True Friendship

TURN TURN TURN

I watched Groundhog Day Christmas morning. It's appeal is timeless. To the unfamiliar, it's about Phil, a man who relives the same day over and over. (Spoiler alert! Read no further if you plan to watch the movie.) The circumstances and the people change depending on the nuances of his input but his mind continues to function. It's only after he gets his self-centered juvenile urges out of his system and he develops a genuine compassion for others that he is freed from the shackles of the daily reruns.

I also watched a beautiful film called Saving Mr. Banks. The high-maintenance Mrs. Travers was such a contrast to the congenial Walt Disney. But both individuals shared a very difficult childhood which explains why only they could understand each other. At first you laugh at the stereotypes but later you marvel at the fiber of their human spirit.

Both films play with your emotions and they force you to reflect on your own life and your relationships. 2013 was a Yin Yang year for me --- when something went up, something else went down. I think of the birth of my grandson which was eclipsed by the death of a very close friend. So do we just ride the cycle of life? I hope not. Let's try to understand others more and learn from Phil --- accept the cycle but look for the little nuances which open doors to new possibilities. I so look forward to 2014. Do I hear an Amen?

A Testimony to True Friendship
Sent by Tom of Pasadena, CA

A man brings his best buddy home for dinner unannounced at 5:30 after work.

His wife begins screaming at him, while his friend just watches and listens to her.

"My hair and makeup are not done, the house is a mess, the dishes are not done, I'm still in my pajamas and I can't be bothered with cooking tonight! Why the heck did you bring him home?!"

"Because he's thinking of getting married."

It was a balmy 80+ degrees here in California Thursday. Hard to believe it's a winter wonder land in the East coast. Here's a funny video that explains my life here in California.

This should have been part of last week's email but I'm not waiting until next year to post this on. It's a clever yarn with a surprise ending.
