ALTERED LYRICS

I try to always prepare a new worship song for my kids in Sunday School so I'm always on the look out for good material. Sadly, one of the things I've noticed with contemporary Christian music is they tend to sound nauseatingly formulaic. Many have this resounding electric guitar rhythm that cycles through just a few chords; the lead singer has either a high pitched or a gravelly voice and repeats the same lyrics like a mantra. It's such a contrast to the rich unique and (I believe) sophisticated recordings of the secular music that I grew up with before I became born again. (Sorry, I'm just being honest here.) So one of the things I've started to do is replace the lyrics of secular songs with Christian messages. Are you familiar with "Love is the answer" popularized by Englad Dan and John Ford Coley? I think it was supposed to be a Christian song but was censored along the way. (If you are interested, here's a link to MY chords and lyrics and it's about a street preacher watching a desensitized world pass him by.)

Last Sunday I sang my Christianized version of it and something magical happened. My kids and the grown ups were wide-eyed and actually listening. One of the adults thanked me after church for blessing him with that song. Of course I know the credit belongs not to me but to someone up above. I think he'll remember this twist the next time he hears the song on the radio.

Somehow in our wanting to belong, we conform to a mold created for someone else instead of discovering our potentials and who we really are. Who knows? Who we "really are" may be just what THEY "really need." Now wouldn't that be a blessing?

"Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets."
--- 2 Samuel 6:14

If you're cranky in the morning, it might be because you lack sleep. Just ask big brother. He always knows what's best for you.

The No. 1 Song When You Were Born

Top SOng in your birthday

This is pretty cool. When I punched in my birthday, the number one song was nothing that I was familiar with. In fact, it was kinda embarrassing that I was born in an era that seems so very long ago. The video actually led me from one old tune to another and I listened to songs my parents played when I was a kid. Ahh ... misty water colored memories of the way we were!

Love the altered lyrics! Great idea to come up with more ways to celebrate our Creator!

WHAT A GREAT IDEA TO CHANGE THE WORDS TO A FAVORITE MELODY!

I HEARD A HYMN YESTERDAY THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES FROM WHEN I WAS A CHILD AND I IMMEDIATELY THOUGHT OF A FRIEND OF MINE WHO IS A MINISTERS WIFE AND I WROTE HER STRAIGHT AWAY TO TELL HER HOW IMPORTANT AND HOW MUCH I VALUE HER. MUSIC IS SUCH AN IMPORTANT THING IN LIFE AND I ESPECIALLY LOVE CLASSICAL MUSIC. CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT IT MUST HAVE BEEN LIKE FOR FARMER TO GO INTO TOWN IN THE 1400’S, AND PASS A PLACE WHERE CLASSICAL MUSIC WAS BEING PLAYED? IT MUST HAVE BEEN HEAVENLY. I WILL NEVER FORGOT THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THE PRELUDE TO LOHENGRIN PLAYED.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND.

Check out the music of the band U2. I know several churches that have had services featuring that music.

Another place to steal ideas, I mean, get inspiration, is St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Glendale http://www.saintmarks.la/ .

I have attended Second Saturday Evening services there with the music of: Simon and Garfunkel, The Beatles, Les Miz, Jesus Christ Superstar (which they are doing again on March 28).

I’ll let you deal with the licensing.

As usual, enjoyed reading your personal notes. The videos looked interesting too. Unfortunately, till now, our audio is still off. I'll ask [my husband] why this is so. Sometimes he fiddles too much and what ain't broke, becomes broke. So we have to call the technician. Sigh! Ce'st la vie.

I LOVED the Kung Fu video. Thanks! and your words of wisdom about people you meet in the supermarket or wherever.

Yes, God arranges these encounters, and we often don't know what God is up to. I am learning patience, through my own health issues, and also supporting mother in law. Her memory is very poor and so she can't let go of things because she wants to remember the people or events that were important so long ago. Hm....a life lesson for me.
