But it's not fair! Did you realize that women have 2 birthdays a year … and one of them is Valentine's Day? And for the married Mrs., they have a third birthday. What about us men? Don't we deserve a rose too? Why do we guys have to always (not only remember these special occasions but also) come up with a surprise to prove our undying love? Where's the equality? Where's the justice?

Raoul’s Two Cents: February 11, 2022

Love and Football

When I picked up my mail today, I noticed a young lady sporting a fresh hairstyle and a hint of makeup. Hovering around her was a neatly dressed gentleman about the same age. Both obviously dumped their school clothes for this occasion. They were in their early teens and this was probably their very first encounter after school. Twitterpated molecules of testosterone went flying. The bait and the chase was on. With Valentines just a few days away, love is definitely in the air.

But it’s not fair! Did you realize that women have 2 birthdays a year … and one of them is Valentine’s Day? And for the married Mrs., they have a third birthday.

What about us men? Don’t we deserve a rose too? Why do we guys have to always (not only remember these special occasions but also) come up with a surprise to prove our undying love? Where’s the equality? Where’s the justice?

Actually, if my wife gave me a rose, I wouldn’t know what to do with it … I’d probably eat it. I mean, what’s this fascination with a flower? You put it in vase. You show it off. You smell it; and then what? Wait for it to wilt? I’ll take a cold bottle of beer instead of watching a plant die in slow motion.

Well, this is an unusual year. This is the year, just before V-day, you women can prove your love because Sunday is macho day! It’s the Superbowl! I propose that women demonstrate their eternal devotion to their men every Superbowl day by preparing the cold beer and the reprehensible junk food that go with it! Learn the rules! Ask questions as if you’re really interested and pretend to enjoy the game. For one time in the year, spoil your man. Let them be sloppy, let them scream and yell and bring out the gorilla inside them. Let’s make it official! Sounds like a plan? Good!

Some of you men are already spoiled rotten every Superbowl day. You lucky bastards! Invite me to your home now! Just kidding! I’m not really into football. I’m not a gorilla. I don’t even know all the rules. But I do love to watch the reaction of people who are so into it. Basketball is my game.

Anyway, Tom of Pasadena sent this video of best-animal-friends (see below) and I rehashed it with new music and a poem. (Be sure to turn on the closed caption so you can read the poem.) I transformed it into a Valentines Video which I dedicate to my wife. Men, I’m doing you a favor — you can pass this video off to your own wives. Send this video along with your roses and shock her with your sensitive side. And you women … I guess you can share this video too. 😉

TGIF people! Enjoy the Superbowl and get in the mood for l’amour, l’amour. 😀

Raoul

Joke of the Week

Thanks to Peter Paul of S Pasadena for this Valentines Day joke.

Art by Raoul Pascual

Valentine Video of the week

Thanks to Tom of Pasadena, CA for this video of animal friends.
On Raglan Road

By Patrick Kavanagh

On Raglan Road on an autumn day I saw her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue;
I saw the danger, yet I passed along the enchanted way,
And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day.
On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge
Of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion’s pledge,
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay
Oh I loved too much and by such by such is happiness thrown away.
I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret sign that’s known
To the artists who have known the true gods of sound and stone
And word and tint without stint for I gave her poems to say.
With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May
On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had loved not as I should a creature made of clay
When the angel woos the clay he’d lose his wings at the dawn of day.

Learn the history of On Raglan Road and see the beautiful woman who inspired it.

ED BOITANO ON “OUR CITY TONIGHT” TV

Last Sunday, the hit Canadian TV series Our City Tonight interviewed Traveling Boy editor, Ed Boitano. The main focus of the interview was how Traveling Boy was able to survive during the C-19 pandemic when few people have been traveling.

Hosts Jim Gordon and Leeta Liepins offered praise and asked pertinent questions on how Traveling Boy was able to pivot during the pandemic by bringing in new categories and episodes to the site. This includes travel cartoons, international recipes, celebrity suites, travel trivia, foreign film reviews, and travel-themed polls, with the most recent, Places in the Heart; a deeply personal series by staff writers about destinations that dramatically impacted their lives.

My Corgis and Me: Chords and Lyrics

A few have asked for the lyrics of my Corgi song. So here it is with simplified chords. I used this simple chord progression of only 3 chords to teach my grandkids to play the guitar. The chords are in the key of A but the original chords were in the key of C so if you want to play along with the recording, just put a capo on the 3rd fret.

After paying $15 to have an awkward photoshoot in the aisle of a CVS, only to have my passport photos rejected twice (once for being too dark and once for being too bright), I decided there had to be a better way to take your own passport photo. Turns out, snapping your own passport photo is easier, cheaper, and much more convenient than going to a “professional” (a.k.a., the cashier at your local drugstore). Here’s a few tips:

It goes without saying that 2020 was a year like no other, from COVID-19, to a very tough election season, the US has seen one of its most stressful years on record. With this in mind CT Shirts have analyzed Google Search data and cross referenced it with population and average household income to reveal the most stressed states.

Raoul’s 2 Cents

Open for Business? What Do You Think?

Are you looking forward to Monday? That’s the day businesses are supposed to restart opening their doors. At least that’s what the US Federal government suggested at the time of this writing. It’s up to each governor to decide what’s good for the State. And it’s up to each business to decide what’s good for their company.

I was apprehensive about that. I thought it was too early because people are still getting infected and people are still dying. But then I watched an interview with a woman from the Wall Street Journal (I forget her name). And she had an insight about when to open: “You have to balance the need for health and safety with the need to bring back the economy and getting people’s lives back to normal.” She said the prevailing mindset is a purist mindset (which was like mine) — to open business only if every trace of that virus has been eliminated. Although it sounds good and safe, the drawback is we will be waiting forever for that to happen while the economy and people’s mental state will continue to spiral downward to the point where it may never recover. A better alternative, she claimed, is to open the doors now while the epidemic continues to loose steam (accepting that there will still be people getting infected and dying) in exchange for the economy starting to revive. Does this make sense to you? What do you think?

If the health charts that I’ve been seeing are accurate, Covid-19 isn’t as deadly as was earlier estimated. More people are dying by other causes anyway. There are also more medications and ventilators available than a month ago. More people have now been exposed and have built up their immunity, so the risks have significantly diminished. What do you think?

This balancing principle may be sound but it still needs wisdom when to implement. Nevertheless, if the shops and offices continue to take precautionary measures, if people wear face masks and wash their hands, avoid physical contact, keep their hands away from their eyes, nose and mouth … this should work. What do you think?

Come Monday, many businesses will start opening their doors. Some already have. Let’s hope they will be responsible. And let’s start living again. What do you think?

Keep safe and hold on to your faith. TGIF people!

Today is Good Friday

As is our tradition, no jokes today. I’m sorry. And I also apologize if I will be speaking about my faith. Good Friday is the most solemn day in Christiandom; for today, Jesus, the Christ, was wrongfully accused and crucified. They decorated his head with a crown of thorns and nailed his hands and feet on a wooden cross. He paid for a debt he never owed and for a price we (all of us) could not pay.

Of course, the story didn’t end there — because in three days, on Easter Sunday, they found His tomb empty. A resurrection had taken place.

I trust you and your family are safe and keeping your social distance. I have been praying for all of you who are subscribed to this email. I hope you don’t think I am disrespectful of your beliefs but I’ve been praying that you would join me to the Easter celebration in my church this coming Sunday. Like most churches, Grace EV Free church will be broadcasting its service online on Youtube Live so you can watch in the comfort of your home. Yes, you can even wear your pajamas. 😉

During these times of Covid 19, the future of our family, our finances, our careers and even our mortality are uncertain. No other time in history have we all been so unstable. It is my prayer that you and I might find comfort and answers to many questions this Easter Sunday. Have a Good Friday! TGIF!

Ark

“Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence” … so it reads in Genesis 6 … everyone partied as they pleased… doing their own “thing.” In the midst of the debauchery a “crazy” boat builder and his family hammer away. Noah probably didn’t really understand why he had to build a humongous boat in the middle of dry land. He didn’t understand why Mommy and Daddy animals followed him inside the ark. Imagine the jeers thrown Noah’s family. Quitting must have been tempting but he remained obedient. And then the rain poured.

Honestly, is the earth corrupt in God’s sight? Call me a crazy boat builder but I personally believe the current pandemic has God’s fingerprints written all over. God doesn’t play by our narratives. He is beyond the confines of natural and human laws.

The invisible dragon infects rich and poor alike. Heroes emerge amidst the cries drowning in anguish. Unbelievably, nefarious telemarketers, spammers and clueless criminals only see opportunities. Politicians still play their pretentious games. Are we surprised that the people who died in the flood were clueless till the very end?

Then I look at myself and I’m no different. I see a self-righteous, imperfect creature. There’s much to change. It’s difficult and I need help from a power beyond me. I’m searching for what I can and should do now. How about you? Let’s pray for each other. If there’s an ark to build let’s build it together.

But this is just me.

Let’s keep our distance and keep our sanity and hold on to our faith. TGIF people!

Raoul’s 2 Cents

Valentine’s Day

Did you wake up with the permeating smell of roses in the air? Do you see people adorned with red and accents of red? Do you see sweethearts holding hands, kissing and hugging and whispering sweet nothings? Then it must be Valentine’s Day. If you’re a guy, did you prepare a present for Juliet? And if you’re a gal, are you expecting to be swept off your feet by your charming Romeo? Oh, the pressures for us guys and the lofty expectations for you gals.

I started to write a song for my wife and hoped to surprise her today but with the onslaught of activities with a new client, I ran out of time. It’s not a good way for me to start this special day. For this TGIF edition, I wish I could write something beautiful and profound about Valentines Day but my mind’s wasted from today’s activities so the only thing I can think of sharing with you is the apostle Paul’s letter to the people in Corinth. He explained the true meaning of the word “love.” He said:

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” — 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8

I hope my wife likes my simple gift of roses. It’s all this very tired Romeo can give her this morning. I hope I can still sweep her off her feet by tonight. As for you, I hope someone will touch your heart in a profound way this Valentine’s day.

(BTW, if you have Netflix and want to watch a tearjerk romantic movie, watch “Love, Rosie.” Warning: It’s not for kids.)

I do not know if someone taught me about not having expectations or if I just evolved. But I know this for sure, you are almost guaranteed to be disappointed anytime you are expecting a certain outcome or something to happen to benefit you from someone else. But if you expect nothing, you may be pleasantly surprised occasionally.

Giving other people the latitude to do or not do something for you is always best. Some things are completely out of our control so hoping, praying or expecting something for your birthday or some other occasion will fail nine out of ten times. If you want something, you have the option of making that happen yourself. I call that a Un-Birthday present. Remember, there are a total of 364 of them each year. On your mark, get set, GO!

Personally, I love picking up a gift for someone for no reason at all. Just the fact that I saw something that made me think fondly of them is fun for me. Also, there are times when your budget just doesn’t allow us to even buy something we really need for ourselves, or for someone else’s special day.

A note is something that is affordable and most people hang on to them just because of the sentiments inside and the special thoughts we include in them. I have been sending notes and cards to friends all of my life. I really never thought much about that until I lost my husband and son. The cards and notes I received meant so much to me and I will cherish them always.

I have a special box that has cards that I have received from family members and friends that have been gone for decades and I enjoy re-reading them occasionally. They are like little gifts to me. Recognizing the handwriting of someone you have loved and lost is so endearing to me.

I think in the end, it comes down to a little box that holds the mementos that have the greatest meaning for all of us and can transport us back in time where we can savor a memory that is capable of filling us up.

I also think that the little acts of kindness we do for others are actually gifts we give ourselves. The joy that something as simple as a phone call brings to you and someone you call, is the gift that keeps on giving, because you can play and re-play that call in your mind as often as needed!

So remember, expect nothing and you may be pleasantly surprised.

All the hopes and feelings you have felt all of your life in regards to love will never stop unless you put on YOUR BRAKES! Your hopes, dreams, thoughts and feelings that you have for your soul mate will continue your entire life. And, if you’re lucky your appreciation and the intimacy you share will not subside, but it will only deepen if you don’t turn off your mojo machine!

It takes energy to stay connected and it is most certainly a choice all of us can make. However, if you carry grudges and are angry (just for anger’s sake) you can sabotage your relationship BIG TIME. All of us have garbage and knowing that carrying it on your back will keep you from connecting with your mate and almost anyone you can name. If you’re IN IT for the long haul because you finally realize that dragging all those DEAD BODIES AROUND just doesn’t work, you’re on the right track!

It’s important to be PRESENT when you come home from work. Turning off the distractions that can interfere with the little time we actually get to spend together is critical. Wearing blinders that keep you focused at home has a huge payoff. Knowing that your mate is actively listening to you is a gift! People want to be heard and understood, but if you’re on the phone, watching or playing something, you aren’t engaged at all… you’re unavailable.

Pretending that its 1945 all over again works wonders. (T.V. wasn’t in all homes yet!!) That means, no T.V. or games, and turning off your phone is wise. Never miss an opportunity to engage with your mate because one of you will die before the other and it’s no fun losing your mate. There will be silence when you try this and that’s okay. But practicing this even one night a week will change your life in ways that you can’t even imagine.

Also, remembering that the first four minutes you spend with ANYONE will dictate the quality of the time you spend together. Making eye contact and smiling with business associates is a good start away from home. Holding your mate in your arms for 30 seconds produces endorphins in your brain and it’s a feeling like no other and you don’t need alcohol or drugs for that.

I am a curious person and I enjoy asking friends and family questions about growing up because that part of our lives is always there for us to tap into. Everyone has a story to tell and all of them are worth talking about and one leads to another. Doing this will tap into your inner child, and your child always wants to come out and play. Remember how it felt when you knocked on the door of a friend’s house and asked, “Can Jane or Jack come out to play?”

It is important to make yourself happy because that’s actually your job, not someone else’s. Waiting for your mate to come home and make you happy is a trap and if it feels like a trap, it is a trap. Everyone needs some time to come in for a landing after working all day particularly if they have a long drive home. That’s why a hug when your partner walks through the door is so important.

“Coming down” from work takes time, and men and women do that differently. A women will begin thinking about what she has to do around the house on her way home and men think about how they’re going to relax. Helping each other make dinner can be a fun thing and that leaves more time for both of you to relax later on.

Finding someone who is your friend first and not becoming intimate too quickly, makes for a stronger relationship in the end. After all, you get out of a thing what you put into it. Couples have to keep falling in love all over again and again. One of the best ways I know how to do that is to sit across the table from your mate and remember what attracted you to one another in the first place! I think it’s worth the time and energy to change up things a little because it may get your mojo working again. Try it, you might like it!

So much of our lives are based on good fortune. If you’re fortunate, you have parents who respected and admired each other, whose value system and priorities were similar before their relationship began. Living on you own or going away to college prior to starting a serious relationship is a great learning experience. You can learn who you really are by being on your own. If you know yourself and are self-reliant you bring more to the table. Also, not having unreasonable expectations of each other is a key factor in how you walk down the road of life together and ultimately how the surviving spouse deals with the aftermath of the death of their spouse.

Life has a way of sending you bumps, and how you deal with these challenges can dictate how your life works out. Not losing a job, not becoming really ill, choosing to be monogamous, not being in a car accident, and not getting divorced are but a few of the bumps you can encounter.

Most couples can never recuperate financially or emotionally from a bad divorce. And, sometimes parents use their children as weapons against each other with disastrous results that can have long term effects on how well their children’s lives play out. Shuffling children back and forth between parents is unsettling to say the very least.

Today, our lives are moving at Mach speed and we are not designed to thrive in that sort of environment. There are so many things that distract us from what should be our priorities. You must keep falling in love all over again with your spouse or significant other, again and again. The only way I know how to achieve that is to slow down and look into the eyes of your spouse every chance you get and reaffirm your commitment to each other.

Remembering the reasons you fell in love, the joy you felt when you first met and how you couldn’t wait to see or touch each other at the beginning and end of each day. Validating one another for the gifts you bring to your relationship is critical. If you bought a kitten or a puppy, you would be praising it each time it displayed good behavior. If you did that consistently, you would have a well behaved animal that only gives you unconditional love 24/7 and the same thing is true in people.

If you do not have expectations of others, you cannot possibly be disappointed. If you pick someone who has good habits, respect themselves and others, says what they mean, and mean what they say, you have a much better chance of living happily ever after just like in the fairy tales we read as children.

I love happy endings, and we are all writing the scripts of our lives. If you’re not happy, go into re-write mode.
