Dad Goes to the Theater

How do you measure fun? Is it by how much you spend? Is a plush restaurant better than a Fast Food joint? Is it by how far you escape from the doldrums of life? Is a long distance vacation better than a drive to the park? How about value? Does the bigger engagement ring prove a deeper love? Does a purchased greeting card really send the better affection than a hand made one?

My Bible Study group decided to watch West Side Story at the local theater. My lovely wife suggested we invite my Dad. I thought that was nice of her to think of him. And so I asked him if he wanted to join us. As soon as I invited him I realized he may not enjoy the play. It would be a waste if he wouldn't appreciate the sights and the sounds. Those tickets weren't cheap. I would also have to pick him up from my sister who lived over an hour away.

Let me back track a little bit. My Dad can't hear very well. He wears a headphone that is connected to a small amplifier. Often, you can hear chirping feedback when the earphone and microphone get close enough. And that feedback happens when my Dad is wearing the headphones. Ordinarily, the feedback would shatter your eardrums but his hearing is so bad that this is normal for him. Yup! That's how bad it is.

On top of that, my Dad also has a vision problem. He squints when he reads. He can't read street signs a few feet away from him. I'm guessing he only sees moving shapes and hazy colors.

How would he hear the dialogue and the music? How would he see the sets and the dancing? Despite all that, he said he would love to come. In fact, he was looking forward to it. Whoah!

I learned a valuable lesson. Here I was thinking about practical issues when having fun isn't measured by cost nor venue. Having fun is just being with people you love.

Theater tickets? Less than $50. Picking him up in the middle of a work day --- a few dollars for gas and an hour of driving. Having your Dad be part of a fun evening --- priceless.

Mother's day is coming up. Be creative.

TGIF people!

My wife and I were watching “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” while we were in bed. I turned to her and said, “Do you want to fool around?"

“No,” she answered.

I then said, “Is that your final answer?"

She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying, “Yes

So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend."

And that's when the fight started…

I guess this must be a common car problem in Zimbabwe. No, it isn't the carburetor, it isn't the batteries ... it's something else.
