear with me.

I have avoided getting into Twitter because I knew it would occupy too much of my time if I ever got addicted. One of the headlines accused Twitter of unfair and unbalanced censorship. So this week I decided to check what all the fuss was about. I decided to follow different political persuasions. What I discovered was a large disparity of media coverage. One persuasion talked extensively about CHAZ or CHOP (the so-called autonomous 6-city block zone) and the other persuasion had avoided any mention of it. One persuasion talked about the Rayshard Brooks killing in Atlanta (where a white cop shot a black man running away with the cop’s stolen taser) while the other persuasion defended the police. Both sides talked about defunding the Police but they both had different meanings of the word “defund.” Of course politicians were playing to the cameras by kneeling (or not kneeling), accusing, blaming, sympathizing, ridiculing — leaving the rest of us confused and more and more distant from each other. After almost a week I realized that it’s true — Twitter is everything I want to avoid.

I understand these are all serious topics but I couldn’t help but  laugh at the silliness. I’m hoping both sides can find common ground. May I suggest we start by laughing at the absurdity?

I decided I’d give you a little test. The first video may upset Conservatives and the last joke may upset Liberals. They’re both clever and funny. If you can’t laugh at them, then may I suggest you’re too serious?  Think about it. We need to unite and help each other create a better world. If you can’t even laugh at these jokes, how do you expect to get there?

I Had a Dream

(With appreciation for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.)

I don’t think I will soon forget
A dream I had the other night.
I dreamed I was caring for six little boys.
Three were black and three were white.

The smallest boy kept running off,
With the biggest, happiest grin.
He thought he and I were having a race,
And he was determined to win!

I picked him up by the back of his shirt
And as he squirmed and wiggled,
He became a suitcase as I carried him,
And plopped him on the grass as he giggled!

Then a little black boy fell to the ground.
His white playmate said “You’ll be okay.
Come with me; I have some games
That I think you and I should play.”

The white boy helped his new friend
To sit under a nearby tree,
And then got a pail of water
To wash the injured knee.

The two of them talked and laughed
At riddles, and silly things that rhyme.
It seemed as though these two little boys
Had been good friends for a very long time.

The other four kids found a ball
And tossed it all around.
They’d cheer each boy who caught the ball
Before it hit the ground!

Such sportsmanship warmed my heart.
It made me feel so good

Six little boys hadn’t known each others’ names –
Timmy, Ralph, Satchel, Sam, Stu, and Wade –
