Question: Name 5 or more Beatle compositions on LPs that does not include all the members of the Fab Four?

Answers:

Back in the U.S.S.R.: No Ringo, who had temporarily left the band due to studio squabbles. You can hear Paul attempting to emulate Ringo’s signature tumbling fills, but the same sophisticated spark just isn’t there. Ringo has always taken a lot of flak for being the Beatles’ weakest link, but “Back in the U.S.S.R.” proved just how important he was — ironically, through his absence.

She Said She Said: No Paul, George on bass guitar. McCartney’s melodic bass work is a signature of the Beatles’ oeuvre, but Harrison did a great job approximating it on the psychedelic Revolver meditation “She Said She Said” — one of the band’s only tracks not to feature Sir Paul. “I think we’d had a barney or something, and I said, ‘Oh, fuck you!’ and they said, ‘Well, we’ll do it,'” McCartney told Barry Miles in the 1998 biography Many Years From Now.

Here Comes the Sun: No John. Harrison’s “Here Comes the Sun” is an optimistic mantra which he wrote in Eric Clapton’s garden. Harrison dominated the sessions, tracking high-capo’d acoustic picking, electric guitar, harmonium and washes of Moog synth. An injured Lennon, recovering from a car crash, didn’t contribute.

The Ballad of John and Yoko: No Ringo or George. The band’s final U.K. chart-topper, was written by Lennon during his Paris honeymoon with Yoko Ono, outlining the media circus that followed the couple across the globe. The duo tracked “John and Yoko” without their bandmates (Ringo was busy filming his part, opposite Peter Sellers, in the comedy The Magic Christian) — Lennon handling the call-and-response lead guitar and McCartney adding a snappy drum track.

Martha My Dear: No John, George or Ringo. This jaunty White Album ditty is pure McCartney from start to finish, so it’s no surprise he recorded everything but the orchestrations himself: music-hall piano runs, swooping bass, brash electric-guitar leads, minimal drums and handclaps.

You might assume Disney is the Hercules of family cruising — the all-powerful competitor with no rival. But in the cruise world Disney is still somewhat of a niche player. With just four ships compared to the 52 operated by family cruise giants Carnival and Royal Caribbean, Disney is like the cruising equivalent of Olaf from “Frozen” — a bit secondary to the plot, if still much beloved. In terms of passenger capacity, Disney is barely a tenth the size of Royal Caribbean alone, and it doesn’t offer nearly as diverse an array of home ports and itineraries.

         I saw you, Walt Whitman, childless, lonely old grubber, poking among the meats in the refrigerator and eyeing the grocery boys.
         I heard you asking questions of each: Who killed the pork chops? What price bananas? Are you my Angel?
         I wandered in and out of the brilliant stacks of cans following you, and followed in my imagination by the store detective.
         We strode down the open corridors together in our solitary fancy tasting artichokes, possessing every frozen delicacy, and never passing the cashier.

         Where are we going, Walt Whitman? The doors close in an hour. Which way does your beard point tonight?

Question: Paul was known as the left-handed Beatle, however another one of the group was also left-handed but learned to play right-handed. Who was that Beatle?

Answer: Ringo was a leftie, but learned to play on a right-handed drum kit, which is why he adopted the then unique “matched grip” of the drum sticks that was soon imitated by most rock drummers. It’s also why he would roll backwards (counter-clockwise) around the drum set. An example of this is heard near the end of Day Tripper when he starts a roll on the lower-pitch floor tom-tom and finishes the roll on the higher-pitch mounted tom-tom, impossible for most right-handed drummers.

Captain Belinda Bennett Awarded Merchant Navy Medal

The U.K. Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service has been presented to Captain Belinda Bennett of Windstar Cruises, as “the first black female captain in the commercial cruise industry.”

Bennett was given the award for services to the promotion of the maritime sector under the auspices of the U.K. Department for Transport and Maritime & Coastguard Agency. Her Royal Highness Princess Anne presented the Merchant Navy Medal honor, earned by those “who have gone above and beyond in their service to the maritime industry,” earlier this month at Trinity House in London.

Q) Name the first Ringo Starr composition to appear on a Beatle LP?

A) Don’t Pass Me By on the 1968 LP The Beatles (know by many fans as the The White Album).

Ringo is credited with two compositions recorded by the Beatles: Don’t Pass Me By, a black comedy quasi Cajun/country folk song (with a bit of swing) on The Beatles/White Album (1968), and the nautically themed Octopus’s Garden, from Abbey Rd (1969). Ringo co-wrote What Goes On, another country track, with John and Paul, which was on side 2 of Rubber Soul (1965), and also received a co-writing credit with the other three Beatles for the psychedelic instrumental, Flying.

Flying was the only instrumental the Beatles officially released during their career. It was recorded for the Magical Mystery Tour soundtrack in 1968. (Pop Trivia fact: MMT was released as a double EP in the UK in 1968, but as an album by Capitol in the U.S. Parlophone later realized that it had mileage as an album and copied the U.S. strategy.)

Contrary to common belief, Ringo didn’t write Yellow Submarine, although he sang the lead vocal. Ringo would usually average one vocal per album. Other songs sung by Ringo on Beatles recordings were Boys (an EP inclusion of a cover version of a Shirelles song written by Dixon/Farrell), Act Naturally, a cover of a song by Russell/Morrison included on Help! in 1965, I Wanna Be Your Man (a 1963 song written for the Stones), Matchbox (rockabilly cover song), Honey Don’t (country rock cover), With A Little Help From My Friends (Lennon/McCartney song 2 on Sgt Pepper (1967), Good Night (Lennon/McCartney, counter intuitively mainly Lennon) from 1968 – The Beatles/White Album.

Another song, If You’ve Got Trouble, was written for Ringo to sing on Help!, but although recorded, it wasn’t released. It was replaced by Act Naturally. Later, If You’ve Got Trouble appeared on Anthology 2.

In total, Ringo sang lead vocal on 11 Beatle songs. You may be interested to know that there were 4 Beatle songs where McCartney played drums:

Venice Bans Cruise Ships from City Center

An Italian governmental committee has voted to ban large cruise ships from the water in front of Venice’s St. Mark’s Square.

The vote, which was made after years of protests and petitions from locals, bans all ships weighing more than 55,000 tons from the city’s Giudecca Canal.

This means that all ships from Carnival Cruise Line, all from Royal Caribbean aside from Empress of the Seas, and all from Norwegian Cruise Line will be banned from the canal.

In spite of broad generalizations that Americans have no interest in leaving their own borders, US citizens are traveling abroad in record numbers. According to the US National Tourism Office, nearly 67 million Americans chose to take an international trip in 2016. The world may be our oyster, but some countries impose harsh visa requirements that may hinder American tourism.

The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan doesn’t allow independent travelers. To gain access, interested visitors must hire a travel agent, who will require upfront payment of the entire trip.

As a kid, I measured my summers in corn. Each year, at the beginning of June, we’d ride our bikes down to our neighborhood farm in my small New England town and watch the tractor methodically place the seedlings into the ground. By July, those seedlings would be hip high, and by late August they’d tower over my friends and me. That’s how we knew it was once again time for school. Though the thought of heading back to geometry class wasn’t exactly exciting, there was still one more natural phenomenon worth looking forward to: the leaves changing color.

UNESCO has designated a series of sites associated with the checkered history of Christians in 16th- to 19th-century Japan as the country’s 18th World Cultural Heritage Site. The “site” is comprised of 10 villages in northwest Kyushu, as well as the ruins of Hara Castle — originally built by the Portuguese — and St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in the city of Nagasaki.

A) Across The Universe

The refrain “Jai Guru Deva Om” is a mantra intended to lull the mind into a higher consciousness. The words are in Sanskrit, an ancient Indic language of India, in which the Hindu scriptures and classical Indian epic poems are written and from which many northern Indian languages are derived. “Jai Guru Deva Om” means “I give thanks to Guru Dev,” who was the teacher of The Maharishi. The “Om” at the end is the drawn out “oooohm” used in meditation to relate to the natural vibration of the universe. While visiting the Maharishi in Rishikesh, John purchased a set of brass bracelets with the words “Jai Guru Dev” imprinted on them. The bracelets are now in the possession of Julian Lennon and were on display at the “White Feather – The Spirit Of John Lennon” exhibit at the Beatles Story in Liverpool.
