TRAFFIC AND PATIENCE

In an Italian restaurant as I write this ... doing a project with a client and stealing away for a few minutes to prepare my TGIF for the week.

This has been a very busy week. I haven't driven this much in a very long time ... haven't been trapped in California traffic is what I really mean. Hard to imagine that most people go through this traveling ritual every day and every night. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a direct correlation to traffic and murder. That murderous thought crossed my mind when a black pickup truck wiggled its way two cars ahead of me. How hard is it to wait in line like everybody else? Don't you just hate these low lifes? There's always this self-centered driver who thinks he is above everyone else and assumes we aren't in as much hurry as he is. And what does all his obnoxious maneuvering achieve? A few seconds less driving time for Mr. Big Shot. Yet the damage of planting anger affects others a whole day.

I think God created traffic to teach us patience. I just wish God would stop the lesson already. One of my favorite prayers is: "Lord, grant me patience ... and I want it NOW!!!"

I need to get back to work. Because of the limited time and the circumstances, I decided to use past jokes from the early days of this e-letter. Hope you like it!

"A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense."

Fairy Tale
sent by Naomi of Burbank, CA

One day, long, long ago, there was this woman who surprisingly, did not whine, nag or complain ...

But this was a long time ago.....

and it was just ONE day.

The End

From the TGIF vault:
New Teacher
sent by Bernie of Virginia, CA

On the first day of the new school year, the sophomore English class had a new, very stern, teacher.

A hush fell over the room as the teacher panned his gaze across all the kids.

Finally, he spoke.

"There are two words that are unacceptable in my class, either orally or in your homework, papers, or tests. Use these words even once and your grade will be lowered one full letter. The first one is 'gross,' and the other is 'cool.' Are there any questions?"

One gawky teen raised his hand.

"Yes?" said the new teacher.

The teen asked, "So? What are the two words?"

Learning to Speak Italian
Contributed by Don of Kelowna, B.C.

How Italians Learn to talk

I featured this video before but I didn't want the new subscribers to miss out on this. Besides learning the proper vocabulary or the intonations, Italians have another tool to communicate --- their hand gestures. Observe grandma train her granddaughter rudiments of Italian dinner conversation.

Gun Fail Compilation

Some people will find this funny. Others will hate this. I am bothered by the potential of real harm that these people can do. Now I'm not saying I'm for or against gun control (that's a long discussion) but I include this to show the danger that is in the hands of some of the people who have access to guns.

What's Going On?

Whats going on group sing

Marvin Gaye's hit song "What's Going On" is given a wonderful makeover across the oceans for a common cause. It's like last week's "Guantanamera" video. BTW, Art told me the meaning of that song -- "The girl from Guantanamo" and it's a Cuban folk song. Art also sent Julio Iglesia's version.

Choir sings "Africa" With Just Their Voices and Hands

Toto's Africa by choir

Snapping their fingers, they create the sound of raindrops in the African forest and sing "Africa" which was originally sung by the band named "Toto." Kinda confusing explanation, huh?
I used this video before but it's worth a revisit.

Summer Song Chad and Jeremy

They were part of the British Invasion of the 1960s. Here they are as senior citizens but they still have that music magic.

Waltz for Anthony Hopkins

I normally don't like Andre Rieu's style but I think this number was ... well, exquisite. If you like his kind of music you might also like this one of Supercalifragilistickexpialidocious which Don of Kelowna shared.

Baby Conductor

Shared this before but this seems to be a different version. If you listened to the Chad and Jeremy song in the previous video, it might have triggered days of your youth. It did to me.

Comments

You have "out done yourself" this week~~Love them ALL!!

Nice one about LA traffic. But you know it does not compare to Manila traffic. My poor son thought it would only take him 15 minutes to get to his cousin's house from the airport based on google maps. I warned him about the traffic but he didn't believe me. It took me a full two hours!!! He couldn't believe it. He was so depleted and exhausted that he just ate and slept when he got there and then he woke up early to head back to the airport because he didn't want to miss his flight to Copenhagen (he only had a lay-over in Manila and thought he had all this time to visit with his cousin).

We are coming back on Monday. We had sooo much fun here in the Philippines. On Friday, we took a tour of Cagayan de Oro and a nationwide travel show who happened to video the whole thing interviewed me in the end to ask me for my thoughts on Cagayan. The show airs next Friday. Then yesterday, we did a three-hour white water rafting thing and it was one of the best things I've ever done here in the Philippines. It was sooo beautiful (untouched nature all around us) and so much fun!

Blessings and love,

Pia

Hi Bro,

As I get older, I have less patience and seem to find more traffic.

Thanks for the TGIF! Have a good rest of the weekend.

Rick

I especially loved the little kid directing the choir! Having done it I could feel his Joy in his gyrations! Thanks for the comments on driving as well!

Tom

Hi! I enjoy your TGIF emails, but find that your narratives are often filled with negativity. I know you don't know me from Adam, and I would never tell you how to write your articles, but you put so much time and effort into your words and drawings, maybe you could take a look at your recent emails and consider a different spin? Often when I start reading I get put-off and close the email. Perhaps others are doing the same.
