Raoul’s 2 Cents

I Love Lucid

I’m no dream expert but I watched a video (Thoughty2) that explained what lucid dreams are about. The host said that you can actually tap a high potential of your mind when you reach that sleep stage. It’s the place where a fountain of ideas come from. It’s where the outliers in your thought patterns solve problems you could not otherwise accomplish in your waking moments. I hope that what I share today will make you aware of your hidden super power.

Most of the time, we don’t know we are dreaming. But there are golden opportunities when we do know. This explains why I’ve solved programming problems, composed songs, designed logos, remembered people and places when I was half awake. Ever since I watched that video I have been consciously looking out for that “lucid moment” (where I am conscious I am in a dream) and I try and solve problems or brainstorm with myself. Of course the biggest problem is remembering what transpired when I wake up. I do try to jot down these ideas in a little notebook.

Not all dreams are serious. I had a most enjoyable dream last night. I watched some clever and humorous animations just before I went to bed and that set the stage of my dream. I don’t remember a lot but the last dream sequence showed the importance of accents in a dramatic movie. In my dream, I was approaching God’s throne MGM style. There was a glorious choir of angels in the background. The clouds parted and this blinding light flashed in front of me. Then I heard a thundering voice with a strong Italian accent:
“Bow down! I ema yo-ra Gaaad!”

That just killed the moment. And I couldn’t stop laughing. Why an Italian accent? I don’t know. It was my lucid mind who wrote the script. Isn’t it fascinating how our brains can keep the rest of our body in suspense?

Don’t miss your opportunity. Remember, Joseph interpreted the Pharaoh’s dream and he saved humanity. Martin Luther King Jr had a dream and changed American culture. What’s your lucid dream? Instead of molehills, why not climb the mountaintop?

TGIF people!

Raoul

“Don’t put limits on yourself. Not every dream will come true, and not every dream is from God. But when your dreams connect with God’s plans, you’ll find open doors that you never thought you’d see.” – Max Lucado

“We are God’s masterpiece, created anew in Christ Jesus, so the good that He planned for us a long time ago may become our way of life.” — Ephesians 2:10

Raoul’s 2 Cents

Mass Hysteria

“I’m being attacked by flies!” she screamed on the phone. I rushed over to the lady’s home but instead of a Tora! Tora! Kamikazi flight invasion in her living room, I saw 6 … maybe 8 dead horseflies. I didn’t know if I should laugh or end the woman’s misery with my bare hands. Listen, I don’t know about you but, growing up in a third world country, some of my best friends were flies, rats, snakes, maggots, and spiders. I used to catch them and torture them. (I was a strange kid). I could see she was sweating and visibly shaken.

Actually, there are a lot of hysterical people out there today. In an election season mixed with the pandemic scare, rioting mobs, hateful political cursing, and generous amounts of doom and gloom fake news, it’s understandable why the population is on edge.

Sometimes I watch the hogwash on the news and wonder why people can’t see the hypocrisy and the silliness of it all. “It’s a peaceful demonstration,” said the news anchor while the city is consumed in flames. Some say that’s only a small percentage. Well I say: If they can’t contain even one incident where’s the assurance they can contain anything? Are we so blind? Are we so gullible? When the “emperor is obviously wearing no clothes,” do we need an untainted little boy to point out the wardrobe malfunction? Why are we afraid to deviate from the herd mentality? Are we being bullied or threatened by friends, lovers and other strangers?

Earlier this week I heard someone wonder why her political party was moving in a dangerous erratic direction. “I thought we were supposed to be the GOOD guys!” she exclaimed. Interesting. The other party would have said the same thing. How can both parties be the GOOD guys? One of them has to be wrong. There may be a few sinister Dr. Evils, who indeed seek to destroy but the majority who join the BAD side think they are fighting for the GOOD side. They’re not bad … they’re just misinformed. Since a perfect political party does not exist, why vote in terms of party loyalty rather than on the individual’s platform, character and accomplishments? And if what they say is inconsistent with what they do, it should be obvious not to vote for him or her.

It should be okay to admit when we err in choosing our candidates because we ALL make mistakes. But to make a conscious mistake hoping it would eventually correct itself is (I believe) even worse. But this is just me.

Be safe, be healthy, and remember: People who refuse to communicate, think everything is an argument. TGIF people!

As we maintain our status as good citizens by adhering to social distancing and wearing masks, many of us young mothers are finding long periods of time at home with our young children. We are blessed to have that personal time, watching them grow and learn about the world. I did a little research I found eight very creative activities that will enhance your kids’ lives and prepare them for a new world, which someday will come. It’ll also keep them pretty busy, too.

Cinemood

Cinemood 360 is the large screen television and the movie screen you have been waiting for. This handheld device turns screen time into activity time, and even allows for a full virtual tour of national parks, galaxies and more scenes. Check out this video exploring a galaxy..

With Cinemood 360, one can feel as if they are personally immersed into spectacular nature scenes and it also provides a virtual tour of some of the universe’s most spectacular sights. It is a fabulous way to explore the world without leaving your home!

This marvelous technology also provides interactive games for younger kids that get them moving and chasing characters around the room, scaring away ghosts, or playing “The Floor is Lava” with projected hot spots — all pre-programmed into the device.

Cinemood also provides endless hours of kid-friendly content, including Disney stories, videos and instructions on how to make hand shadows. It is a winner product and it also works with streaming services like Netflix and Youtube.

Roybi

Roybi is a charming talking little robot that will interact with your little one. This new friend will talk to your child and teach them about a variety of new topics — depending on what you choose on the app. It’s an educational toy that was recognized on TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2019, Roybi Robot ($199, available on RoybiRobot.com, Buy Buy Baby, Bed Bath and Beyond and Amazon) is the world’s first AI-powered educational toy to teach languages and STEM skills.

Through fun lessons, games, stories and songs, this new friend of your child (suggested ages 3-7) delivers personalized content based on their pace and interests. It also uses facial recognition and emotion detection to have interactive conversations and provides social-emotional support for children.

Stomp Rocket

Now more than ever kids need to be playing outside. A great product to get them moving and getting some energy out is Stomp Rocket. These rocket launchers are easy to set up, and fly high into the sky depending on which one you have. Some fly as high as 200 feet into the sky, while others seem to do loops. They are all fun and a great activity to get moving as kids, set up, stomp and run.

Tileblox

Hatvitity

Revell USA: Building Sets

Some of my favorite activities for kids include building. Revell USA, the granddaddy of model kit makers with a history dating back to 1945 produce fabulous sets for kids such as cars, planes and ships.

What makes these kits even more fun is that some are snap together — no paint or glue needed and include small screwdrivers and other tools needed to create the final product.

These kits are a great way for kids to gain first experiences in model making and train their fine motor skills. The creative activity also strengthens the self-confidence of the little hobbyists. The colorful cars are easy to put together and can be taken apart if necessary. They are robust and can withstand one or the other collision.

Raoul’s 2 Cents

Cabin Fever

I think we are in week 5 of the Covid lockdown. People are processing things they would normally have no time to consider. People are getting into each other’s nerves. If you are beginning to have conversations with inanimate objects, you know what I mean.

I just recently got into a conversation about the inhumane condition that this government demands of its citizens. A friend’s Dad is in a locked down retirement facility but she wants to be physically present with her Dad to comfort him. She is even willing to get infected and die in the process. She is thinking of crashing the doors to get him. However, from the medical logistical point of view, If she gets sick, she will be stealing resources (man power, medications, ventilators, etc.) from innocent others.

I can understand that the government is still grappling with uncertainties. What is the nature of the “beast?” Does it spread through animals? Does it live longer on metal surfaces? Is it airborne? Do we have enough resources to win this war? If it really is that deadly and that contagious, should someone dictate what is good for you and the rest of society? Should we be forced to isolate? Should doctors and nurses care for the foolhardy victims? My daughter is a nurse who is going through very real trials due to the pandemic. Is it fair for us to squeeze even more out of her to care for people who choose to be sick?

This is just one of the topics that have sprung up. To be honest, I’m not sure where I stand on this one. But one thing I do know is we need to be sensitive to the other person. You may think you have the right answer but I think the better approach is to understand where the person is coming from. Why the need to talk about it? Perhaps it isn’t an answer he/she is seeking. Perhaps it is the need for someone to listen. I do not mean we should give up our convictions. Rather, I’m suggesting there will be other opportunities to engage … not when everyone’s nerves are already frayed. We don’t want to get out of our bunkers hating each other, do we?

Recently, a friend who works in an organization that helps the homeless asked me what I thought about their program. I told her that many programs merely exacerbate the problem with temporary relief rather than provide long term solutions. Later that night I couldn’t sleep because I gave her what she asked rather than give her what I now believe she needed. She needed someone to listen and thank her for all her hard work. I didn’t do that. I need to apologize.

Of course there are limitations. Sometimes, the best thing to do is just smile and walk away to your corner of the cabin. But this is just me.

Let’s keep our distance and keep our sanity and hold on to our faith. TGIF people!

Raoul

“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” — Colossians 4: 5-6

Raoul’s 2 Cents

Doc Hollywood

Last week I shared about Doctor Ka-Ching! This week it was Doc Hollywood.

The minute he entered, his radiance filled the room. This surgeon who was assigned to open my tummy looked like one of those gorgeous TV doctors. He had the proper wavy peppered hair that went slow motion when he flipped his head. Behind him were 2 female interns who were shadowing him that day. Actually, they looked more like 2 groovy backup singers following their rock -n-roll superstar. They didn’t say a word. They just smiled … and swooned at Doc Hollywood’s every breath.

“Drop your pants!” he barked. I looked at the 2 ladies and I thought “no way was I dropping my pants all the way down there.” I think Doc Hollywood understood my hesitancy and he also didn’t want anything to outshine his glory. So he examined me at “half mast.” I couldn’t look at the ladies but I could feel their stares.

“Cough! Aha! there it is! You definitely have a hernia… it’s alive! It’s alive!!! Nyah ha ha!” he declared while poking my lower abdomen like his little play-thing. And then it happened: He opened his mouth to begin his Academy award winning speech. The women’s jaws dropped as they savored the moment in unbridled ecstasy. Doc Hollywood delivered his doctoral dissertation of a hernia … something he probably recites 10 times a day. “Like the interior tube of a car tire,” he said, “hernias develop at the softest tissues of your internal organs. The “tube” jots out of your stomach whenever you exert pressure on it. There is no emergency. Some people live with hernias for years without even knowing it.”

That was the last I remember because the whole time he’s talking, I’m thinking “what kind of a car does he drive? I bet it’s a Porsche. I bet he golfs every day … has a different woman assigned for every night of the week and takes a Martini on the rocks … shaken, not stirred.” At the end of his spiel I could have sworn I heard clapping and cheering from the balcony. He took a bow and he was gone… the two adoring fans dancing behind him. It was surreal.

So sometime mid-April I will have my appointment with destiny. Can you pray for me? I’ve never had an operation like this in my life. I’m not scared … more curious than scared. What would be real cool is if God were to grant me a miracle. How cool would that be if Doc Hollywood pokes around and doesn’t see any hernia? We’ve got over 5 weeks to make this happen. Can I count on you?

TGIF people!

“I’m not suffering from insanity … I’m enjoying every minute of it.”

Raoul’s 2 Cents

Before the Fight Starts

Halloween’s over but you can still hear people screaming. But they’re not screaming because of ghosts or goblins. They’re screaming their heads off in anger.

The world is on edge. Tempers flair between people of opposite political camps. I’m sure you’ve had heated debates with people who are obviously smart in many things but who are apparently dimwits when it comes to seeing the world as you do. What to do? What to do?

In order to lessen the street drama (especially before the national elections here in America), I offer some ground rules of engagement which were influenced by my Counseling Class. Bear in mind that although I may know these rules, I still have a hard time following them. Anyway, here goes:

Understand that we all have our biases. Even those who say they are objective have their biases. Anyone who says they aren’t are lying to themselves. It’s better that we are honest about this.

Accept that you are not going to convince anyone to move to your political corner. Approach the issue as a news reporter taking in the data without any commentary. The goal is not to win the debate but to understand where the other party is coming from.

Keep away from emotions. Stick to the facts. Emotions fluctuate; facts don’t. If that can’t be helped, walk away. Don’t waste your energy. You’ll just make enemies.

“The most miserable people in the world are the ones who live their lives based on their emotions.” — Pastor Warren Lamb

Only engage when you both are in the Safe Zone of your emotions. If you are above it, your expectations will be too high and your reasoning will hover around your ego. If you are below it, you will be too depressed, bitter and hopeless. It’s hard to think objectively and rationally when you are in either extremes.
It’s only in your Safe Zones that there is respect for the other party and true communication can happen.

To “agree to disagree” is where many discussions end but this is a cop out. Unless you resolve the issue, it will build up and eat you. You should agree to come back to that issue when both of you are in your “Safe Zones” — of course a level of maturity is necessary and it may take more than one meeting.

Lastly, approach the conversation with humility and love. Remember, when in doubt, be prepared to give grace.

I know these rules are rather simplistic. I would expound on these if I had more space. For now, you can use them when you approach your next political debate. Let me know how it goes.

But this is just me.TGIF people!

“ Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. ”

Mysterious Search for Water

I need your help to solve a mystery. This email is being sent a little late because I’ve had too many things going on.

For the past couple of days I have been trying to find a leak in an underground pipe. I’ve compared prices of several plumbers and narrowed my choice down to the premiere leak detection experts who charge a pretty hefty sum of about $3,000. The plumbers came and pumped helium on the pipes and brought out their top-of-the-line listening and smelling devices so they could pinpoint within a foot where the leak was, I was quite impressed.

Then I remembered reading about a primitive method called “DOWSING.” Jokingly, I asked them if they ever tried it.

“Strangely enough, it works!” said the 2 plumbers; “In fact, we have one inside the truck.” So they pulled out 2 L-shaped copper rods and showed me how it was done. I couldn’t believe my eyes because the 2 rods crossed right on top of the spot their expensive contraptions said the water leak was. I kid you not! It really worked!

Below is a link to a quick video I took of the plumber demonstrating how the dowsing rods worked:
DOWSING DEMO

Do you have any explanation for this? I don’t. I really don’t.

Not sure how accurate this guy is and where he based his research on but it seems correct. And in case you didn’t know, Filipinos (not Philipinos) come from the Philippines. Why? I’m guessing it’s because Filipinos spell words as they sound.

Auto Mechanic King

I’ve had it with auto mechanics. What is it with these guys? Every single one I know has a nagging wife, who forces the husbands to seek refuge in their cave garages. There they are kings of their little domains where only their customers appreciate and understand them.

The last mechanic I went to caused my engine to fry. That car still sits in my garage waiting for my fairy godmother to appear.

Recently, my other car was making strange sounds every time my car was in motion. I know a thing or two about cars and it was rather obvious to me that it was probably the brakes. I’ve been to a few established shops and they always charge a small fortune to support the air conditioned waiting room ambiance. I’m okay with sweating like a pig. A friend of mine said she knew of Vin, a Laotian weekend mechanic, who was good and charged little — emphasis on “charged little.” So I took the bait.

Vin was small in stature but big in confidence and pride on his garage/auto shop complete with a lathe machine and a grinding machine.

So I played the game all mechanics and customers who meet for the first time play — we sized each other up. A little small talk a little hint about how poor we were — me to lower the price, he to raise his. I admit that I was impressed that he knew exactly what to do. He even ground my brake disc down to smooth the surface. About an hour later, he was done and I had new front brakes. We went for a test drive and I said I still heard the same sound as before. He couldn’t hear anything and assured me that it was nothing and that it would go away. Reluctantly, I paid him $160. For the parts, the grinding and the quick service, I thought it was fair.

On my way home the sound got louder and louder. I called him and told him about the problem. He said to come back next weekend. The whole week I avoided using the car so as not to make the situation any worse. What an inconvenience!

Saturday came and I went back early. We took a test drive. It was the same sound as the last time but miraculously he could hear it clearly this time. So I’m thinking he must have gone to an ear doctor. He insisted it was coming from under the hood. But I insisted that didn’t make sense because the noise only started when we were in motion. He played this little game of upselling until he realized he was dealing with a “professional.” He opened the brake system of the rear tires. Sure enough, that was where the problem was. His demeanor changed because he was proven wrong. No one does that to the king. He had to order the parts so I had to return the next day. I really didn’t want to return but I felt sorry for the guy because he already ordered the parts.

The little dork was playing on his smart phone when I drove back. After the initial handshake he went back to his digital game and continued for about 20 minutes. I couldn’t believe I, the customer, was waiting for this little gamer to finish his titillating thumb exercise. I realized I had stepped into his kingdom where even the spiders dare not crawl. All chit chat stopped. I should have walked out .

He didn’t have to resurface the disk like my front tires so in less than 30 minutes, he was done. The charge? “The same — $160!” A lesser man would have shoved his smart phone down his royal throat but, well … his wife had not arranged for a convenient assassination … yet.

The whole week I’ve thinking about this little criminal and how I wanted to ram his castle with my car. But I remembered the scriptural verse — ” vengeance is mine says the Lord.”

Dear Lord, forgive my self-righteousness. I know you will make things right. But would it be too much to ask that your start the vengeance? Like right NOW?!?!

“There is no revenge as complete as forgiveness.”

Most young people don’t understand what they’re getting themselves into when they start thinking about starting a family. We have to have licenses for all sorts of things like, driving, teaching, hunting, fishing, doctor, and dentistry. When it comes to driving a car, you need to have 200 hours of driving school and you have be pass a written test in order to drive.

There are no such requirements for becoming a parent. I’m seriously thinking about creating a brochure with some tips. Like; poop comes in 39 colors, you must feed a baby every 4 hours hour’s (whether you like it or not). They are going to spit up and throw up all over you, you’re going to have to run the wash every day. Intimacy as you know it will almost stop completely. Once they start crawling they will get into places you never dreamt they would. And then, there’s all the trips to the Pediatrician (who needs a license).

When they get to be about two years old, they will go to day care. You’ll have to drive them there and pick them up and it costs a lot of money. Then there’s grammar school, middle school, high school and college. The cost of all these things almost always requires a second income. For the women, that means you get to do the lion’s share of everything, because you can.

About the time they get to be 18 or so, you’ll wish they’d come home and tell you they’ve found a job (out of town) that comes with room and board! YOU WILL HELP THEM PACK IMMEDIATELY AND DRIVE THEM THERE IF NECESSARY! There will be days where you’ll want to scratch your name off their birth certificates too. Be ready.

So maybe you should go baby sit for someone else’s kids for about 3 days, to make sure what you considering is the right thing to do. Or you could do the egg test. You take an egg and it’s your baby. You must sit down with your egg every four hours for 20 minute feedings, and you cannot leave your egg alone, you must have someone baby sit it should you leave. And if you drop your egg, you have killed your baby.

Every one I’ve ever ask to try this experiment has decided against being a parent at that time, generally within a few hours. If you ask a 12 year old boy or girl if they’re ready to be a parent, the boy will say absolutely not, but the girl will say of course. No one is ready to be a parent at 12! Your body is not even finished growing.

If you’re lucky you’ll find someone who brings something into a relationship that you admire. Someone who finished school, has a job, has respect for others, admires you and has similar values. Don’t be in a hurry to have children. Enjoy each other and don’t get into debt. Have lots of fun together before you start a family. Your children will be the big winners if you wait.

Preparing for Valentine’s Day

Last Wednesday was Valentine’s Day. Miraculously, I was able to pull it off again. My wife felt special and said she really enjoys Valentine’s Day because every year I manage to “hit it out of the ballpark.” She said that she can’t wait for next year’s surprise.

I don’t know if I should be glad or worried. You see, every year I try to come up with something unusual. Last year, I organized the men in our “Couples Group” to sing “Unforgettable” and read our Love Cards. The wives loved it and the men scored high that day. I don’t remember what I did the year prior to that but I do remember some of the others:

One year I arranged for a traveling choir of women to sing her Love Songs at her place of work where she was the envy of her office mates

Another year, when the kids were little, I woke her up in the middle of a chilly night, arranged for a babysitter and we had a warm breakfast of baked potato at a new all-night Wendy’s Hamburger chain

Many years in a row before Pandora and Spotify, I would prepare audio CDs of her favorite music

One of our very first Valentine’s evenings, we watched a movie dressed in the same shocking red and white collared T-shirts. Everyone was staring so we were so self conscious we ran to the parking lot to escape their chuckles.

Valentine’s Day Painting

The Kiss by Raoul

Last Wednesday I posted a painting I had done that hangs in our bedroom. The painting was no surprise to her but it was a surprise for everyone else. She got so many likes and teasing from her Facebook (about 100) friends that she came home in very high spirits.

So here I am, post Valentine’s Day, and already fearing the next year. I should be so lucky, huh? I know she will appreciate whatever I give her … at least that’s what she says … but you know women — what they say and what they really mean can be entirely different. It’s “Clint Eastwood (aka Dirty Harry) time”— “Go ahead … make my day!” We all know she really wants me to do something even more special. That bar keeps getting more and more unreachable.

I’m a dead man walking.

So, how was your Valentine’s Day? Did YOU (men) “make her day?” Did YOUR MAN (women) make YOUR day?”
