On Raglan Road

By Patrick Kavanagh

On Raglan Road on an autumn day I saw her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue;
I saw the danger, yet I passed along the enchanted way,
And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day.
On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge
Of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion’s pledge,
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay
Oh I loved too much and by such by such is happiness thrown away.
I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret sign that’s known
To the artists who have known the true gods of sound and stone
And word and tint without stint for I gave her poems to say.
With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May
On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had loved not as I should a creature made of clay
When the angel woos the clay he’d lose his wings at the dawn of day.

Learn the history of On Raglan Road and see the beautiful woman who inspired it.

ED BOITANO ON “OUR CITY TONIGHT” TV

Last Sunday, the hit Canadian TV series Our City Tonight interviewed Traveling Boy editor, Ed Boitano. The main focus of the interview was how Traveling Boy was able to survive during the C-19 pandemic when few people have been traveling.

Hosts Jim Gordon and Leeta Liepins offered praise and asked pertinent questions on how Traveling Boy was able to pivot during the pandemic by bringing in new categories and episodes to the site. This includes travel cartoons, international recipes, celebrity suites, travel trivia, foreign film reviews, and travel-themed polls, with the most recent, Places in the Heart; a deeply personal series by staff writers about destinations that dramatically impacted their lives.

A few have asked for the lyrics of my Corgi song. So here it is with simplified chords. I used this simple chord progression of only 3 chords to teach my grandkids to play the guitar. The chords are in the key of A but the original chords were in the key of C so if you want to play along with the recording, just put a capo on the 3rd fret.

After paying $15 to have an awkward photoshoot in the aisle of a CVS, only to have my passport photos rejected twice (once for being too dark and once for being too bright), I decided there had to be a better way to take your own passport photo. Turns out, snapping your own passport photo is easier, cheaper, and much more convenient than going to a “professional” (a.k.a., the cashier at your local drugstore). Here’s a few tips:

With travel set to resume as coronavirus restrictions ease, travelers should inform themselves about the cleaning procedures at hotels and Airbnb properties before choosing the best option for them. Ask about cleaning protocols, be on the lookout for red flags such as accumulations of dirt and grime, and inspect surfaces in the bathroom and kitchen, recommends Brian Sansoni of the American Cleaning Institute.

Would you do anything for love? According to a recent study, travel-starved Americans are willing to give up L-O-V-E if it means they can hear those beautiful words: “This is your captain speaking.”

A recent survey conducted by Booking.com found that Americans are ready to hit the road and are finally seeing some light at the end of this year-long tunnel. More than 70 percent said the success of COVID-19 vaccines have them feeling hopeful and “optimistic,” while just over 60 percent have realized travel is crucial to their emotional well-being. It’s clear they’re ready; we’re ready. But how ready?

Traveling with kids is often challenging even when there’s isn’t a pandemic to contend with. Kids require extra gear, entertainment, snacks, downtime, and a careful eye to make sure they’re safe while out and about. Whether you’d like to plan for a road trip, a flight on a commercial airline, or a staycation in your own city, here are tips for traveling with kids during a pandemic.

The Journey Of The Magi

— T.S. Eliot

A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The ways deep and the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter.’
And the camels galled, sorefooted, refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and grumbling
and running away, and wanting their liquor and women,
And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly
And the villages dirty and charging high prices:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears, saying
That this was all folly.

Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation;
With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,
And three trees on the low sky,
And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.
Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel,
Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver,
And feet kicking the empty wine-skins.
But there was no information, and so we continued
And arriving at evening, not a moment too soon
Finding the place; it was (you might say) satisfactory.

All this was a long time ago, I remember,
And I would do it again, but set down
This set down
This: were we led all that way for
Birth or Death? There was a Birth, certainly
We had evidence and no doubt. I had seen birth and death,
But had thought they were different; this Birth was
Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.
We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,
But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,
With an alien people clutching their gods.
I should be glad of another death.

How to Take Your Own Passport Photo

After paying $15 to have an awkward photoshoot in the aisle of a CVS, only to have my passport photos rejected twice (once for being too dark and once for being too bright), I decided there had to be a better way to take your own passport photo. Turns out, snapping your own passport photo is easier, cheaper, and much more convenient than going to a “professional” (a.k.a., the cashier at your local drugstore). Here’s a few tips:

Ask about cleaning protocols, be on the lookout for red flags such as accumulations of dirt and grime, and inspect surfaces in the bathroom and kitchen, recommends Brian Sansoni of the American Cleaning Institute.

Cruise lines may have canceled most of their sailings this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. But, so far, they haven’t canceled orders for new ships.

More than 20 new oceangoing vessels still are scheduled to debut in 2021, including at least a dozen from lines that market to North Americans.

In some cases, the ships will be arriving months behind schedule due to pandemic-related construction delays at the shipyards that are building them. Thanks to such delays, the arrival of a few ships that had been scheduled for delivery in 2021 will be pushed to 2022.

But it’ll be a big year for new cruise ships nevertheless.

Among the most notable newcomers will be Mardi Gras, the biggest ship ever for Carnival Cruise Line. Originally due to debut this year, it’s now scheduled to begin sailing in April.

There also will be major new ships coming from Royal Caribbean, Holland America, MSC Cruises and start-up line Virgin Voyages.

The precise dates when some of these ships will begin sailing still is up in the air. It’ll depend, in part, on when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention clears cruise ships to begin sailing again in U.S. waters. But, in all cases, these vessels already are available for booking.

Here is a list of the 9 most notable new cruise ships arriving in 2021.

The Journey Of The Magi

— T.S. Eliot

A cold coming we had of it,
Just the worst time of the year
For a journey, and such a long journey:
The ways deep and the weather sharp,
The very dead of winter.’
And the camels galled, sorefooted, refractory,
Lying down in the melting snow.
There were times we regretted
The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,
And the silken girls bringing sherbet.
Then the camel men cursing and grumbling
and running away, and wanting their liquor and women,
And the night-fires going out, and the lack of shelters,
And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly
And the villages dirty and charging high prices:
A hard time we had of it.
At the end we preferred to travel all night,
Sleeping in snatches,
With the voices singing in our ears, saying
That this was all folly.

Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,
Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation;

This year, Trafalgar carried out a study to discover what living ‘The Good Life’ meant to you and whether travel contributed to it. To many people, ‘The Good Life’ meant being able to relax and enjoy a time without stress or anxiety.

The study showed that in today’s high pressured and connected world, people are finding it stressful to plan and enjoy their travels, and even struggle to switch off when away from home. Sound familiar? Here’s how to put the wonder back in your wanderlust and travel stress-free with real ease.

Travel has become… stressful to plan

“The main causes of stress and lack of excitement before embarking on a trip are: 50% time and research needed and 39% pressures of social media”

Travel has become… no different to being at home

“63% check the news, 57% check social media, 51% stay on top of emails”

Travel has become… an overwhelming checklist of things to do

“47% of people (close to half) admit to feeling guilty when they haven’t seen all the sights”

Travel has become… overcrowded

“61% of people agree that being in places with large crowds is a negative aspect of travel and 66% of people have experienced this during their last trip”

Rio de Janeiro Named Must-Visit Destination in 2019

Christ the Redeemer. Photo: Pedro Kirilos, Riotur

Rio de Janeiro was named one of the world’s five most cost-effective destinations for 2019. A survey conducted by British air travel website Skyscanner revealed, after analyzing flight and hotel offers, that in addition to being a great cultural experience, visiting the Americas next year could also be an excellent idea for those who want to save money. According to the study, the day rates in four-star hotels in Rio dropped by 20%. The website also bets on the drop in air tickets prices due to the creation of new direct flights from Europe to the city. We list five classic and unforgettable tours for those who arrive in the Marvelous City. Check out:

1 – CHRIST THE REDEEMER: With arms wide open over the Guanabara Bay, the Christ, the Redeemer blesses cariocas and visitors. Sitting atop the Corcovado mountain, the statue is one of the most sought-after sights. The world’s largest and most famous art deco sculpture, the Christ is one of the seven wonders of the modern world. To get to the monument, visitors take a pleasant 20-minute train ride across the Tijuca Forest. The view is stunning.

2 – COPACABANA BEACH: Visiting Copacabana and Ipanema is almost mandatory for those visiting Rio. When added to its neighbor, Leme, the beach, located at Av. Atlântica, and its promenade, famous for its Portuguese mosaic stones imitate sea waves, is more than four kilometers long. Along Av. Atlântica visitors will find bike racks, bike lane, kiosks, hotels, bars and restaurants, frequented both day and night. It also has two Military Forts, one at each end of the beach, with panoramic views and open for visitors.

3 – SUGARLOAF: Save an afternoon to visit the Sugarloaf. Going from Praia Vermelha (Red Beach), in Urca, South Region of the city, visitors first take a cable car heading towards the Urca Mountain and from there they take a second car that takes them to the top of the Sugarloaf Mountain – 396 meters above sea level. The view from the top of both mountains is breathtaking, as visitors get to see the Botafogo Cove, Copacabana Beach and the Guanabara Bay entrance.

4 – MARACANÃ: Inaugurated in 1950, Maracanã has already hosted the finals of two World Cups, 1950 and 2014. It was the stage of the most important Brazilian derbies and of the thousandth goal of King Pelé, in 1969. He also hosted games the 2013 Confederations Cup, the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2007 Pan-American Games and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2016. Completely renovated, it also has a walk of fame and a museum.

5 – TIJUCA FOREST: The National Tijuca Park, considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the environmental conservation unit with the largest number of visitors in Brazil. Last year, 3.3 million people visited the park, including many foreign tourists. With access from the North, South and West zones, the Tijuca National Park shelters the world’s largest man-made urban forest, with 3,9000 hectares of Atlantic Forest.

Thoughts About the Elections

Two personal friends of mine, R & O, ran for office at the primary elections held this week here in California. They both had very limited funding but they still decided to run because they believed they could make a difference.

Their competitors had oodles of money and had TV ads, direct mail ads, radio and social media ads. What chance did my friends have?

I cringed every time I watched those expensive TV ads portraying their political rivals as the saintly answer to all our problems. “Vote for Mr. Slick because he understands and cares for YOU. His impeccable record shows he shares your same value. Look at these organizations that support him, blah blah, blah …” — that was basically the message of all their ads. Of course if you weren’t familiar with the issues you’d vote for this well-packaged political Messiah. So, next time, how would one choose the best candidate for the job when one doesn’t have the time to do the research? I would ask someone knowledgeable and whose values I trust.

Allow me to provide my 5 shortcut bullet points of Voting Discernment. See if you agree with me.

The bigger the marketing budget, the bigger the lie. It takes more money to bury a scandal.

The more endorsement the candidate has from shady organizations, the shadier the candidate. The more favors he has to repay.

The more the candidate asks you to vote by party lines, the less intelligent they think you are.

The more desperate the candidate, the greater his lengths to cheat, lie, steal and even kill for the win.

The humbler the candidate, the more he will listen.

Some people exasperated me because they wouldn’t even vote. I asked some of my associates to vote for R & O, but they weren’t interested. They claimed they weren’t familiar with the issues or they didn’t think my guys were good enough (even though they couldn’t defend the other choices — as if only perfection would deserve their precious vote). Here were R & O, who stepped out of their comfort zone, risked public ridicule and sacrificed time and money and yet my snotty associates wouldn’t even throw an appreciative vote. If the government does poorly, these apathetic souls would have no right to complain. And if the government does well, they would have contributed nothing.

BTW, O DID NOT WIN but I was proud of him because he came in 3rd out of 5 competitors … losing only by a size of a church. R DID WIN and is headed for the mid-term elections in November. Think about my 5 bullet points as you observe the coming ads. I hope to see you at the polls. I don’t care who you choose as long as you cast an educated vote.

But this is just me.

“Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.”
— These were God’s instructions to Moses on how to choose his officers. Exodus 18:21

TGIF people!
